ChampUp are working on Yorick at the moment. Intriguing stuff too.

He's planned to receive a gigantic update in the future if not already ... but reworked into what?

First, this isn't about updating his gameplay. These are inspirations for champion redesign. Second, gameplay updates can be inspired by these new or edited themes you suggest.

Here are some ideas. Please suggest your own in similar format! :D

  1. Yorick - the Ghoulish Gravedigger Yorick is a malformed cannibalistic monster.

Yorick becomes a ghoul. In LoL, a ghoul can be identified as an unliving. An unliving is someone who has passed into the afterlife while they were alive (not after death). Yorick becomes an obnoxious, pale and flesh-colored crawling thing with unnatural transformations to perk his need to feed. The Difference: Undead are restless; Unliving are arrested. The unliving can persist like undead but depend on life essence (e.g. blood) or they'll become dormant and motionless. They also retain their physical bodies; not fused with impermeable material like Hecarim or Mordekaiser. These are ways for them to anchor in the corporeal world. With this understanding, unliving are volatile and potentially much more violent like Sion.

Yorick endured the curse of the Shadow Isle long enough for it to consume him. For a time the land was lush and fruitful until the curse harrowed the land, and all its life was taken. There was no life source and no-one alive but Yorick. Bereaved and starving, Yorick sought to alleviate his stresses in finding a way to cure the land but was limited to only find ways to survive. He became thin and weak, and less resilient to the tinging harrowing of this curse. His weakness lowered his defences enough for the curse to occupy him. In his mind, every ailment was gone except for the one need to feed.

Yorick realized he could feed on anything but he knew where he buried the dead. He hurried there and hastily dug their graves and wafted with the rotting of their corpses. The ghoulish transformation began as he fiendishly fed on decomposing flesh and blood, and his eyes filling red. He sprung half-transformed from one grave to another. He knew where else he could find populations to feed on and he could sense their carcasses. He looked his tinseled red eyes into the direction and made haste on all fours. The surge of gluttony desperately transformed his body until he arrived, starving, flailing wildly as every other ghoul was feeding upon each other. His mind was deteriorating or overwhelmed with hunger and the excitement of the battlefield.

For a moment he paused as his mind questioned morality and confusion but quickly let a bellowing howl. Yorick fought to feed. In his mind was to survive but the irony was he was not alive anymore! He fought other ghouls, ate their battered flesh and curdled blood. He was at a tactical vantage and fought tirelessly until the end when every ghoul was feeding on everything, and everything had calmed because of Yorick.

PROBLEM: There's no characteristics in this short story. It's more about what he becomes. Tahm Kench theme is about peculiar sorts of hunger so this Yorick may need further definition.

######This idea is inspired by my own ideas that establishes a symmetry between LoL's world of undead and (new) unliving; consistent expansion upon a fictional world. [READ MORE]

  1. Yorick - the Herald of the Dead Yorick not completely consumed by the curse found new purpose.

http://i.imgur.com/F2cxuJc.jpg

Yorick becomes a spirit medium who started his new 'life' as a grave digger. When the curse consumed him he was able to retain his corporeal form. He assumed the worse and thought he had died, and upon realizing the undying spirits were revealed to him. He was not a mage and none of this made sense to him but some of the undying spirits knew him and asked for him to bury their corpses. He learned to understand their voices over time and during that time he was confused why he was never hungry and never slept. Yorick felt normal .. but walked like a zombie. Every day looked the same and soon did not realize the difference. There was nothing for Yorick to do, nothing made any sense but the voices of the dead. Following their instruction he wandered to locate and bury the dead on the corners or Isles where life is barely kept.

As Yorick wandered the Isles he experienced all kinds of unnatural phenomena due to the curse that had harrowed the land. Inconsistent wailing chimes with occasional reverberating sounds of chains was heard and lonely Yorick thought to commune back the same. It made no sense and he only sounded the voice of a typical zombie. He was the only zombie, it seemed. Everyone else was a ghost or a corpse but Yorick seemed to retain his corporeal body and that was unique to him and everyone, and may be why ghosts come to him. He is their link to the corporeal world. Mordekaiser and Hecarim are the subjugators and bringers of undeath so they'll never turn to them - only Yorick.

He had buried some few corpses and continued his travels while speaking with the undead spirits. It was comforting. He strayed into locations known for their previous magical torrent and encountered a tree. He recognized these trees in his childhood but they were deformed. Yorick's emotions pummeled and stood gazing, life-drained for a while when a tree moved, struggling. 'a treant!'. He hurdled towards it, stumbling, and saw it was in trouble. He wanted to help .. but how?

The treant was able to fend for itself but Yorick was not seasoned in battle to identify this. He watched and behind him the undying spirits also watched. Those spirits he helped had felt the same emotion as Yorick and they also must have wanted to help. How? How can death fight death? One fierce ghost with spears whispered in his ear prompting Yorick to give the command, and Yorick knew why else they had summoned here.

