From the comic, we see that the man, after saying he got what was coming to him, says that he was trying to steal from him, and he pulls out his gun to show that he attempted to steal his gun. He then shoots, making me think he's just some crazy guy who wants to shoot the next kid who comes to him.

It's possible the man only said "He tried to steal this..." because he was pulling out the weapon to shoot Ekko. No, I won't blame the guy for trying to defend himself. Some kid came out of nowhere possibly trying to mug him.
HOWEVER, this guy just shot a kid and was WHISTLING! I don't care about the circumstances that Piltie found himself in. He was whistling Dixie after shooting someone and leaving them for dead. If you consider Ajuna or Ekko the bad guy in that situation, then you obviously don't get the concept of what it's like living in the gutter.

Shame he lived. Glad Ekko didn't go through with it in the end, but that whistling dick escaped any form of justice. Hope he has a slip of tongue around Vi or something, because I know she knows where to draw the line... and how to make it as painful as possible.

Well, Ekko has 16 - 17 years aprox according to the QaA... anyways it could be a past memory... and Ekko was armed, Ajuna was not.

Technically, no. When the man shot Ekko's Z-drive it was either "kill him" or go see his friend one more time. He chose to be there for his friend's final moments. After that, he had to fix the Z-drive.

Considering his small size, and... Well... His age, he doesn't pose much of a threat to a full grown man. It could explain why he didn't get a good look at the guy because he snuck up on him from behind.

GreenLore1 votesHe probably saw ajuna and shot him(he had a gun,so I assume he simply shot ajuna instead of beating him up) for some reason.
There are multiple possible reasons for why he could have done,for example he might have seen ajuna stealing something,or he thought that ajuna heard something that the guy wanted to keep a secret or some other small offense that ajuna did without even realizing. In the worst case scenario the guy was just evil and killed ajuna for fun.
