Idea for Pantheon VGU

So how about we do GP all over again?

First he recieves a skin masked as a new model, then in a story something almost kills Pantheon (ASol most likely), he comes back with a proper model.

The skin can be called something like Celestial Pantheon and armor from Targon Prime. Oh, and add star-cape as well. The base skin on the other hand would have Rakkor armor design with a regular cape.

A problem people have with his lore can also be solved that way: after near death experience some part of Atreus comes back. His VO can also change: with the skin we hear only Pantheon the aspect, while base adds Atreus or even replaces Pantheon. He could remain but only heard by Atreus, maybe have something similar to Kayn/Rhaast relationship.

Thoughts?

The death of Gangplank worked so well because no one saw it coming, people were genuinely concerned if he was removed from the game. So with a champion like where most people may either: a) want Atreus to completely be free of Pantheon or b) not care about Atreus since Pantheon could always find a new host, it wouldn't work because people would be expecting either outcome.

I strongly believe Riot may end up toning down the implications of Pantheon's possession over Atreus, maybe so that he represents Atreus' ideal to protect the Rakkor at any extreme. Unlike a lot people I want both Atreus and Panth to stay, but without them being is some conflict over Atreus' body, I rather they become a single entity, 'Atreus' version of Pantheon', allowing Riot to also explore other version's of Pantheon that aren't Atreus, as teased in AurelionSol 's short story. Of course I am biased since this fits my desire to see multiple versions of Pantheon interact and would allow for other Pantheons to be introduced into the game, since they would no longer all be the same person.

I mean when the Pantheon lore hit and us angry fans voiced our displeasure at it, Jaredan straight up said “Atreus’s story is not done.” So it’s kind of already been spoiled that he will either break free from Pantheon’s control (fulfilling the whole never give up or admit defeat shtick he had in his lore) or some other solution.

I think the big problem is Pantheon is defined as “The Spartan” that’s his theme thats his visuals. However Riot doesn’t like that so they created the space parasite thing. And now we have people who like the space parasite and don’t care about the Spartan and those that despise the space parasite and just want to play the Spartan.

There’s not going to be a way to really please those two groups. The more information I hear about Targon and their intergalactic empire and their possession the more bored I get. While I’m certain those interested in all that won’t want to read about some guy in a hegemonic war after going through an agoge and fighting in a phalanx.

Now, while the “death of Pantheon” wouldn’t be as surprising as Gangplank certainly, it could be useful for the players to use OP’s suggestion. Have a Spartan skin to give to those who started playing Pantheon because Sparta. Say it’s, I don’t care, the Atreus skin. Whatever. Then have the space parasite in all its glory for those who care about the story. I don’t. So, as long as I have my Spartan I could just safely ignore it. While everyone who does care gets theirs.

The Aspects are very much, Runeterra's greek gods, I think they chose to explore this side of culture given the magical nature of Runeterra. So I don't think Pantheon's aesthetic will change in any significant way they he is no longer recognizably League's spartan, similar to how Shen is what comes to mind when you think "League's ninja".

The Darkin Wars sounded like an amazing story that combines both sides of this statement, the long warrior history of the Ascended Host that could draw from real world history such an "agoge" as you mentioned (or the appropriate egytian counterpart) and the hegemonic rule they opposed on the rest of the world. I would love to see this story written in greater detail than Twilight of the gods. So while it may not please both groups, there is an intermediate between them.

Which is the problem. I want to be just a Spartan. Give him a personality and a story of course. But at the end of the day, he should be looked at and I’d say, yeah, that’s a Spartan.

As to the Darkin War. That might be the case, if I cared about the Darkin.

Which I don’t. So, eh.

Ultimately if Pantheon's rework results in the opening of design space for Riot to deliver on more spartan inspired (and other greco-roman) characters while keeping him relatively spartan inspired I see no problem.

Based on how he is described in the lore he seems to maintain most what made him the spartan character he was in his previous lore.

*Celestial Aspect bullshit Its the Targon's setting and a minuscule change to the character design given said setting. Similarly look at Zoe and Taric minus the star magic stuff going on with Zoe and the rune on Taric's arm, they are just regular humans. So a spartan with a fancy cape and magical spear isn't that big of a deal. Although the lost of Pantheon's rugged torn cape is something I will miss.

They're from space, and Pantheon's a parasite. Hell, Aatrox literally refers to Pantheon as "a lamprey attached to a host." They make the comparison for me.

It isn't a big deal, to you.

I hate it. I don't like the Targon setting. Or Zoe, or Taric for that matter. Why would I want it on my Spartan?

I'm not denying Pantheon's parasitic relationship with Atreus, however indulging in the setting puts things in a better perspective.

It was a big deal for me, I had to learn to appreciate both sides of the character. I don't look at the story from a toxic view of them as some sort of alien empire controlling humans, rather from the magical setting of the universe. Yes, they are otherworldly, but not alien to setting of Runeterra.

Yeah you dislike the setting, but your main problem is simply you don't want Pantheon to be moved from the 1:1 spartan imitation you prefer. I slightly sympathize with you, in your mind a traditional skin is the only way for you keep the Pantheon you love (which in hindsight I do hope you get). I wish you would have seen that he could still be a spartan in a world where spartans do not exist, but you are just more concerned with being able to make Pantheon work in a world where spartans do exist.

Nothing is wrong with that of course, the irony is that the people truly affected by the lore change, would the be people who were old Panth fans and wanted remain invested in the new Panth, not the people estranged by his new lore.

I just had an idea. What if Atreus and Pantheon are SEPARATED in his VGU and become separate champions? That way, Pantheon can be the Targon full-on 'space-parasite' and Atreus can be the Spartan all the old fans love, and you even get an interesting character dynamic between the two as Atreus would probably have a thing or two to say to the parasite that took over his body for nine years. Also, you also get progression of lore through a VGU again, which is what I think we all loved so much about the 'GP is dead and is unavailable'

Define your version of "full on space parasite", I don't think we'll ever get an Aspect without a host of some kind.

So imo this wouldn't be any different from just adding another spartan champ (that's not an Aspect), to the game.

Well he'd get a new host and have the star cape and space spear (or other weapon) and other stuff people were talking about. And this way Atreus gets to remain a character in the lore... different than just making a whole new champ (which he'd more or less be anyway)

I mean, I wouldn't really want to make the whole thing too similar to GP's. And frankly I think they should just kill Atreus and have us play as Pantheon proper.

Why not let Atreus die and let the Aspect him self come in the game or a new host. Atreus could be killed by Asol

I know but Atreus isn't a impactful nor has a strong character that people will miss and also he isn't even present in game..

Not just in the story for Atreus.

Atreus screaming in wrath at the heaven’s over the body of his only friend. Is the single most powerful moment in the entirety of the Targon lore.

Of course they ruin it a paragraph later when the heavens open up and he gets mind raped. But still that singular moment was actually well written and intense. A rare good thing I can say about a lore updated I have little except distaste for.

Still The Pantheon is its own thing and Atreus is his own person lore wise.