Yorick pointing his spade gave the command that compelled the undying spirits to fulfill the command. What was Yorick capable of? They wisped through his corporeal body and charged. The treant looked to Yorick when the curse was grappling it but then came a howl of ghosts loosening the grip, slowing it down, and the treant fled.

PROBLEM: Zombie-like and curse may conflict with Amumu theme. EDIT: updated Karthus lore is the diplomatic herald theme.

  1. Yorick - the Grim Doppelganger (double-goer) - [Read] Yorick persists through vessels of other's whether dead or alive.

I'd rather keep him the gravedigger that grudgingly does him job even though he gets no recognition for it. He's a guide for the dead and should remain mostly neutral and NOT a generic evil undead.

I like the unliving idea. But I really do see Yorick as the guy who does what he does, because nobody else will. He has a bit of pessimism with every phrase and he has to be sarcastic because otherwise he'll go crazy. He has a crappy job. But he does it and it helps him to reflect on his life.

  • He wants to be remembered
  • He wants to care for the dead
  • He is a brute and a hunchback, so he can't handle more civilized work

I rather see him as a civilian in Noxus. He's the one who handles the burial of loads of people on a daily basis.

Yorick - the Grim Doppelganger (double-goer) Yorick persists through vessels of other's whether dead or alive.

This Yorick gives the impression of an ordinary enigmatic and undying soul timelessly roaming the Shadow Isle. A closer examination reveals distinction when you see a conscience through its ghastly form somehow prompting you of an unexpected action that it's ready to impart. Unlike some champions of the undead who find ways to persist in the corporeal world, the weaker or more unfortunate undying souls reside somewhere hidden. I suppose this Yorick is a variation of Hecarim's appearance whose fusion of men, horse and solid material creates a terrifying horseman of an apocalypse. Yorick takes the form of flesh and bone.

Without an anchor in the corporeal world may feel like floating in space or a freedom of Will, and all without that caress of Time that compliments and acknowledges the living.

Yorick Mori made his living as a gravedigger with his family-owned business the Final Rest Memorial. Each gravedigger taught his son that to hearse the dead is to respect that person's life and treat their death, and that those spirits would protect him during the long lonely nights amongst the tombstones. To his eternal regret, Yorick died without a heir, bringing the proud Mori line to a close. His body was interred with his shovel in the family mausoleum, and the Final Rest Memorial soon fell to ruin.

What time had past was unknown to Yorick. The Final Rest Memorial and the surrounding land had become thick with a black fog. The land had been cursed! Looking and thinking tossed Yorick's ghastly self across the land not quite realizing what's happening. Flurries of whistling and escalations of voices wailing or crying, and the land was deteriorating like ink trickling into weaves of fabric. There was a terrible bereavement from everyone around him that somehow Yorick began to feel the same. He was overwhelmed with the same sorrow.

Yorick saw his graveyard razed by the curse as skeletons risen from their graves. The ghosts he could see and hear around him were not as incomprehensible as this monster, and so he tried to fight it. Upon immediately entering combat, without realizing Yorick's old shovel manifested as he recalled it and swung the incorporeal weapon. He could only manipulate its movement though up-close he noticed something peculiar about the idle skeleton. It was as if looking into a glass bauble but in the silhouette of a humanoid protruding from the skeleton. Curious Yorick went to examine further when suddenly the curse-filled skeleton warped his essence.

Flesh was forming around the skeleton rapidly. Bodily organs were ripping and igniting, and forming life from death. The horrifying display brought an impartially-restored body with Yorick's mind and soul in it, and he felt alive again. Granted by the Black Mist, he found his way to live on the edge of mortality.

He wielded the shovel and collected a dirty blanket from the ground, wrapping it around himself and without thought just began resuming his memories in life. Yorick mirrored his life in death by tending to the woes of the cursed dead. Pretending to be alive became too familiar and depressing. He soon learned that he could act as a ferryman for the Isles' undead denizens, helping them climb death's many-tiered ladder. With purpose, Yorick dug unrelentingly as a ghoul and surveyed tirelessly as a spectre, waiting in vain for the day when he would be freed of this curse. People are obliged assist his chapel for all he has done for them in life and death, and he became a torrent of their grief.

As he continued to wear away his corporeal body it began to weaken and disintegrate until he effortlessly slipped out of it as a geist and slowly vanished with the blanket. As decades turned to centuries, Yorick Mori earned recognition more in death than in life as the gallant nobleman, the 'good ghost' whose stabilizing equation of the Isles' brings an eerie repose against the insanity.

PROBLEM: Switching between spectre and ghoul is a thematic similar to Elise/Gnar?

Yorick is able to assume an 'empty vessel' and live through it for a time allowing him exploit an illusion of life. Any ghost may assume an empty vessel though Yorick had developed an affinity either by natural talent or years of exposure to the deceased from which may grant him additional potency.

Yorick is missing from the start of Harrowing story Shadow & Fortune. I figured with all the hype we can resume to guess what a reworked Yorick will become.

#Thoughts?

Personally, I'm liking my third fan fiction best. It retains some or most of Yorick's previous background and character into new gameplay/kit.
