Poppy's Long Lore has Arrived!

Poppy

On EU West! Take a gander folks! I'll transcribe in a minute.

Also, GOD DAMN POPPY'S OLD. JEEZ. LIKE, SERIOUSLY.

Also point two: I called it on Orlon! HAH.

“I’m no hero. Just a yordle with a hammer.”

Runeterra has no shortage of valiant champions, but few are as tenacious as Poppy. Bearing a hammer twice the length of her body, this determined yordle has spent untold years searching for the “Hero of Demacia,” a fabled warrior said to be the rightful wielder of her weapon.

As legend describes it, this hero is the only person who can unlock the full power of the hammer and lead Demacia to true greatness. Though Poppy has searched the furthest corners of the kingdom for this legendary fighter, her quest has proven fruitless. Each time she has attempted to pass the hammer on to a potential hero, the results have been disastrous, often ending in the warrior’s death. Most people would have abandoned the task long ago, but most people do not possess the pluck and resolve of this indomitable heroine.

Poppy was once a very different yordle. For as long as she could remember, she had been in search of a purpose. Feeling alienated by the chaotic whimsy of other yordles, she preferred to soak up stability and structure where she could find it. This drive brought her to the human settlements of western Valoran, where she gazed in wonder at the caravans striping the countryside in an endless file. Many of the people there looked tattered and weary, but they stumbled on in pursuit of some ephemeral better life that might lie just beyond the horizon.

One day, however, a different sort of caravan passed through. Unlike the other travelers, these people seemed to move with purpose. They all awoke at the exact same time each morning, roused by the sound of a watchman’s horn. They took their meals together every day at the same hour, always finishing within a few minutes. They set up their camps and took them down with remarkable efficiency.

While yordles used their innate magic to fashion extraordinary things, these humans achieved equally astounding feats through coordination and discipline. They acted in concert like the cogs of a gear, becoming something much larger and stronger than any single person could ever be. To Poppy, that was more marvelous than all the magic in the world.

As Poppy watched the camp from the safety of her hiding place, her eyes caught the gleam of armor emerging from a tent. It was the group’s commanding officer, wearing a brigandine of gleaming steel plates, each piece overlapping, each an integral part of the whole. The man’s name was Orlon, and his presence seemed to stir the souls of everyone there. If someone became discouraged, he was there to remind them of why they pressed on. If someone collapsed from exhaustion, he inspired them to get up. It reminded Poppy of certain yordle charms, though again, without magic.

Poppy crept in for a closer look. She found herself following this shining commander, as if drawn to him by fate itself. She observed Orlon as he led his soldiers in training exercises. He was not a large fellow, yet he swung his massive battle hammer with surprising alacrity. At night, Poppy listened intently to his hushed discussions with the elders of the camp. She heard them making plans to pull up stakes and head west to build a permanent settlement.

Poppy’s mind was overwhelmed with questions. Where was Orlon going? Where did he come from? How did he assemble this meticulous band of travelers, and was there a place for a yordle in it? At that moment, she made the most important decision in her life: For the first time ever, she would reveal herself to a human, as this was the first time she’d ever felt a connection with one.

The introduction was a jarring one, with Orlon having just as many questions for Poppy as she had for him, but the two soon became inseparable. He became a mentor to her, and she a devotee to his cause. In the training grounds, Poppy was an invaluable sparring partner–the only member of Orlon’s battalion who was unafraid to strike him. She was never obsequious, questioning his decisions with an almost childlike innocence, as though she didn’t know she was supposed to meekly follow orders. She accompanied him to the site of the new settlement–an ambitious new nation called Demacia, where all were welcome, regardless of station or background, so long as they contributed to the good of the whole.

Orlon became a beloved figure throughout the kingdom. Though few had actually seen him wield his hammer, he always bore it on his back, and the weapon quickly became a revered icon for the fledgling nation. People whispered that it had the power to level mountains and tear the earth itself asunder.

