If you don't mind me asking, do you know if we're we ever going to get an Updated map of Runeterra? Ezreal wants to explore more.

And by Ezreal I mean me :3

Unlikely that there'll be just a plain ol', all in one, just-the-facts-ma'am, style world map in the near future. ######But if players use the more cultural artifact style maps, like the Medarda Heirloom, to piece together information - I can't stop them.

Speaking of Ezreal. Whoever thought to put Piltover right next to Noxus and Shurima was kinda brilliant, makes his character make a lot of sense in that context.

Interesting that Noxus is actually like their primary customer

Sharjo5 votes

I mean Noxus is pretty much the biggest empire on Runeterra currently, so getting in good with them makes a lot of sense for an independent state.

EROTIC RAID BOSS3 votes

it does. It's also not what people used to expect who saw piltover as 'good' and probably allied with demacia.

Are you checking out the map closely rn? It actually gives you a pretty good idea of where every major region is located, with a bit of guesswork for targon

Sharjo2 votes

I am, and right now I'm wondering particularly about Krexor, both for the Minotaur connections and for the apparent lack of Noxian control there and Kumungra, because if that's anything to go by I'm wondering about the potential Kumungu lore for the future.

Honestly this map is such a great window in to not only geography but culture and the politics/trade of Valoran and the Southern Continent. It's really interesting to examine. So much so I'm neglecting reading Progress Day until I've got my fill of the map.

MavenSong2 votes

Progress day is quite good, id highly make sure you read it asap. Many interesting tidbits and such.

Sharjo1 votes

Just finished it and yeah, definetly interesting. I'm intrigued at the possibilities that culd emerge from it, though I can't say I don't expect Camille and Caitlyn to be lackadaisical in remedying the situation; they're smart women. They'll figure it.

Hopefully.

Wheatloaf1 votes

IIRC we've got Jhin on his way to Piltover as well, for... something.

MavenSong1 votes

Jhin, Noxus, and Zaun, OH MY!

I'm thinking a more full map might look something like this: http://imgur.com/a/8W2nv

Obviously with the landmasses made up, but the general locations I feel like have to be pretty accurate. Taliyah went from Ionia in the northeast, to Freljord, to cross noxus into Shurima, that tells me the Freljord has to be north of noxus but inaccessible by sea that way, not West.

This is pretty much just in my head but I think Icathia could be on the edge of Shurima near Kumungra, where a jungle seems likely (Kumundu jungle or whatever it used to be called). It would explain why void creatures like Kha'zix are in a jungle area and not the desert with Rek'sai

Thorgram3 votes

Are these maps still canon ?

Freljord Blackmist

Are there others maps i've missed ?

Star Guardían1 votes

Yes, everything after the Freljord update in 2014 is still canon.

LostFr0st6 votes

It's so beautiful item 3070 It even has little corrections and notes and the places Noxus invaded Shurima... so much to go through... Tell the team it's awesome please.

Why is there some Shuriman crests on some city? Was there some united shuriman government before Azir's return? I thought that all cities parts of the old shuriman empire before the collapse currently are just some independent city-states that should have no crest at like Glorft or Aurma.

Oh well, since you asked so nicely.

Well, Kalamanda is part of SHURIMA.

In other news, Noxus is taking control of lands of Shurima.

... and Minotaurs are alive?

A Superb Villain3 votes

Augments are chic now.

Viktor ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

MavenSong2 votes

Now ?

A Superb Villain3 votes

Way back when, augments were the curious invention of an unstable inventor who made a fuss in Zaun and was laughed out of the College of Techmaturgy.

Now, members of well-to-do social circles are gluing metal plates to their face and dressing up gauntlets with glowing fungus.

Scoroct2 votes

This actually is really cool idea, if Viktor is like the underappreciated father of augments that are now pervasive throughout Piltover and Zaun.

Sitting on the rim of a marble fountain is a woman wearing the loosely tied jacket of a Piltover sheriff, a customized cap pulled low over her shadowed features. One leg is cocked at an angle, her elbow resting atop it as her gaze sweeps the throng of apprenta. There’s a long-barreled rifle over her shoulder, one with what looks like a gleaming gemstone enclosed in a lattice of silver wire.

So just me or does this sound like a certain sheriff is getting a visual update?

TyrekGoldenspear2 votes

Woo! Sharjo giving us the updates on these juicy lore updates!

SecondComing2 votes

So, Piltover and Bilgewater surrounded by Noxus and its territories, lol. That's interesting, to say the least.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Curious as to why Noxus hasn't invaded Piltover, but might be on good terms with Zaun.

Curious as to why Noxus hasn't invaded Piltover, but might be on good terms with Zaun.

Cause the place is heavily defended, plus their plan is not to outright conquer the place like they do with the smaller less important cities, their plan is to preserve as much of the city as possible while taking control of it for their own benefit.

CriticalTroll2 votes

So i looked on the map and it looks amazing really well done Riot guys and gals. One question tough, what the fuck is that thing between Ironwater and Bilgewater? Is that Illaoi's god? That thing is creepy af.

RiotHexadriven2 votes

I don't think sailors plan to find out...that trade route skirts gingerly close to the coasts...

GreenLore1 votes

Oh my,the noxian empire is freaking EVERYWHERE O_o

Sharjo2 votes

Not in Glorft, Nashramae, Kalamanda, Stonewall, Kumangra, Mudtown, Noldrum or Krexor!

Thorgram1 votes

GG WP Rioters ! [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

So is anyone proficient in Antique seafaring maps ? :D

Is the compass relative or absolute ? Because i find it a bit weird that the way to Freljord is west. I've always pictured Freljord as the northernmost country. Any thoughts ?

RiotBioluminescence7 votes

Ships don't fly like crows.

(Was that cryptic enough sounding? I felt like being a little cryptic, but not too much, I hope.)

Robertsmash2 votes

The Freljord is north, but ships have to take a path over water? Probably some open ocean to the west that lets them go north.

K0SMOS1 votes

Your cryptic tongue does not fool me [slayer-jinx-wink]

Warlord Dienekes2 votes

Well, I can only use medieval sources I'm familiar with as context. But, there, ship maps are more for showing the rough way to follow tides to reach places. Things look warped particularly to the modern eye.

That said, most of those either don't have a compass at all, or if they do what is supposed to be north is roughly north of the central point of the map. It just might be strangely too far west or east because the map maker emphasizes different sections of the path through the water.

So, going by that. Freljord is West, it just is probably not as directly west as it looks.

Also, the tech in Runeterra is far and away beyond anything in the medieval world, so, there maps should probably be a bit more accurate.

This would be a terrible map for actual navigation. No latitude markings and the Rhumb lines don't connect.

This is less of a trade map that you would bring on a voyage and more of a big-picture planning map used in the office. For example, Medarda would see which routes to take on a voyage that would yield him the best profits during current conditions, based on their relative location and approximate travel time. He might make note of changes, things that aren't sold anymore, etc.

DarkRitual1 votes

And the Noxian overtaking of Shriman lands, which is notable on one of the Southern listed locations.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Any summary on what's new about this map?

Sharjo1 votes

Several states are controlled by Noxus, Kalamanda's a part of Shurima, there are several independent states beyond Piltover and Zaun.

StarrLord1 votes

Do you have I copy of the map but without the papers on the top left? It really messes with my map tracing if part of the map is just gone. Swain

Tesla Effect1 votes

I love the little added detail of what trade goods can be found where, what rulers are in the city, and what nation is ruling there. Those little touches mean a lot when you are creating a world.
