Garen is a culprit of being a lore breaking champion.

I come from an anti magic organization, but I summon a giant fucking sword from the sky to smite you down and also Silence you with my sword. Makes sense I guess.

the silence is explained in the lore. his sword is made of pretricite, which is a magic repelling material.

his ult is not represented in the lore. but so far, the lore only covers his early life.

lux is still hiding her powers and garen doesnt aknowledge them yet, even though he kindof knows whats going on. in their shared story where they fought nocturnes creations, garen seemed to immediately know what was going on when he saw the flash of light in the distance.

i think shes supposed to eventually reveal her powers and openly fight for demacia as a mage.

this will of course create some internal struggle for garen, who only saw magic as a destructive force in the world, and is then confronted with the fact of magic being used responsibly and for the good of demacia by his sister. this will probably have a large impact on his character, how he views magic, and demacia as a whole. he might eventually end up discovering , accepting, and using his own powers by the help of lux.

in the current universe lore, he also didnt meet katarina yet, even though we already know how that meeting turns out.

i dont think riot retconned this part of their lore, but theyre trying to flesh it out by starting over at the beginning of their stories.

Well, RiotJaredan specifically said over a year ago that the game does not fully represent the lore character. And while the silencing sword makes complete sense, there were no plans as of yet to give him a summoning holy sword power.

But that was a year ago, and things might change. Perhaps he will be reworked to have a more thematic ult. Perhaps he will develop into realizing he has magic powers himself.

Personally hope for the former, but I think the later is more likely.

Not all abilities are magic even if they look like it sometimes, Garen's ultimate specific looks like an offensive holy attack but it doesnt have to be magic. Take Naruto for example a lot of Taijutsu/Ninjutsu abilities look like they use Genjutsu chakra but they aren't Genjutsu at all.

its anti-mage not anti-magic so the sword could be magical.....

Well so far he hasn't shown these abilities inside the lore and honestly I think that it is possible that his lore will eventually reveal that he has magic powers himself and how he'll have to deal with that.

Little do you know, Demacia has giant cannons built into their mountains that fire giant swords into low orbit, and when they come back around they heat up in a brilliant flash upon reentry. Garen's not using magic, he's using the most advanced technology Runeterra has ever seen.

Also there is the possibility this will be covered in future stories within Demacia, as magic appears to be hereditary and it's very possible that, in the lore, Garen has yet to actualize his magical potential.

demacians are more anti magic user than anti magic item. their wall are magic so that they are able to be anti magic. they believe in a hierarchy where blood determines your position, only reason they stand lux is because her family is high ranking.

  1. Lore doesn't equal to gameplay. e.g. Malphite is as big as Teemo but that makes no sense.

  2. I don't remember where, but somewhere in the lore someone said something along the lines of: You don't realise you win all these wars because of something magical. [I really can't remember where it was said, but it was hinting at Garen having magical abilities.]

  3. It would make sense to give him magical abilites, I mean his sister has magic too.