Orlon passed the hammer to Poppy on his deathbed, and with it, his hope of an enduring kingdom. It was only then that Orlon told her the story of his weapon’s creation, and how it was never truly intended for his hands. He explained to Poppy that the hammer was meant to go to the Hero of Demacia–the only one who could keep Demacia whole. As her friend drew his last breath, Poppy swore to him that she would find this hero and place the weapon in his hands.

But what Poppy possesses in resolve, she lacks in ego, as it never even occurred to her that she might be the hero Orlon described.

The Slayer

Poppy had nothing against the briar wolf, aside from the fact that it was about to maul her. Its muzzle was stained crimson from a previous kill, and the yordle wouldn’t chance being its next. She was hot on the trail of a renowned monster slayer, and she didn’t intend to die before she found the man and judged his worth.

“You should step back. You won’t survive this,” Poppy told the wolf, holding her hammer aloft as a deterrent.

But the briar wolf was not discouraged. It padded toward her, propelled by some strange desperation that Poppy couldn’t identify. Then she saw the telltale foam at the corners of its mouth. This animal was not driven by hunger or territorial instincts. It was in pain, and it wanted release. The wolf leapt at her, as if it had made up its mind that its next act would be to kill or be killed.

Poppy swung the hammer, using every ounce of her strength to move the weapon’s considerable weight. The blow she delivered collapsed the animal’s skull in an instant, ending its torment. Poppy took no pleasure in the kill, but she supposed it was the best possible outcome, for her and the wolf.

The yordle looked around at the empty meadow, but sensed no trace of the monster slayer she’d come to find. She had roamed the countryside, following rumors of his activities, hoping this mysterious hunter might be the fabled hero she had sought for so many years. But thus far, all she’d found were wolves and wyverns and highwaymen, most of whom she’d been forced to kill in self-defense.

She had spent weeks traveling from hamlet to hamlet in the far-flung corners of Demacia. She walked as fast as her tiny gait would allow, but the monster slayer always seemed to be one step ahead of her, leaving naught but tales of heroic exploits in his wake. For a yordle, time is a curious thing whose passing is seldom felt, but even for Poppy, the search was beginning to grow long.

One day, just when she was beginning to doubt herself and her mission, she spied a notice nailed to a roadside post:

“All are invited to attend the Festival of the Slayer!”

It was a celebration to honor the very monster hunter Poppy had been seeking. If there was any hope of locating this elusive hero, she would certainly find it there. He might even make an appearance, and then she could size him up in person to determine if he was worthy to carry the hammer Orlon had bequeathed her. The prospect put a spring in her step, and she marched with renewed purpose toward the celebration.

Poppy was anxious when she arrived at the village, its banners and streamers gaudily proclaiming the day’s festivities. Ideally, she would have arrived early at such a public event and claimed a spot in the rear of the crowd, so as not to draw attention. But the main market was already packed with spectators, and Poppy found it hard to maneuver through the press of bodies. She squeezed through the legs of the townsfolk, most of whom were too inebriated to notice her.

“I’d buy ’im a pint if ’e were here,” slurred one voice above her. “Saved my goats by killing that monster.”

Poppy’s heart raced, as it always did when she heard tales of the hunter.

What if he turns out to be the one? she thought.

But deep inside, Poppy asked a different question. What would she do once she was rid of the weapon? Would she find an entirely new purpose? A yordle without one was a pathetic sight indeed. She stopped her mind from wandering and brought it back to the task at hand.

The tiny warrior finally managed to weave her way to the back of the market. She found a tall lamppost both easy to climb and behind the eyes of the crowd. She then shimmied up the post, just high enough to see over the throng.

Poppy was just in time. On the far side of the market, a speaker stood with several Demacian officials on a dais, and behind him, something tall was draped in a ceremonial veil.

Even with her keen yordle senses, Poppy could barely hear the man’s words. He was talking about the monster hunter, and how he had saved numerous farms and villages from wyverns, rabid wolves, and bandits. He said that although this revered warrior had chosen to remain anonymous, it shouldn’t stop them from celebrating his deeds. The slayer had been spotted several weeks ago near the town of Uwendale, leaving the first eyewitness accounts of his appearance. With that, the speaker pulled off the veil to reveal a stone statue.

