Riot won't ever change Varus because of the Music Video

So as you could tell, there are A LOT of people who are not happy with the new story of Varus. I'm not getting into my reasoning, I have a thread open for it already if you want to read why I am upset about it.

https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/AynzcA3s-as-a-husband-changing-varuss-story-has-broken-my-heart-open-letter-to-riot

Now, just by scrolling through the boards, all that everyone has been talking about is Varus and how upset people are about it. Here is the saddest part about this though.

The music video. (not its quality, it was a great looking video)

Making these types of videos are expensive and take a long time to do. So now that they are invested in this expensive video, they HAVE to stand behind it. They can't just say "Hey guys we messed up, we took your thoughts into consideration and will rewrite his story." NOPE. NEVER GONNA HAPPEN.

They invested WAAAY too many resources in a story that they didn't even test out! They were just like "yea here you go, hope for the best." So they are going to do whatever they can to try and redeem it. To try and lie to us and THEMSELVES by saying "Hey! twitter likes it! we understand that you guys don't like it but there are so many people to please! It's hard to please everyone so please understand." Riot will deflect answers, and beat around the bush but they will not change a single WORD to his lore. They will defend it and say "we understand your criticism" and will do NOTHING about it. They are not going to fix their Ret con, they are going to leave it as is and say their famous production line, "we have other pressing matters so we will revisit Varus at another time." which will probably be in 6 years.

So strap in and get used to this new Varus that no one asked for. Cause Riot is NOT touching his story for a long time.

Wanna get an idea of how much they spent on this video? Lets do a little break down shall we!

This is an estimate and my numbers are waaay off but here is my way of thinking.

Here is an example. Rhaast has an interaction with Varus, he mentions that Varus is a darkin, here is the link to the proof

https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/xAhvK4rp-holy-crapit-all-makes-sense-now

Kayn was released on July 12th 2017, I was reading that a champion can take anywhere from 3 months of development to up to a year. So let's be kind and say that Kayn took 3 months (I doubt it but for fun lets go with 3) and he was released 4 months ago (rounding down)

So, if they had started writing his lines half way through his production, that means this video has been in the works around the time Kayn was in production (atleast). But again, for fun, let's say when they started writing Rhaast's lines is when they started on this video. That would equal to about 6 months of work.

NOW! Lucky for you I work at an animation studio! So if you had a bare bones crew working on this you would have 1 director, 1 story board artist, 3 animators, 3 compositors, 1 modeler and rigger, and of course an editor to make the leica (or reference) reel. That's 10 people working on one project for 6 months. Now let's say they make, an average of $35,000 a year. Simple math, $35,000 x 10 then divide the total by 2.

That's $175,000.

THAT's BEFORE the song/music!

So yea, Riot is not going to be like "Hey guys! Look at our $175,000 mistake! We are just gonna toss it now and redo the story" Nope. They are standing by it because they HAVE to.

It seems like they invested those resources exactly so they could force the new story down our throats. According to some of the Riot posts on Reddit, they expected about this amount of "upset" over the change to Varus's lore. Usually there's some negative feedback with lore changes and much less positive feedback because most players simply aren't interested in the lore.

It's almost like Riot stalled to give us this new story that they had been planning for probably more than a year until they could get the music video and comic finished so that all the people who don't normally pay attention to the lore would be excited by this youtube video and provide positive feedback about its quality and production value to drown out the people who care and make their opinions worthless in the grand scheme of things.

They actually did test it out accidentally and people fucking hated it then too.

They no doubt spent A LOT of money on it.

But see Darius above. It is chump change. Riot made like $8,000,000 from just the Champ Ashe skin/ward. Your estimate seems low (35k is not a high salary) but yea it isn't very much compared to their total. But still enough that I can understand them not wanting to take it down.

They don't have to take it down, they can just fix it in pieces. And I think they could change like a few scenes in the Vid if they wanted (won't).

They’re also not going to back down on any changes related to homosexuality because that won’t be seen well

does it even matter? riot is famous for sticking to awful decisions just because of their egos. this is just the cherry on top.

