What Runeterra actually looks like

Even since Riot released the map of Runeterra, one question has been bothering me. What kind of map projection did Riot use?

You see, a rectangular map doesn't look the same on a sphere. Thats because you can't wrap a ractangle around a sphere without leaving extra space on the ractangle. Luckily for us, this problem has been solved a long time ago by cartographers: projections.

Now lets assume that Runeterra is also a sphere (oblate spheroid) just like Earth. That would mean that projections would also work with it.

One of the most common types of rectangular projections used is called Gall-Peters projection and it looks something like this: https://i.imgur.com/O5hbTqd.jpg[] Its main upside is the fact that it preserves relative sizes. Greenland and Africa here have a ratio of about 1:14 which is their actual ratio. But as you can see this projection does a poor job of preserving shape. As you go further North and South, things become squished, while stuff near the Equator is elongated.

Now, if the map of Runeterra is a Gall-Peters projection then that would mean that Freljord, Northern Ionia and the Northen Continent are squished as well. That would also mean that Shurima is narrower than we think it is. https://i.imgur.com/fuLYaga.jpg[] But that wouldn't make much sence, since most of the coastline and mountain ranges seem to be undistorted. Gall-Peters only preserves the shape of the planet between 30-60 latitudes.

Here's where it gets really juicy. There's another popular projection type called Mercator projection and it looks as follows: https://i.imgur.com/9NwW6tR.jpg[] As you can see, Mercator doesn't care much about relative sizes but preserves relative shapes instead. Nothing is distorted and all the straight lines on this map would be straight lines on a sphere.

Now, I want you to take a look at the gigantic southern continent right there? Pretty huge, right? Take a look at this: https://i.imgur.com/wRzk8YG.jpg[] That giant thing is actually only the 5th largest continent on Earth.

https://i.imgur.com/6KtPVDy.jpg[] This looks familiar. Only the Mercator would show you something this enormous in the North or in the South. That leads me to believe that Riot is indeed using the Mercator projection.

But I'm not done here. Sure, I can determine the type of projection Riot is using, but can I demonstrate what it would look like on a sphere? (yes) The first thing I need to do is to un-Mercator the projection. Sounds easy enough. https://youtu.be/-NNssPSCl2M?t=56 In a video Riot released along with the map just for a moment they showed us climate zones and ocean currents, as we-e-ell as most needed latitude lines. I marked only the ones I needed (Equator, 30 and 60 degrees). https://i.imgur.com/ZZ40Tru.jpg[]

Now, the Mercator projection usually has a longer distance between Equator and 30 than between 30 and 60, but since Riot didn't really had that difference I decided not to add it as well (consequenses!!!). But the length of 60-90 must be squished in order to un-Mercator the projection, like this. https://i.imgur.com/f1ytwHv.jpg[]

Before we smack this bad boy on a sphere consider the fact that Riot mentioned the map shows approximately only the 6th of the surface, so I scaled it accordingly. The moment we've all being waiting for: https://i.imgur.com/MqssoWR.jpg[]

View from the top: https://i.imgur.com/Khbl8qL.jpg[]

AND this is how it would look like if I didn't un-Mercator the map: https://i.imgur.com/11q5Ui3.jpg[] Big oof.

Hopefully, you enjoyed the post as much as I enjoyed my suffering and pain while trying to squish and resize the map and then try to fit it on a sphere. TL:DR: Map not right shape, me make shape right, make shape on another shape make map look like world.

A map has been mentioned. I feel Bioluminescence approaching.

But jokes aside, that's really cool. I've been wondering how the map would look like with accurate proportions for quite a while now. Thanks for demonstrating the actual sizes and shapes of the continents.

You don't know me.

Hi, Bio! Good to see you here. So about that 60 degree latitude line. Whats up with it? It's most definitely placed too low. Middle of Valoran got stretched a bit because of that.

Not to be rude, but how come Rioters only respond to hypothetical questions like this but not the skin feedback / bug reports?

Not rude at all to ask. Every Rioter has a different area of expertise or knowledge, and for example, I'm not on the teams involved on the game or cosmetics of League itself - it's not my specialist subject. It's up to every Rioter to decide how much to engage, and where they do so - but we are discouraged (and rightly so) for weighing in on subjects that we aren't on the team for, or cannot speak for them.

It'd be really bad if I went into a bug thread, threw around some uneducated opinions, and just made everyone much worse off.