Poppy grew faint with excitement as she saw the hunter’s likeness for the first time. He was the paragon of a Demacian warrior—seven feet tall, armored in heavy plate mail, and rippling with sharply defined muscles. Beneath him lay the corpse of a wolf he had presumably slain.

Just as the image had begun to settle in Poppy’s mind, she heard the sound of a child’s voice a few yards away.

“Look, Da. It’s the slayer! The one from the statue!” declared the wide-eyed girl.

Poppy saw the girl was pointing in her direction. She whirled around to see if the slayer was standing behind her. But no one was there.

“No, lass,” said the girl’s father. “That one’s no monster slayer. Too small by half.”

The girl and her father quickly lost interest and strolled through the village to partake in the various amusements.

As the crowd in front of the statue dispersed, Poppy moved in for a closer inspection. Now she could see the fine details of the hunter’s marble depiction. His hair was long, fair, and bound in two separate side knots. His hands were gnarled from a hundred battles, and in them, he held a massive battle hammer not unlike the one Orlon had given her. If there was a truer hero in the kingdom, Poppy had never seen him.

“He has to be the one,” Poppy said. “Hope I’m not too late.”

She turned and left the festival as fast as her legs could carry her, taking the swiftest route to Uwendale.

Wait... hold on.

What if Yordles are not long-lived as implied by Poppy's lore? What if it is the Hammer, having found the right hero, keeping Poppy alive as she fulfills her duty, unknowingly, as Demacia's protector? Think about it, Orlon never wielded the hammer, just carried it on his back, while Poppy can make full use of it's power.

Ralanr2 votes

Hmm...interesting theory actually.

I only suggest this because Poppy's status as being effectively immortal conflicts with previous information given concerning Yordles.

We know they are born and they age, hence Gnar is explicitly two years old and Heimerdinger appears ancient. Lulu's disappearance in the Glade for centuries is an integral part of her lore. Gnar being frozen in ice would be pointless if Yordles were immortal. Heimerdinger and Ziggs interact freely with human society, yet no mention was ever made of a particularly extensive lifespan.

Well, someone pointed this in a thread about yorlde ages before the release of Poppy:

_The Lost Girl Returns

The young, purple, yordle girl, Lulu, that was reportedly missing centuries ago, miraculously reappeared, and although she did grow, she was much younger and healthier than anticipated. During her absence, she acquired some new magical talent and a new friend, Pix, Faerie Companion.png Pix, possibly the large firefly that the yordles had told about. Lulu Lulu sought to reconnect to the residents of Bandle City, but her attempt had unfortunate results. She led all the children off to play hide and seek, temporarily changing them into flowers and animals to spice up the game, but their parents didn’t appreciate her efforts. The yordles insisted that she leave their lands immediately and she willingly did so. She currently travels around Valoran, hoping to find her place in it._

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Bandle_City

keywords: Younger than Anticipated. Which means that yordles can live centuries.

You're right, how would anyone know who she was if all of the Yordles who knew her died in the mean time? Looks like they live that long. I'm thinking now, if Runeterra has ice ages as our world does, did Gnar live during one? How long are those ice age cycles? Also, how fast does evolution work on Yordles? We can't have a.. let's say, a Yordle that lived ten thousand years ago and have Yordles live for a couple of thousand years. That would mean that drastic evolutionary changes happen during only a few Yordle generations.

SuperLuigiLXIV2 votes

Given that Gnar defended his village from Lissandra at some point, it's not a stretch to think that his descendants are not the Yordles of Bandle City, but of another group of Yordles farther to the north, which would explain the much thicker fur on his body than on Rumble et al.

333lom2 votes

Aha so you're suggesting that Gnar doesn't belong to the group ancestral Yordles of the ones in Bandle city, but to a branch that's closer in time to them. It could be, why not.

SuperLuigiLXIV1 votes

The easiest way to explain Gnar's thicker fur when compared to Rumble et al is divergent evolution based on a colder climate.

The next explanation I'd go for is that Gnar simply looks more animalistic than your average Yordle because of his Rage Gene. It probably wouldn't be hard to argue that any Yordle who inherits the Rage Gene would look more like Gnar than normal.