Most likely.

They siad that a major backlash on the new lore would have it to be taken back but I don't see this happening considering the work and investment of resources they put in the video and the comics.

Chump change they will just make a new ahri skin so they can make 10 more music videos to ruin beloved champs with.

I like the new lore. I've seen a varus in almost every game so therefore there are plenty who find his new lore interesting and actively want to play him. just because you dont like it doesnt mean everyone doesnt like it. It is not good to make a generalization. "No one asked for this" except that many people wanted new lore for older characters with lackluster lore. It has been asked for.

The boards are a very small percentage of players according to Riot so just because theres a few threads on here with a good amount of upvotes doesnt mean that that is the opinion of every single person playing league. Those who loved the new lore are less likely to come to the boards to praise it. Those who dislike it are going to come here to complain.

Riot will not change the lore. You will just have to play a new character if you are unhappy with this one.

Yeah, I was going to do a post asking what the board things riot should do to fix Varus, but then I remembered the video.

I watched the music video and thought it was nice but it lacked the emotional punch I would have expected for a story about Varus. And if it had come out for any other champ I probably would have thought it was good even. And I watched the making of video and it hit me why the new video seams lacking. The designers wanted and emotionally charged video and they saw romantic love as the most powerful emotion. But old Varus had a powerful combination of emotions: romantic love, familial love, regret, anguish, loyalty, and hatred. Its no wonder that talking away all those emotions leaves you with something hollow in comparison. Even if romantic love is the most powerful emotion, a point I would strongly contest, there's no way it could ever fill the emotional void left behind from the emotions evoked by old Varus' lore.

Yeah, t's too late now. Maybe Riot should mention (or forgot to?) that they are also retconning characters. Not just the Institute and summoners. Maybe people would be more open to retcons if they said that?

Riot didnt change the orange essence nerf from Lootboxes, they wont change this as well. They put too much into Varuses new lore to just simply scrap it all cause of fans. Sad, but true.

Well, you're right with one thing, and that's that they put a lot of money towards it. But where you're completely wrong is with how the people working on this stuff are compensated. For $35k (or ~$18/h) you won't find animators, editors, directors, modelers, etc.

So let's be a bit more lenient and double that. So they haven't spent 175k, but 350k. Let's round to 400k. Now this story makes more sense. For 400k, they wouldn't necessarily abandon an idea. That's for sure. But for 175k, that's still a considerably small amount that they could lose without bigger repercussions.

Now, just by scrolling through the boards, all that everyone has been talking about is Varus and how upset people are about it.

Well- no. I can go to the Hot page right now and find at least half a dozen threads that have nothing to do with Varus. Announcing and explaining dislike is all well and good- but exaggeration is always silly. I know there was a poll a while ago that, while slanted towards liking the old lore, wasn't so slanted as 2-1 when I looked at it. Both sides had hundreds of votes. Given that an investment in the lore is one reason many of the board-users come here- I would expect that slant anyways when a change occurs.

To try and lie to us and THEMSELVES by saying "Hey! twitter likes it! we understand that you guys don't like it but there are so many people to please! It's hard to please everyone so please understand."

Is that a lie? I have a hard time believing you have more information about the topic than Riot does. If they say people like the change on Twitter or Reddit or whatever social media they're looking at- those people likely exist. The Boards are definitely a minority- tens (hundreds?) of thousands of people use the other outlets- it's rare for any thread to get more than a couple hundred upvotes here. If 99% of 1,000 people dislike a change and 25% of 5,000 people like it, I don't have a hard time telling which group is larger.

Nope. They are standing by it because they HAVE to.

Also maybe, just maybe, it wasn't a bad choice? Various people don't like it- that doesn't make it a bad call. Few people were happy with the Sion rework- doesn't mean it was a bad call to do it.

I like the new lore tho. Boards seems way more hostile towards the change than anywhere else I've seen.

This is super disappointing. I think you're probably right.
