Some thoughts on how Talon got his name and his connection birds, owls to be exact

Looking at the roster of our league, out of 144 champions, only five of the human-come champions doesn't use their name or surname. These 5 being

TwistedFate Talon DrMundo Jhin Mordekaiser

  • Jhin TwistedFate They do have real names but use their stage names. Jhin's is unrevealed and probably never will, while TF's is Tobias Foxtrot.
  • Mordekaiser He's getting a rework so we'll see why he was named Murder Emperor and called as such.
  • DrMundo Talon Their names were given by other, unrelated people. ##But there is a clear diversion between them. Mundo doesn't have a meaning in English, while Talon does.

When you have a name that has a direct meaning it means you are connected to it one way or another. This would be called fate and a nice thing to add if the character was born with it. But if it's given by others... It means that character has earned it. Now let's ask and answer these two questions:

#What did he do to get this name and who gave it exactly?

What did he do exactly to be named Talon, a bird's hunting tool? Their feet and weapon? It is clear from his bio that he acted like an animal.

He carved out a dangerous reputation on the brutal streets of Noxus, where he was forced to fight, kill, and steal to survive.

There are three possible candidites that could've named Talon, they are:

  1. Kavyn. If he is still canon in someway, he was the only thing he had that was close to a friend. The only human he kept close. They lived together for quite a while so it is possible that Kavyn called him Talon because of how he behaved or moved, acted.

  2. The Assassin Guilds. They were after Talon because of his talents, but since he didn't have a name it's quite possible they just gave this codename.

  3. General Du Couteau. Maybe he did not only give Du Couteau surname to him, but his name as well? Again, it can be because of how Talon acted and performed.

Now to the part where Talon performs like the birds and gains his title. And I think he has some very strong resemblances with one bird type, owls.

#What did he do for people to name him after birds?

  • Talon usually wandered above. The buildings, walls, trees etc. He was above the humans in streets.

  • I think aerial assassination can be another reason. The guilds were sending people for him, it is possible for Talon to start by an aerial attack to his unsuspecting assassins. Like a bird, he dives from the sky and kills his prey with his talons.

  • In a narrative sense it is poetic to give him a bird relation because while their total freedom is what makes birds birds, he refuses it to search General Du Couteau. Also stabby stabby, knify, sharpy... Talon was given because of these, but we can do so much more.

The connections I can think of to usual birds is this much. But I've watch some documentaries on Owls, and I have seen many similarities.

#What does Talon have in common with Owls?

Here are the Owls' skills and how I compare them to Talon:

##1. Silent Flight, they fly silently then most of the other birds because their wings are much bigger compared to their bodies. They usually just glide in the air with little wing movements. We can compare this to how Talon moves and acts quietly as it says in his bio. Going in, completing his mission and getting out without raising a single alarm. Also if his knife cape can be made to a good use, gliding in air seems like a good thing to do. ##2. No emotions, only instincts. Birds really don't have emotions, they are not attached to anything. General Du Couteau wanted Katarina to be a killing machine without emotion but he failed. Since from what it seems Talon is his replacement, I expect him to be like this. At start at least, after General trains Talon. ##3. They dive facing down, put their talons facing towards their prey at the last moment. A perfect example for an aerial assassination. ##4. Owls hunt in the night using their night vision and good hearing abilities. This is what seperates them mostly from the other birds of prey. It is much better for an assassin to act at night, Talon wears blueish clothes to camuflage in the night sky. He hunts in the night. ##5. They can't hunt at rainy days because rain makes it impossible to track sounds. Talon definitely hated rain because he didn't have a shelter, who knows how many children died of sickness because of rain?

Edit: Here is my favorite documentary about owls out of the ones I watched, definitely reccommended! (Don't mind the weird title)

#Ooooor you can just claim Talon doesn't mean bird's claw in Noxian language and this post is nothing, like Talon's lore [sg-lulu]

Friendly reminder that English, Spanish, German, etc are not actual languages that people in Runeterra speak. Just because Talon means talon in english or Leona means Female Lion in spanish, it doesnt mean that those champs must have a relation with those things.

The only exceptions are Bard, Wolf and Lamb since their names are translated in every language as far as i know.