Heh. Yordles have werewolves. XD

Decrit1 votes

Well, i suppose Orlon used that hammer in battle, no? Also, is not having it on the shoulder something like wielding it?

It is not said explicitly but i guess is hinted because it would have not sense otherwise, and would be a rather cheap thing to hide in order to prepare for a surprise later.

Also, incoming Poppy lore in bilgewater?

Malicious Metal4 votes

Wait a minute?! So poppy was best buds with the "founder" of Demacia if I'm not mistaken.

Just how old do yordles get?

Sharjo5 votes

I believe that's the case. How Orlon's family tree works is now my biggest question.

And yeah, yordles apparently live for centuries at least. This lore here actually answers a lot of questions Illaoi brought to the table about yordles, plus puts Rengar's "good omen" line in to perspective in Gnar's lore.

Ralanr2 votes

Wait what about Rengar and Gnar?

Sharjo4 votes

Rengar saw Gnar in the jungle and said "A hunter! A yordle no less! This is a good omen." so he basically had it in his mind that yordles are good fortune in some way, hinting that worldwide people view yordles as spirits of good will.

Yordles being centuries old...

Just think though. If Poppy is that old while still looking youthful, then how much older than her are Heimer and Corki?

Valaran Nara4 votes

I like how the Monster Slayer is her in this one, and the only reason it looks anything different is probably due to a patriarchal mindset and a need to make the individual bigger than life.

Nechronia8 votes

I like that it's a statue of a really muscular man with flowing pigtails.

Ralanr8 votes

Pigtails are very manly.

Solidair32 votes

Not pigtails. Side knots! Totally different! And DEFINITELY not Poppy!

Her naivete is so cute

Marbelara4 votes

I love how the father compared Poppy to the statue, and then disregarded her because she was so much smaller than it was - unlike the daughter, who was small herself. To her, both Poppy and the statue were very formidable indeed!

Ralanr4 votes

Holy shit...YORDLES ARE FEY CREATURES!

It all makes sense! Poppy knew the founder of Demacia, yet she's still alive today to know about Garen and JarvanIV. She doesn't seemed to have really aged extremely, so either Yordles age very slowly, or they don't change overtime as long as they have their purpose!

Either that or Yordles are just immortal. But considering Illaoi's response to them, I'm inclined to believe that they are indeed some sort of Fey race on Runeterra. Poppy's extended period of travel only enhances my suspicions! That and her concept of time!

Sharjo5 votes

Might give some context as to why Tahm's gunnin' for yordles; they're diametrically opposed beings.

Ralanr2 votes

Exactly!

Malicious Metal6 votes

Also makes her friendship with galio even more relatable. The Sentinel's Sorrow watching over Demacia while the Keeper of the hammer seeks the hero.

They've known each other for a looong time and have witnessed Demacia's rise.

Ralanr4 votes

A kinship as old (or almost) as an empire...damn.

Sharjo3 votes

It helps in that these two will inevitably watch Demacia grow and develop, but will always be friends throughout, considering they'll potentially outlive Demacia all together.

Sharjo3 votes

I want the story of how they met now. I reckon it'd be a fantastic read!

Shíny4 votes

So what's up with this "innate yordle magic"? Kinda takes away from the underdog, hard-working feel a few of them have going for them with how they've portrayed it so far.

rand0mredneck3 votes

That whole "Seldom feel time passing" bit makes me think Yordles live a long ass time.

Sharjo5 votes

Well considering Poppy and Orlon met before the founding of Demacia I'd say it's a fair guess that they're long lived. They're also apparently innately magical. I guess that explains the magic-technology; they took the creations of men, or perhaps made it themselves, and imbued it with their own magic to give it amazing powers unlike anything the world had seen before.

Marbelara1 votes

I was about to ask about 'military, mechanized' yordles but your explanation is brilliant. Thank you so much!

Still doesn't explain Kennen, but he is another yordle that needs some Riot love.

