POLL: Harrowing Event

I figured I'd put this up, good or bad. How do you feel about the changes they're making for the Harrowing event this year and in the future?

Personally I don't like it. I've waited three years in the hopes of seeing a fun Harrowing event on Summoner's Rift and we were told last year we'd get that once the new map was done. Well its done and we're being told that we'll get story but no event. Whats worse is they may spring it upon us at any time under the pretense of "Harrowing happening at any time of the year."

I can't deny that Harrowing can happen at any time of the year and I also understand their feelings of time constraints, but I think what matters more is what we as consumers, members and players think of this decision. I'm not interested in this years Harrowing skins and while its for a particular niche I was really banking on the Harrowing event to even things out and make it great. I was really looking forward to it. Now? Well, its disappointing to say the least.

So everyone, please respectfully give your opinion. Happy Harrowing. Kalista

I believe Ant in Oz said that the Harrowing can occur at anytime in Runeterra and its not particularly tied to any season. Although the Harrowing started as Halloween celebration, it has evolved since the early days and is more tied to lore than the real world Halloween. Thus I dont think that they have to release a Harrowing event during Halloween. I also think that this gives the writer and content creators more freedom to work their magic.

I want to clarify a point: The SR update was never framed as groundwork to make map skins possible.

Given the amount of work that went into making the new Summoner's Rift, and the gameplay considerations that it carries, is somewhat naive to expect seasonal skins (they could happen, but given the amount of resources required to make it, should not be assumed).

I also want to talk a little about aligning Harrowing with Halloween. While very important in America, Halloween is not observed with the same enthusiasm in most other parts of the world.

Since LoL has a worldwide audience, with consumers on multiple countries and regions, arresting creative and technical resources each year just to meet a very localized holiday deadline is probably the best course of action.

The problem is that a harrowing event every year eats away the resources and that means other places are gonna get less focus, while the shadow isles would start to get more and more lore.

Yeah but folks want to by Harrowing like skins in October, and Snowdown like Skins in the winter season.

You gotta understand, RIOT doesn't have much time for anything else besides skins.

The Harrowing was always just Runeterran Halloween to me, and including the Shadow Isles seemed like a way to just bundle up the spooky things together so it got a bit of attention. Then last year happened and the Harrowing got fleshed out in to an actual event that occurs in the lore.

My thoughts are essentially this:

  • If they wanna make Halloween skins for Halloween then I'm all for that because it means we get proper halloween celebrations with silly skins and the like.
  • If the Harrowing can occur at any time then I'm ok with that because then the Shadow Isles can have some time in the spotlight.
  • It seems like now, Shadow Isles themed skins like Underworld and Haunted skins can be released at any time, which I'm ok with.
  • This feels like they could do both Shadow Isles and Halloween themed events, with a more serious death focus for the former and more silly costume and revelry for the latter. I could see a Shadow Isles themed and Halloween style Summoner's Rift.

The way I see it, the Harrowing had basically no lore until last year, and if any lore was embellished on the Harrowing it was Shadow Isles related simply because of similar themes. The separation is good in my eyes because it allows for greater focus in both areas to the degree which they deserve.

Overall this has been a really disappointing end of the season. Controversial Harrowing skins and no event (though apparently we're promised story). Very disappointing.

It looks as if we FINALLY got something for Harrowing. I'm still thoroughly disappointed though.
