Mostly because the protagonist literally being a smart but weak kid that sits behind a computer all day yet still somehow builds up a harem of girls who all love him and he saves the world via plot-induced victory (read, bullshit like continuing to live after hitting 0hp even though literally everyone else died immediately after hitting that point).

In other words, look up Mary Sue, Kirito fills the role. Now granted, from what I know of the novels (Haven't watched the anime, I helped translate some of the novels though) he's made rather different and much more unique.

But the fanbase is relatively tame, there's been far more jokes about how hostile the fanbase is compared to how many times the fanbase has actually been all that hostile. For example, pics showing Guts cutting Kirito in half and saying to make way for the "real" Black Swordsman (despite Guts not being the first to have the title but whatever)- when I seldom saw any pics showing off how Kirito was supposed to be stealing his thunder.

Personally, the worst fanbases I've personally encountered are One Piece, Dragonball Z, and RWBY. Not saying that ARE the worst fanbases, but by far my experiences with them have been the most negative. You want a cool fanbase? Check out any non-mainstream anime- like Beelzebub. Those fans are chill.

SAO doesn't have the worst fanbase it has the worst haters in my opinion. The anime is not some master piece but got does haters get super annoying sometimes

lmao did I really get down voted? I didnt even defend SOA, literally asked a question because I'm not involved heavily in anime and have like 2 friends who also watch anime. Also not saying you are the one who down voted, just noting it.

Ya I noticed that, girls literally love him for no reason. No reason at all. That's part of why I stopped watching it too I think, it just got pretty old. All of it was getting kinda old by the 2nd arc imo, but that's just my opinion. Im pretty picky about the animes I watch in full.

Dragon Ball Z fanbase made me honestly hate anime growing up. It was only the really fuckin weird kids who were into in my school so I avoided it like the plague. And I'm pretty fuckin' weird myself so if someone is too weird for me, they're fuckin' weird.

(A) You already had at least one downvote and mob mentality is strong. (B) You didn't straight-up hate on it and questioning why it's bad leads some to jump-the-gun and assume you like it.

I mean, he technically does save the lives of the ones he meets in-game, so they do have a reason; it's the cousin that comes out of nowhere and what really started tipping people over the hate-edge.

But yeah, it's not worth the hate it gets. It's honestly not all that bland and the art/animation/music was rather nice at times.
