Why Does Almost Every Female Mage-Like Champ Have Their Name End with the letter A?

StellarPrime·3/30/2015, 6:42:22 PM·7 votes·5,518 views

Anivia Anivia, Cassiopeia Cassiopeia, Diana Diana, Janna Janna, Kalista Kalista, Karma Karma, Katarina Katarina, Leona Leona, Lissandra Lissandra, Morgana Morgana, Orianna Orianna, Shyvana Shyvana, Sona Sona, Soraka Soraka, Syndra Syndra, and Zyra Zyra.

There are also champs: Fiora Fiora and Irelia Irelia but they're not as "magical" as the ones above.

So other than them being female and magical is there something they all have in common?

Adding a vowel onto the end of a name tends to make it sound more feminine, and a lot of common female names end in a vowel (or y, which is sometimes a vowel).

You're looking for something that's not there.

It's to make any name sound more feminine.

You fool, everyone knows A is a magical letter, imbuing the user with the edge they need in combat, you may not be aware of it, but Zed's real name is....Zeda.

@ Ghos, Lux's full first name is Luxanna :L

And LeBlanc's real name is Emilia....or Evaine, depending what side of the lore you want to believe (if any).

This brings back fond memories of Dawngate, where "way too many female characters in our game have names that end in an "ah" sound" is listed as an actual design flaw in the lore primer.

Not to say that it's a crippling flaw, but it does make all the characters sound very same-y.

A is used as a marker for feminine name endings, at least in English (Sasha is used as a girl's name over here, but n Russian it's actually a mascine shortening of Alexander), and a lot of those names are invented so they need something to mark them as feminine. Most of the female champ's names that don;t end in a (annie, caitlyn, akali, etc) are real names in their own right

It's a common thing in most fantasy settings. Look at most fantasy writing and games and they do the same thing. It's stupid.

I was alot more strict about being a mage than you were, i had 11. you had 16 but should probably cross off katarina, kalista, shyvana, bring you to 13.

Of all the female champs in league: 39 total 20 end in -a (including Luxanna Crownguard and Shauna Vayne)

Well, to be fair, Irelia is a god damn zombie that can move blades with her mind, so she sorta qualifies as well.

You also forgot Lux, her real name is Luxanna.
