So with the release of this new Champion Roadmap (finally!), Riot has officially revealed some very interesting news to us regarding reworks as well as a NEW CHAMPION!

So first, let's list off what they revealed:

  1. New FEMALE BURST MAGE!
  2. Details on Swain Rework
  3. IRELIA REWORK CONFIRMED!
  4. Stuff about Aatrox Gameplay Update

Now let's speculate on the new Champion (I've bolded key words in the text regarding the new champ, they have some hidden little clues to what exactly we are getting)

"TOYING WITH TWILIGHT It’s been a long time since we had a new mage (and even longer since we released a new burst mage). With this in mind, we’ve redirected some time to creating a new burst mage with the tools to approach a fight from… interesting angles. We also wanted to take this chance to do something a bit more playful and bubbly as opposed to the dark and serious champions we’ve done recently. The new mage will have unique abilities that haven’t been seen before in League, so hold onto your summoner spells and don’t fall asleep, because change is coming… cataclysmic change. Also, sparkles!"

  • "TOYING WITH TWILIGHT" - First off, the name alone gives me a little idea of what this new burst mage is. "Toying" may refer to the character being either a child, or simply very childish and playful, which most definetly is true! The image hint is literally bubbles, sparkles and butterflies. Now the word "Twilight" is where it gets interesting. We've only really seen the term 'twilight' used once in League; Shen, the Eye of the Twilight. Now, what is Shen exactly? He's basically the person who acts as the line between the Spirit world and the Physical world. We've had some details on this Spirit world through many pieces of lore; the Vastaya have a direct ancestry linking to the spirit world, all natural magic derives from the spirit world, and it's most likely the place where beings like Kindred, Maokai or Janna come from. My theory; The New Champion is a Spirit, and her release will give us more details on what exactly a 'spirit' is, just like how Evelynn revealed how Demons work. Another piece of evidence to this; I had theorized before that 'Demons' are just an evil name for 'Spirits' who do bad things, but Evelynn reveals they are actually a slightly different species that have ties to negative mortal emotions. Maybe this new Champion will finally put my theory to rest and reveal the distinctions between spirits and demons! PS: It's also mentioned that "Change is coming...cataclysmic change." The word 'Cataclysm' puts the RuneWars to my head, which is directly tied to the birth of a demoness, specifically Evelynn, another hint that this may be a Spirit champion and that they have some connection to the Rune Wars.

  • "Approach a fight from...interesting angles." "Unique abilities never before seen in League" - Now I can't say too much on what this means, but what I can say is that this means were getting something entirely new and out-of-the-box, as most new Champions tend to be. Ornn's able to forge his own items, Aurelion Sol can't play hide-and-seek, and Ivern TALKS to jungle monsters. Perhaps 'interesting angles' may mean that they effect teamfights from a far distance away, so I can't WAIT for what were getting next, since I don't know what to expect!

  • "Playful and bubbly" - More details on their more positive, childish theme compared to our darker, more serious characters we've gotten lately, probably Lulu style childish! Also, the term "Bubbly" may also be a hint to the overarching theme of the new champion's kit, as we actually have images of BUBBLES in the teaser image!

  • "Hold onto your summoner spells and don't fall asleep" - Some of these new 'never before seen' kind of abilities mentioned before. Definetly some kind of interaction with summoner spells, as well as what may be a new type of CC? Sleep?

EDIT: So some new info has emerged, and I think I have a deeper theory! As discussed, a lot of people theorize that this new champion may be some sort of 'antithesis' to Nocturne, where she focuses on dreams rather then nightmares, hence the whimsical theme and the mention of 'sleeping.' Along with that, the new Evelynn AMA gave rise to some new info. 1) We might learn about who else in League is a Demon alongside Tahm and Evelynn and 2) We might get some Nocturne lore as well! This only further proves the idea of this new mage having some connection to Dreams instead of Nightmares.

A Rioter also mentioned that the new mage may 'agree' with someone who has a huge dislike of Lux, which at first was strange considering how bubbly and upbeat Lux is. But then I started thinking, if this new champion has a connection to Nocturne, then maybe they just hate mages in general?