(Tbh, since he's only became a member of the kinkou recently, would that make him the youngest yordle now, not counting Gnar? :D)

Sharjo2 votes

Couldn't tell you about Kennen, though if yordles are widely distributed across Runeterra then Kennen might end up being Ionian born for all we know. Given the fact that yordles are inherently magical beings Kennen having an affinity for lightning magic probably isn't that unheard of, or at least isn't beyond the realms of possibility; he's not an odd one out in terms of yordles, but just the stretching of the boundaries that yordles exist within. Hopefully that pile of nonsense I just said made some kind of sense.

Given the fact we know so little about yordle ages right now it's hard to say anything really. I mean I assumed four in yordles years for Gnar meant like two human years, but no it could be forty for all we know. I'd assume that Heimerdinger's the oldest of the yordle's we have right now, given his appearance and old scientist persona. I would also say Lulu's probably fairly old, Ziggs is probably an adult yordle right now, so a few centuries at least, and I'd put Teemo, Tristana and Rumble as being among the youngest yordles.

I dunno where Veigar fits in terms of age. That's beyond me right now.

Marbelara1 votes

Thank you for the answer!

I, sadly, based my assumption that Kennen is younger on a false belief that he has joined kinkou recently (maybe because his bio deals so much with his childhood?). Whoops. :/

Now that I've read it again, it doesn't look like his age is specified in any way. On the contrary:

He was born in bandle (explictly stated), and had all the time he needed to grow up before 'revealing' himself in Ionia, if the 'revealing' is a yordle thing now.

Also, he was in Kinkou before specifically bonding with Shen and Akali. (That's my mistake right here) Given the new yordle characteristics, that might've been quite a long time, actually. (Though taking into account the ancient history of the order, it wouldn't seem so by comparision!)

"The Heart of the Tempest beats eternal... and those beaten remember eternally."

Sharjo2 votes

I like the notion that Kennen might be the oldest member of the Kinkou. Dunno why, I just kinda like it.

This story makes no sense when you look at the known universe of league's lore. Poppy is how old exactly if Demacia was a brand new nation who has gone through multiple Kings and probably hundreds of years.

"She accompanied him to the site of the new settlement–an ambitious new nation called Demacia, where all were welcome, regardless of station or background, so long as they contributed to the good of the whole."

That isn't the Demacia we currently have in the present(IF you make the assumption that Poppy has been on this journey for hundreds of years). Demacia as it currently is more of a self-righteous nation filled with the mentality that Honor and position are everything. You can look to Garen's, Lux's, and Fiora's stories for that. The only people who seem to be an exception to this rule are Shyvana, Xin Zhao, Galio, and Quinn(to name a short few). Of which, these people are more notably known for their loyalty.

The problem with this story is that you can't just recon small sections of the existing lore without fixing the parts you broke. As it stands, we have a Demacia which is apparently both new and old, a yordle who is either young(young demacia) or old (old demacia). This would break the lore of Lulu as well as she is young only because of Pix luring her into the Glade and the time in the Glade stood at a standstill.

By extension how can you have a Jarvan the 4th if Demacia is new? Was Jarvan the 1st and Jarvan the 2nd not kings? And then by that thought you would have to conclude that Jarvan the 3rd founded Demacia or became King soon after it was established.

The Lore team made a good effort but they made a bunch of mistakes with this current story for Poppy.

Sharjo1 votes

This story makes no sense when you look at the known universe of league's lore.

Hardly any of the lore we have for Demacia can be considered 100% reliable anymore considering this is a new Runeterra and Demacia's up for as many changes as anywhere else.

Poppy is how old exactly if Demacia was a brand new nation who has gone through multiple Kings and probably hundreds of years.

This is new stuff for yordles; and indicative of what Riot's got in story for them lore wise.

Poppy's lore is set what must be several centuries before any Demacia lore we've ever gotten with the exception of J1's death. Nations change over time, as do people, as does anything.

By extension how can you have a Jarvan the 4th if Demacia is new? Was Jarvan the 1st and Jarvan the 2nd not kings? And then by that thought you would have to conclude that Jarvan the 3rd founded Demacia or became King soon after it was established.

