Basically this^^, but with heavy dark bloody tonality around it.

Varus atm is not singularly darkin - In riot's explanation video they state: "Individually, either one of them would probably have been overwhelmed by the darkin presence, but together they were stronger" and "that love between the two of them is what allows them to hold onto themselves in the face of its overwhelming power" and hell later it's asked "Will val and kai be able to quell the hatred within them?"

This already indicates that Varus is now in fact a symbiotic being of 2 + 1 (both val and kai + darkin) and that val and kai (together) are currently in control (if you take the phrasing literally anyways).

in the bio too "How long Val and Kai can keep Varus fully at bay is anyone’s guess"

But this is later debunked by varus (the darkin being the one in control of the body "The voice echoed in his skull, impossible to ignore. Which one was it? Kai or Valmar? He suspected Val, but mortal minds were so simple and muddy that it was hard to tell one from another.")

There is way too much back and forth in terms of wordplay to say that the Varus we play / see is in complete control (but is now the main body).

So yes I agree that simply Varus is the darkin.

tl;dr I agree with CatSith just giving more detail on why there is confusion.
