If you think about it, it makes sense, the Varus story mentioned him going to Shurima and finding the warding sigils meant to trap Darkin around a snake-headed statue. This could be a good opportunity to explain the nature of the curse that transformed Cassio since a snake statue was also mentioned in that story.
It may be a coincidence but it's an interesting link that may or may not be relevant.
I would've figured that the snake-headed statue depicted an Ascended individual, and would've been more related to that stone statue that transformed Cassiopeia by way of "Hey we designed these architectural wonders after this Ascended fellow" rather than by way of powers.
On a side note I'm hoping that this darkin lass gets a hold of an Ascended body. I wanna see what she'd be able to do with that kind of flesh, providing the whole Sun Disc magic stuff doesn't interfere with things.
No, they are likely going to make a team of darkins. We still need mid and support to complete. Cassiopeia looks like a snake, not like the other darkins at all.
It's not an impossible theory, but unlikely. Riot is likely going to milk this darkin lore for whatever the last 2 champs are worth.

The Serpent-Headed God statue guards the entrance to the Tomb of Emperors, the tomb Sivir's Chalicar is the key too. The wards are there to fend of anyone trying to enter I'm sure. Renekton and Xerath were trapped inside at the time Cassiopeia was cursed by the statue possibly for spilling the blood of a descendant of the Shuriman royal lineage. This of course let the two Ascended out of the tomb, but as to where the Darkin artifact went is up in the air.