ANGRY TwistedFate MAIN ALERT

His name is Tobias Felix. Tobias Felix. Confirmed by his High Noon lore. Literally "Lucky Tobias".

I feel like the connection to owls in particular is a little forced/ grasping at straws. The silent flight is probably the strongest part of it, and I can see it riding off that entirely, but the rain argument isn’t very convincing for me. In general though, he definitely shares some traits with birds of prey. I look forward to he day he gets some lore updates (hopefully before 2020).

Are you sure there are only 5? Miss Fortune is another person that doesn't go by her real name. She goes by her elected title instead of Sarah.

Mundo means world in Latin. I think making an entire argument on "their name means something in english" is a little shortsighted. Most of them are just for fun. Like riven literally meaning broken, lux meaning light in latin, udyr beast in german(?), etc. There are others but they're just there for a bit of on the nose humor.

I thought Talon was just his real name? Does it say in his lore that it isn't?

Same with Mordekaiser, I haven't heard anything about that not being his real name.

And as far as Mundo goes, if he has no other name to go by, wouldn't his real name just be Mundo?

I think you're overthinking it. Some names may have meaning to us (like Lux is Latin for light) that may clue us in to their themes or personality, but in-universe they are just their names. Lux was named Lux by Riot because of her light-hearted personality and her light powers. Lux was named by her parents because its a good Demacian name, or maybe she's named after a relative, or something else mundane. I think its possible that applies to Talon as well. Riot named him Talon because it sounds cool and alludes to his owl-like/raptor-like assassination capabilities, but in-universe we don't know who named him, nor do we even know they named him for the same reasons. Maybe that's a common name in Noxus, like how Lily is a flower but also a girl's name.

In batman there is an owl gang that robin was a part of before he became part of the batman and it had owls and talons and stuff. Also maybe relates to bird anarcho capitalism

Wasn't Talon at some point being heavily inclined to be Quinn's brother in the earlier incarnations of the lore? That could account for the connection to birds of prey, since Quinn's BFFF is a falcon.

Also, I'm pretty sure Dr. Mundo's real name IS Mundo in some form or fashion. The "Dr." part was the only fabricated part of his name.

I do not think her name is her real name either. Riven

I never knew that and I actually learned something new with your thread! Talon is a guy Id love to see lore on, hopefully with the Mordekaiser rework...

I want to focus on this, even if it's not really relevant to the subject matter of the thread:

  1. No emotions, only instincts. Birds really don't have emotions, they are not attached to anything.

It is false. While intelligence level vary between birds greatly and so we can not generalise "birds is this or that, birds do this and that...", but it is true that many birds possess emotions and can form genuine relationships with each other and to other species such as humans. They don't necessarily have the same concept as humans do on different subjects, such as emotions, but for many birds they do understand it and express it in their own way. Birds do show behaviours of affection/love, care, fear, anger (hell, a lot of birds look like they're perpetually pissed off), and grief.

A common argument to dismiss the expression of emotions, in particular in animals that we perceive as "simpler and dumber" such as birds (which is obviously not always true, because birds like say the ravens are in fact so smart they exhibit intellectual traits that was preciously thought to have only been limited to humans and great apes), we attribute them to mechanical survival instincts than heartfelt emotions experienced by the individual in a conscious way. However, such reasoning is a double-edged sword. Because human emotional behaviour similarly stemmed from and are there to serve a survival purpose first and foremost, influencing us in our decision of choosing a partner, avoiding danger, staying healthy etc.

In either case for both birds and humans, the line between emotion and instinct is a thin, blurry one that exists in a limbo of "who knows". Without somehow adopting a perspective of and living as a bird yourself to know how much agency a bird truly has over their instincts, it is impossible to truly know, at least for now, where is the line drawn between id (psychology; referring to the instinctual drives) and everything else in the mind of a bird. It's even less convincing that since humans are by no means anywhere free from the grasp of our instinctual drives and we're intimately influenced by it all the time often without our knowing, and thus we don't really have much rights to dismiss other animals' emotions as some completely mechanical reflex of sort that they can't consciously be aware of and feel.

As a talon main i wished he got more lore or was in some videos to see some personality. His voice is terrible and no1 even acknowledges him. Like i thought swain would say something to him but he doesn't neither does kat n she's his sister. I just want more interactions with other champs as him.