Just out of curiosity, what are the credentials Riot (and other devs if it's comparable) for the/a world building team? Is it just art portfolio? Or do they look for something more "exotic?"

i don't think AFK Yuumi Main implied you should make more posts in topics you aren't responsible for. i know there was a female Rioter who was quite active some time ago in the skin department.

but it's sad there is not more attention payed to the skin and balance topics in in the forum. seems like reddit is really Riots baby and gets more serious attention - or some Rioters really like more to fart into the faces of co-workers as some ex?-journalist on youtube revealed. and it seems this guy and Riot don't like each other much. guess why.

It worked on me! I do love a good map thread!

I could have shortened your efforts a little, as yes, the Runeterra map as shared with players has a somewhat rectilinear projection. This has been mentioned once or twice, but certainly not broadly stated, so understandable that you missed it.

When I'm checking out the full globe map (sorry flat-Runeterrans) I use G-projector as my tool of choice, and yes - as shown, the Freljord and the northernmost coast of Ionia gets pretty stretched. I like how you fixed it on your version :D You did very well indeed and I admire your rigor and skills!

So there are other parts of the map that are "confirmed" so to say; even if we never see it/go there?

We know there is something to the east, which gave rise to cultures like Helia, Buhru, and Targon.

I assumed they used Mercator since that seems to be the most common projection type I see for fantasy maps, but now that you mention it, we don't really know for sure. I suppose if they wanted to be extra realistic, they should've used the Hereford projection method.

The closest thing I can think of is probably that Shurima map they made a while ago. I could totally do with a few more maps like these. http://i.imgur.com/gGCznIo.jpg[]

Other may be able to confirm, but I think it's from a Shurima Event back in 2014 when Azir was added.

That one (I also made) was more inspired by T and O maps, but even more abstract in many ways. Also, the cartographer got some of it wrong, as was often the case with ancient maps. But the creator viewed Shurima as the center of the world, and thus everything revolved around it. Distances were not important, so much as routes were. It was definitely an experiment for me with more symbolic and less literal style maps!

Yeah tbh when I saw that new map I was like "This isn't all of the planet, right?"

The planet would either be really small or have a HUGE area of blank ocean (or undiscovered land)

People suspect that some champions (such as Shaco, Fiddlesticks, everyone from Kalista's kingdom like herself, Hecarim, and the Ruined King) are from whatever continents are on the other side of the world. Seeing this map, it definitely enforces my and many others' theory that the Ruined King's kingdom could have been on the other hemisphere; the Blessed Isles seem to be right in the middle of the ocean, so it would probably not be the biggest trip for someone from an unseen continent. Who knows with Shaco and Fiddlesticks, but at least we'll know Fiddlesticks's origins by the end of next year.

I thought Kalista and Hecarim came from the kindgom that was near Noxus and erased by the Rune Wars.

I'd say it's highly likely. From Kalista's latest story theres a subtle hint where she's referred to as "Spear of the Argent Throne". With the throne being the ruined king's and feasibly a connection to the Argent mountains. So yeah, I'm betting on them coming from Valoran rather than some undiscovered place.

On subject of new continents, lore has yet to make any substantial push for expanding the map of Runeterra and I'm fairly confident we wont see any branching out any time soon.

Ah could be. I don't think it's confirmed; maybe if the new marksman is indeed a Blessed Isles champion we'll get more info on that soon?

Idk why there's so much comparison to a sphere when we live on a rectangle.

Some of us live in a rectangle. Some of us step outside the rectangle and achieve greatness.

Shuriman continent bigger than Valoran. Looks accuarate (no joke, Riot confirmed Shuriman continent is bigger than Valoran)

Source for this because i cant find it. It was always weird that Shurima was half the size of valoran despite it being described as a vast desert continent.

I dunno it was about a 2 weeks - month ago. You can check the red posts if you really want to find it.

The summary is that the when zoomed all the way out the Runeterra webmap is flat but of course a globe is round. Shurima being on the equator means it should appear bigger when viewed on a proper globe because of how spheres work.

This happens with maps of today too. Since the Earth is (more or less) a sphere, and paper or digital maps are 2 dimensional, there will always be some kind of distortion in projecting geographic information from one to the other. There are a variety of projections which can minimize this effect in different parts of the globe, or standardize it in a way that makes the resulting map more accurate or easier to use. However, it is unavoidable that any flat map will have some kind of distortion.

I always thought I saw a resemblance to that part of Greece. But the map of Runaterra leaves many doubts, I think that there are more unexplored regions and that the world is bigger

The map is just 1/6th of the planet. Riot has confirmed this several times.