Maybe spirits/demons have a dislike of mages due to their use of magic, a very important resource in the spirit world, just as how Xayah dislikes mages for how they take magic away from the Vastaya. Along with that, Nocturne was last seen in Demacia, and he also mentioned his dislike of 'mages,' going as far as to actually possess one and have a huge fight with Lux and Garen.

The mention of twilight, expressing caution for falling asleep, and the whimsical imagery of butterflies caught in bubbles speaks to me of a champion tied to dreams. We have Nocturne, a living nightmare, so why not introduce the other side of the coin?

I know skins don't really tie into actual lore, but from the info we've got here's what I have to offer:

  • The butterflies in the bubbles are Runeterra's symbol for the Mystic element, seen in Elementalist Lux: Mystic and base Lulu. The Mystic element is tied to the spirit realm, other worlds/dimensions, the unknown, dreams, and imagination. Pix himself is some sort of butterfly creature, and he's the one that stared Lulu's descent into... well, Lulu.
  • There's a WPK/BNK file in League called "TEST_HOOKUP" that is used to store some data in between champion releases and upon comparison there were some new sound effects added, including some bubble popping sounds, what sounds like a giant magical explosion following an approx. one-sec windup, and various 'ding' sounds, as if something is bouncing away. Will upload once I get an extraction going after work.
  • There probably isn't going to be a new 'sleep' crowd control added since that would require new 'sleeping' animations for all the champions, but there might be some kind of dream or sleep-related ability.
  • "Hold on to your summoner spells" might hint at a possible ability to steal or copy someone else's summoner spells

So recently we've gotten Tahm Kench, a greed spirit, Evelynn, a lust/pain spirit, Aatrox, a war spirit, and Kayn/Rhaast, a violence spirit.

Perhaps this is a dream/imagination spirit?

"Female Burst Mage". I don't think their gender is mentioned anywhere in this teaser :P I think it'd actually be much better for this champ to be male-coded if not just explicitly male. Aside from Taric and certain skins we don't really have a more aesthetically "cutesy" and/or "feminine" male champ while we have something of an overabundance of female champs that are "dreamy" and/or "loopy"(Lux, Lulu, Jinx, Soraka, Janna, etc.). I think it'd be a nice change of pace?

Maybe the new champ will be able to create bubbles and then redirect their attacks with said bubbles? http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/503/906/215.gif

Ok, first of all, I adore your writing style and this post was very well put together! Aside from that, an idea regarding the quote about "interesting angles" sprung to mind.

Ok so, I can't remember for what champion it was designated, but during said champs development, the Riot team toyed with the idea of having skillshots that were shot from a portal that the champion could deploy (think lulu placing Pix on a minion behind someone and shooting her glitter lance from it in a single ability). Furthermore, this new champ seems to have some sort of connection to bubbles which made me believe that this concept of creating portals (or bubbles in her case) that shoot projectiles from all sorts of different places fit her perfectly. Or even better, if the new champion could spawn 2 bubbles that would work as portal, and shooting threw them would teleport the projectile and invert the angle.

Anyways, it a pretty interesting idea and I thought that it would be worth mentioning at least. Can't wait for the release*[slayer-pantheon-popcorn]*

Hope the new champ is from Mount Targon. We need more champs for that region

I'm guessing that they will be similar in theme to Lulu, but without the slightly evil overtones. Probably a human since a yordle would be a little too close to Lulu, although they are pretty bubbly, so it wouldn't be surprised.

What about the word 'redirect'? It would be super cool for there to be an ability that could redirect abilities.

I have two theories, one just now inspired by you:

My first theory was that this champion would be affiliated with the Glade, where Lulu spent her "youth". The promise of whimsy, as well as bubble and butterflies, just made think of Pix. Fae also makes me think of walking through realms like a human would walk across the land, and portals would satisfy the "interesting angles" hint. Since I didn't think the hint referred to mobility (already have Bard Portals, Aurelion and Lissandra) - I thought of conjuring magic from portals, and that this mage would have, in essence, reverse skill shots. Similar to Bard, Poppy and Vayne in their need to position around walls - perhaps this mage can open a portal on the wall behind you and shoot a jet of bubble at your back!

