Splash Art Changes Feedback

Let me preface this post. I am by no means educated in art terminology. So for those who don't know what I'm talking about, Check this most recent post from surrender@20 The splash arts are being replaced so they have what Riot thinks is a higher quality splash art. However, based on the comments I have been seeing, they aren't being well received. I also personally don't like the art style for most of them. I think it feels like I'm looking at an anime/manga/some style of art that I can't classify, but don't feel fits League's current art style. I like the idea of improving the quality of art for some splash arts by replacing them with the Chinese version. I, for the most part, like the style in Chinese Boneclaw Shyvana, the Twitch splash arts, and Primal Udyr. It has removed some or most of the murky background and given the characters more definition and personality.

However, there are others that feel like a strong downgrade in quality or just a shift to the chinese version. Sivir is one who has had some notoriously bad splash arts for a while and I think didn't really they will improve with the change. PAX Sivir (Old vs New) is one that I am really unhappy with their change. The quality of the art is much lower. Her legs are 70% of her hight, it removed the action from the splash (Almost all modern splashes show action), removed her visor, has too large of a blade, and just feels less cool IMO. Some other examples of ones that I feel are downgrades are listed below. Keep in mind, not all of these are bad art, the majority honestly just feel like they should be in a Anime/Manga book or show.

Downgrades

*Nosferatu Vlad Old vs New

*Divine Soraka (Belongs in a comic) Old vs New

*Recon Teemo (Feels flat) Old vs New

*Musketeer Twisted Fate Old vs New

*Groovy Zilean (He now looks crazy, before he was groovy) Old vs New

*Gentlemen Cho'Gath (Removed his pipe :-( ) Old vs [New](

Upgrades

*Boneclaw Shyvana Old vs New.

*Vandal Vladimir Old vs New

*Buccaneer Swain Old vs New

*Gangster Twitch Old vs New

So, what are your thoughts?

You hit the nail on the head: these updated splashes do not fit the current art style of the game. Most of the updated splashes look like they belong in the seedy MMOs you see advertised on webpage sidebars and can't hold a candle to current art. At least the old NA splashes kinda fit the same art style, despite their age.

New Thunderlord Volibear splash looks terrible, IMO.

Should keep the current one and send that to the other servers. Volibear item 3070

I honestly feel like they are very cartoon-ish, and that doesn't really appeal to me.

There are some upgrades though, and overall I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Most of the new splashes are too cheap and incongruent.

I don't like some of the splash arts...Some are too Anime/Manga. I agree. I do like Anime/Manga art style but it feels a bit out of place for League of Legends. I know splash art and in game model are never exactly the same but cmon it makes me cringe a bit seeing the new Warrior Princess Sivir splash and then her in game model. Oh and the Karma skins splash arts too.

Overall I am extremely disappointed by these changes. There are very few exceptions for me. It looks like fan art rather than an actual champion splash. Half of them look somewhat realistic and the other half look like a joke. I have played this game since season 2, and I have THOUSANDS of games under my belt, but perhaps it is time for league to die off. Recent champion changes have been disappointing for me. It happens to every game that gets too popular. They make poor decisions to attempt to draw in more players, rather than enhance the quality of the game. The game is too generic now, rather than based on counterplay (I'm looking at the tank meta that hasn't gone anywhere and every champion having similar play styles). Sorry for the rant, but these splash art updates made me realize how terrible Riot is running League now. They sold out. It's probably GG.
