Can we get a map of Runeterra?

EvilUnicornLord··1 votes·5,035 views

I know there is one existing, but it's outdated considering the lack of current areas, the fact that Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles are too far apart, and the appearance of the Institute of War on the map.

So can we please get an up-to-date map of Runeterra?

I have a feeling we've already gotten one and I'm just asking a stupid request.

Here you go.

I can't remember which Rioter said it, but we are not likely to ever get a global map of all of Runeterra. Doing so would mean that the writers can never introduce new locations.

Doesn't seems to he working on mobile. Thanks anyway, I'll just have to check it out on a computer when I get the chance.

That would probably have been me, resident cartrographic-nutcase.

It's not that we'll never get a world map, it's just that it might be a good long while until we build up to that - and even when we do, it may well be a biased or inaccurate map, because they don't have satellite photography in Runeterra quite yet, and cartographers almost always have an agenda.

There will be more maps though. More pieces of the puzzle.

Hey Bio how come I didn't see your name during the Demacia AMA, were you working on something else?

Yep! I don't often get to work with the World Building peeps, but it's always a pleasure to do so. Alas, I wasn't involved in the Demacia stuff this time round.

Yeah Demacia is certianly much bigger on their maps than on other people's maps. ;)

Also a question; what faction would you bet is the best/most prolific cartographers? Pilties might have done some fancy maps, but Piltover is still a young, isolated and tiny place, so... Perhaps the older, larger & expansionist Noxus would have done a fair bit of cartography?

It's hard to say. I believe that wherever there are sentient beings, there are maps of some kind. Depends on what kind of maps you mean.

  • I imagine that every group of Freljordians have their own 'maps' of a kind, whether its as complicated as to show the extents of seasonal ice blockages, or the migration of important animals.
  • Shurimans likely have similar (whether externalized or internalized) for the locations of oases and dangerous Xer'Sai territories.
  • Bilgewater will be full of nautical maps and places with good hunting depending on the seasons.
  • Noxus (and Demacia) probably has as many maps as they have military events - i.e. lots and lots of them and that's not including things like ownership disputes between farmers and land owners, taxation and census maps, etc. We know Noxus 'maps' places with their War Masons too.
  • Piltover, as you say, may well have decided to map everything they come across - I know one explorer in particular who has quite the relationship with maps, from Piltover. ;) They may try to collate maps from other groups in one of the Universities as well, though perhaps as a curiosity and not in a practical manner.
  • Zaun might be less into classical maps, but the lower levels of Zaun are likely labyrinthine in construction, and ways and paths frequently open up or are closed off with new construction or collapses - maybe it's all memorized, but maybe there are diagrams that serve as 'maps' to those in the know.
  • Ionia may well have maps (or pieces of art that serve as maps) that have been cultivated and worked on for hundreds of years, and aren't expected to be complete for hundreds more - but the typical Ionian may well have layouts of seasonal planting, or diagrams of how to get to meetings and gatherings that only happen once a decade or more.
  • Heck, even the Void may have 'maps' in the form of unfathomable data gathered by Vel'Koz or instinctual (data collated from entities like Rek'Sai. And that's not even taking into account what a map of the Void would be like. The fringes of my sanity burn just thinking about it.
  • Targon no doubt has maps - but whether they are of of places as 'small scale' as Runeterra, I'm not sure.
  • As for Bandle City, the celestials, the underwater groups, folks from the jungles, independents, etc. I suspect it would vary on a case by case basis. I bet Bard, for example, knows how to go everywhere with his magical journeys, but if that's in map form, I doubt anyone could decipher it.

Tl;dr - If you mean maps as we classically understand them, yeah probably Noxus. But I believe every group of intelligent beings map their environment in some form.

What would the Shadow Isles use as maps? Like torn up remnants of surviving outdated maps before the corruption

I knew I'd forget somewhere without going and checking >_<

For Shadow Isles, I imagine for your typical entity they are more driven by instinct and the wills of the more powerful minds of the Black Mist. For the ones with more independent thought, I can't imagine them taking quill to paper and drawing up much in the way of new maps. Maybe they take maps from the places they raid, but I imagine that the ones who had maps with them when they were first turned still have the equipment they possessed at the time, and they have the memories of their old routes and travels.

They aren't really a region or city state but would you say the hunters from the Kumungu like Rengar or Nidalee have tracking routes of their jungles
