Straight talk. What to do about the canon?

Expanding the locales and personalities of each province in Valoran = good move. But the overall concepts of summoning and the Institute turning into the Pizzagate scandal = -3 style points. What kind of bandage/gauze would you put on the canon to make it workable?

I wouldn't do much considering every nation Riot's touching on has been given a proper narrative and story of its own, with the champions being central points of that story. It's working thus far.

riot already said that "summoners", and the institute of war is no longer canon, and its not part of the new runeterra they they started building a while ago.

I'm pretty sure by this point Summoners are to League what Planeswalkers were to M:tG; a part of universe only as a means of connecting the player to it, but not necessarily an integral part of the story as told by the settings/characters/cards etc.

Basically, you are a Summoner- a time/space bending demigod- plucking interesting individuals from the world of Runeterra and placing them in Summoner's Rift for a 5v5 MOBA deathmatch for no reason other than your own amusement and no permanent impact on the world of Runeterra itself.
