The Rift Herald was a Scuttle Crab herself once, a long time ago. A hero amongst her people, her bravery is what allows the Rift to exist today... It is a harrowing tale, of two love-struck Scuttle Crabs who spent their days in harmony, eating honeyfruit and doing Scuttle Crab things. In these days, the Rift was a peaceful place, not yet spoiled by the endless ravages of war.

But then everything changed when the Xer'sai attacked. From a Void portal deep within the earth, they came in numbers beyond counting, ready to consume all before them until Runeterra itself collapsed into the Void forever. Only the scuttle crabs had the power to defeat this menace. Though their numbers were meagre, their ability to juke skillshots was unparalled, and using this ancient art, they fought back against the tide of Void beasts, driving them to the brink of the portal from which they came. But when victory was nigh, a shape was seen in the darkness. Rek'sai herself, the queen of the Xer'sai loomed out of the Void, ready to crush the Scuttle Crabs before her. She did not use mana, so the Crabs would never be able to juke her into going OOM. All seemed lost.

But one Scuttle Crab had the bravery to do what needed to be done. Antenna held high, she hurled herself at the great Void beast, and with furious energy tore out Rek'Sai's eyes. Crippled, the monster roared and thrashed, falling back into the abyss of the Void, dragging the remaining Xer'Sai with it. The portal closed. The world was saved. But victory came at a terrible cost.

For that heroic Scuttle Crab, clinging to Rek'sai's bloodied crown, is trapped in the Void. It is a fate most consider worse than death, for the Void is a place of many horrors that the mortal mind can not comprehend. To this day the surviving Scuttle Crabs mourn in silence, endless patrolling the river where their greatest hero sacrificed herself to save Runeterra.

But in the Void, the crab survived. Floating in the eldritch darkness, fighting for life with every hour, the Scuttle Hero grew stronger. Though her body has changed, her spirit is stronger than ever, and she never forgot her people. It is Scuttle's love that allows her to survive in the Void, for the beasts that dwell there do not understand a force of such purity. Driven by her dreams of reunion with her kind, and of the honeyfruit that await her, she has returned to the Rift, to find that her the Scuttle Crabs have not forgotten her either...
