Hi there,

I’m Pabro, a Product Manager, on the LoL Personalization Content Team (aka Skins team) and I’m here to give you all an update on Championship Riven as she will be hitting PBE very soon.

Worlds is a special time of year, and with the introduction of Championship Zed (surprise!) who rounds out a full Championship team comp, we wanted to look back to Season 2 where the championship line began. We felt this was a great opportunity to bring back the original Championship skin: Championship Riven for a new generation of players. And we damn well wanted to make sure she felt awesome for original owners. So we spent some time giving her texture some love and bringing it up to our current art standards.

We didn’t want to stop there though, and decided we were going to do something extra special for those who originally obtained her four years ago during the Season 2 World Championship.

If you are an original owner of Championship Riven, we are adding in some extra in-game recognition for you. Firstly, we will be making a custom vintage loading screen banner that is different than previous versions so people will know you’re an OG.

Secondly, we’re creating a “vintage” version of her in-game model that features an exclusive crown and a glowing particle on her sword when her ultimate, “Blade of the Exile” is activated. Original owners will get the “vintage” version of her updated model and the new version as well.

Any new owner of the skin will be able to obtain Championship Riven with an updated texture but none of the aforementioned extra goodies. The goal here was to ensure that vintage Championship Riven commemorated the start of the Championship skin line and people who obtained her at that time will get to celebrate that forever.

Championship Riven has been highly coveted by a lot of you for a looooong time. I mean, there was even a petition about it. Over the years, we’ve heard a lot of feedback, excitement and discussion around this skin so we felt it was important to do something different than what we’ve tried in the past.

As someone who is an original owner of the skin, and someone who likes the idea of releasing older (Limited Edition) skin again, i will say this is a great idea and something that i feel is a great way to give those of us who originally bought it something extra. Thanks for this, great job!

There will not be RP compensation this time around. We know this is a different approach, but we wanted to offer a way for existing owners to be recognized in-game and honor the moment in our history that her initial launch represents. Thus, the added crown, particle and custom loading screen border that is only available for those who originally owned the skin.

Given the reduction in exclusivity, we will be providing the following compensation to the original owners of these skins: RP equal to the price they paid for the skin Vintage treatment in the loading screen whenever they use the skin

Original Limited Edition skin owners will receive this exclusive summoner icon Going forward these 34 skins will be considered Legacy skins, and may on rare occasion also come back for future events without additional >compensation

Please note these changes don’t have any effect on:

Limited Edition skins that were once in the store but are not part of these events (Rusty Blitzcrank, Urf Warwick, Championship Riven, Riot Singed). If these skins are ever brought back, they will be treated similarly.

Earned Limited Edition skins that were rewarded for events or achievements and never appeared in the store (PAX Twisted Fate, King Rammus, Victorious Jarvan, UFO Corki, etc.). We have no plans to make these skins available.

Other Legacy skins (Riot K9 Nasus, Zombie Brand, Nottingham Ezreal, etc.), which may still come back into the store from time to time without compensation

My point being the skin was advertised as limited. It was purchased as limited. They set a precedent. Now they're knowingly breaking it. Don't get me wrong, shiny particles and fancy borders are all fine and good. But the key terms they used were that the Limited Skins would recieve similar treatment.

We know this is a different approach

This is really hurting my faith in the company. And when the time comes, I hope I can convince Riot to hold true to their word...

Riot was a much smaller company all those years ago that never expected to get as big as it is today. The people working at Riot change over the years, as do their stances and policies. There are also millions of players of the game, a majority of whom aren't in the Old Boys Club and don't want to be penalized because of that.

Let me be forthright here. I am NOT mad she's no longer limited. Riot can now make more money off of the skin. Good for them.

Everyone and their mum knew it was going to happen.

I am mad Riot's breaking it's word and giving (thusfar) a downright tacky addition to the model as "compensation". Whether or not you agree, I don't give a furious flying Teemo if people are or are not "Penalized" for not being around to buy the skin.

Again. I don't care if she's not limited anymore. I care that the company I hold in a place of respect is breaking their word. The smaller company is the one that earned my respect, and that respect has been battered on many occasions. None the less, I will still ask them to hold true to their word. And that word is a small amount of in game currency that literally costs them nothing while giving them the face of a company that actually cares about the product they push and the community that dedicates their time and MOST IMPORTANTLY their money to it.

Penalized? hey .. i want to get human ryze.. excuse me young ryze, but i cant.. i dont feel bad with them bringing back other skins, but certain skins to mark a moment in time are different. this was a promise. then they slowly started bleeding her into small chance of obtaining through the worlds guess for who will win. dont think anyone won at all. just hard to really trust when this is the business practices of a company.

They just did it the last time as a first time thing... this time around they are trying something different because people complained about how it was handled. You can't expect them to do it the same way every time if people just whine.

People complain every time a new champion is released. Are you suggesting they stop releasing champions?

People complain every time a character is buffed or nerfed. Are you suggesting they stop trying to balance the game?

People are stupid at times, but they do occasionally raise a point through the sea of mundane simpering. And my own point is that Riot should hold true to their word, a small group of people 975 RP while doubtlessly making a large sum among the fans who have been waiting patiently for their Riven skin.

No border?? Im not gonna buy it, sry for me thats not rare skin anymore. You can make something like for project skins... Icon + cores, idk... I dont like this idea so im not gonna spend my money on this skin, its 1 of my favorite skins but without border im not gonna buy it!

The Border is to compensate for those who originally owned it, because back when they bought it, they were told Championship Riven would never return. Bringing it back now and not giving them something to say "Hey I had this skin when it was first available" is a rather poor thing to do.

I very much like the added crown and special border idea. But the glowing particle on her blade when ulted should be present in all versions of the skin in my opinion.

Im a riven main and i love that they are bringing championship riven back and i dont think the crown looks that good imo so im happy!! But I LOVE RITO NOW BECAUSE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SKIN FOR SOOOOOO LONG and i have everysingle riven skin except that one so now i will have all!!!!!!!!

Just so you know, only those who Owned CS Riven in the past will have the crown, getting her once she is buyable again means you will not have a crown

Seeing this just makes me said that riot is that money hungry. This is the reason why im quitting league. Re-realeasing this skin takes away the prestigious value and having a crown that seemingly did not take much effort and time to make is not worth it at all. Thanks riot for ruining my day even though I know this post will probably make 90% of other players who don't have the skin happy.

It's not even the fact they're re-releasing it that upsets me personally.

Every single player knew it was coming after the holiday limited skins were re-released.

What upsets ME is that Riot isn't giving you the RP you invested into this advertised Limited Skin, despite the precedent they set with the Holiday skins.

I'm sorry this may sound really dumb but can the Zed skin and Riven skin be purchased even if you are unranked as in you don't currently have a rank in ranked mode. and how much time do we get to purchase the skin?

Rank will never block you from buying a skin Championship skins have usually been 975 RP

The only kind of skin linked to Rank is the Victorious skin which is given to all players who have achieved Gold or Higher by the end of the season (and no there is no info on who the Victorious skin is for)

Wait so if championship riven is back. Does that mean shes in hextech crafting and we can snag her before she gets released again. Meaning we have a chance to get the border? Or is she not in hextech?

No. The border and crown are only for those that owned her before. She isn't part of hextech crafting currently.

The Border and Crown are ONLY for the previous Owners from Season 2 She will be in the Hextech Pool tho once she gets re added tho.