Now that you mention spirits and the sleep hint, that I previously hadn't noticed, I am reminded of my own custom champion - Po, the Dreamweaver. I designed him to be akin to Bard, in the cosmic spirit sense, but as the controller of dreams. The innate ability on this champion would satisfy the "interesting angles" hint, too: Lucid Dream: Po becomes a Wisp while dead, still capable of moving and granting vision, and will respawn at the Wisp's current location when the death timer ends (the wisp would be visible to enemies). Similar to Leoric from Heroes of the Storm, this would enable this mage to perform completely unique ganks - and then emerging from death ready to burst an enemy down. (In this state they're xp would have to be locked, to be fair.) He has other abilities that interact with this, such as Dreamcatchers that restore health (even while dead, to speed up his revive); and his ultimate is a reverse Test-of-Spirit that knocks the spirit ("dreamer" away from the body, leaving it vulnerable to damage while the enemy player much return to their body. Po was designed as a support, though, albeit one that would function as a solo-laner - but he doesn't have kill potential.

Based on the Sandman, utilising "bubbles" would be an interesting parody.

She might be from Targon and be some kind of spirit.

Hmm, light bubbly bust mage, wonder where we've seen that before... Lux

Korvus Klaw10/18/2017, 10:04:39 AM1 votes

MaidensKnight10/18/2017, 5:15:02 PM1 votes

Since the most recent champions been from ionia, zaun and the freljord. I think that this new champion might be from shurima or the void.

Aσtsuke10/18/2017, 5:27:41 PM1 votes

I hope it'll be Caesar Zeppeli.

Rebel Fox10/18/2017, 5:30:09 PM1 votes

My thought on the new champion is that they are a kind of mage that heavily relies on the combos of their abilities. Anyone who has played Dota 2 knows about Invoker, one of the highest skill cap hero's in that game. I believe that the new champion is a mid lane Yordle mage who combos are perhaps more tied together than other combo mages (Brand, Ryze, ect).

MaidensKnight10/18/2017, 6:56:00 PM1 votes

I feel like this champ has some sort of connection to ryzeRyze. Ryze often talks about preventing some sort of cataclysm from happening while this new champion will bring "cataclysmic change".

0Jenny010/18/2017, 7:04:45 PM1 votes

OOOOOOOOOOO YEAHH hoping it might be a yordle, but probably not anyways WOOOHOHOHOH ANOTHER CHAMP! DAMNN These new champs are coming out like crazy I LIKE LOVE IT

Fairyfleur10/18/2017, 9:52:44 PM1 votes

She reminds me a lot of Elementalist Lux's mystic form, and Caitlin; an Elite Four member in Unova. https://i.gyazo.com/6d9f31294772c5aa740ba1452bb6a353.png

Caitlin's room has a bed with very beautiful and light drapery, and her signature Pokemon feeds off of dreams. I wonder if she inspired any of whoever the new champ's design is!

Nintendo 3DS10/18/2017, 10:35:20 PM1 votes

Just some ideas to simply enforce what has been said before : maybe she hates Lux, because new champs use illusions and dreams (so her ingame spells would be influenced by that) and thus rely on what can't be seen to twist the reality; Lux using light, this would give her the possibily to reveal what is true and what exist : countering her illusions. (light could also shatter said illusion)

Maybe she just hates mages in general, because their arcane magic can naturally counter her use of dreamy, inexisting, unseen powers.

So i thought, maybe a champion who can use illusions ? To change the vision of one player (think Nocturne ult). Hence the "old on your summoner spells" she could change the summoners spell, just reshape the whole VISUAL reality of a player. Maybe that's where the "don't fall asleep" come from, she would just put her ennemies in a dream. So i don't think its a new crowd control either.

Anyway, just speculation!

I thought she was gonna be a fairy or from the glave but i like your dream spirit idea much more