J1 died long before J2 was born. He has to have or else Sion wouldn't have been forgotten in Noxus. J1 didn't sire J2, J3 is the current king and the son of J2, who was the king before him. There's a big gap between J1 and J2 we don't know much about yet. Orlon founded Demacia presumably many years before J1 got on the throne.

The Lore team made a good effort but they made a bunch of mistakes with this current story for Poppy.

You assume that they haven't already made this make sense internally, which they will already have. The fact they've even brought up Orlon and Demacia's founding means they've more or less sorted out how Demacia's history works for the most part. Now it's down to the telling.

The Poppy lore indicates the following:

  • Poppy is born.
  • Many centuries ago, Orlon founded Demacia.
  • Centuries later, J1 was king. He ended up in a war with Noxus and got killed by Sion.
  • J2 took up the throne many centuries later from someone else. We don;t know who.
  • J3 took up the throne after J2. He's still reigning in the modern day.
  • Poppy is still alive.

So Poppy's centuries old and we have some more Demacian history. Things still work out even though there's crap ton of yordle questions raised from this.

The problem is if it makes sense internally, then externally it looks horrible. Riot has been doing this for a while now where they release content that doesn't actually have a good directive until months or years down the line. Its like they think that if they leave things vague then it would add intrigue to the lore rather than questioning why theres huge gaps. You can add intrigue to lore by following this methodology but it doesn't work while retconning. You can't half-sync the two lores together and not expect it to look bad.

Also, the story doesn't really give a whole lot of detail to the hammer itself considering Poppy isn't really a champion(personality/content wise) as much as the hammer is the champion. The Hammer of Orlon was wielded by some guy named Orlon who may have been a paragon of a man who just so happened to go the early settlement of Demacia where he helped build it. This does not reference the magical abilities of the hammer itself outside of bard level lore. Just that it was made for someone other than him who could keep Demacia whole. BUT, there is a contradiction to her lore and personality here. Poppy is on an adventure and refuses to believe she is the hero which would make it tough for her to keep Demacia whole if she is out looking for someone who could do so(while killing heroic demacians at the same time). So IF she would to ever move forward with the lore then her ingame VO would have to change to reflect that, if she found out through the lore content that she was the hero all along then why would she talk about finding the hero ingame?

Point of the matter is this... IF they are gonna redo yordles, thats fine, if they are gonna drive Demacia forward into some sort of situation where it goes into civil war, thats also fine, but you cannot write half cooked stories in order to fill them in at a later time. Its just bad writing when the concept of the current lore is to have a living world with champion interactions fleshed out in small arcs in separate spheres within the world and you only get small portion of the arc done and then wait months later to get the whole point behind the previous piece.

Xulsigae1 votes

So how does Poppy keep Demacia whole by wandering around trying to find someone to give the hammer to? If she does keep Demacia whole and she doesn't realize she's the one for the hammer...boy she's ignorant. Especially after how many X hundreds of years she's been at it. Sounds like Poppy more brings misfortune to those she gives the hammer to. She's certainly not malicious of course, but still, after some point I'd think people would stop accepting a hammer that a yordle gives them.

Yordles might have a particular flaw that they can't overcome. Heimerdinger seems rather absent minded and Rumble is very arrogant.

I can see how she would still be friends with Galio in this. Only now the reason is probably because she is just as old as him.

Sharjo7 votes

Instead of a one off meeting inspiring Galio to continue his duty, now they're actually buddies, and perhaps have run in to each other numerous times. I like the idea of Poppy going around Demacia but always ending up passing by Galio every so often, and the two catch up after months or even years of being apart.

Solidair31 votes

So. The Hammer of Orlon. We have confirmed that it is a magical hammer. We know its official name is The Hammer of Orlon. Or does Poppy simply call it that?

Regardless. Did Orlon realize the Hammer was meant for Poppy when he gave it to her, or was he just as clueless as she is? He seemed like a man worthy of wielding it, but did not deem himself its true user. Poppy seems to be much the same. Just yordlier.

In any case, I really liked this lore. I think this is a good direction for Poppy.
