I know this is late but I decided to look at the Freljord stuff on Universe and I saw Ashe but what happened to the old lore married to Tryndamere stuff?
And what direction is Riot going to take on the Freljord?
I think it is most likely that Ashe and Tryndamere are not married yet,but they will eventually marry within the story.
It's highly possible that this might still be canon, though Lore-team might be willing to bring us an Ashe-Trynda relationship before the marriage.
I mean, she was named after Riot Tryndanmere's wife, so probably.

its from the "old" lore and that lore is retconned for the time being.but according to Riot those part of the lore still CAN be cannon so no way to say for sure until we get a Freljord update. but for the time being they are not.

Ashe and Tryndamere are either married, dating, or best buds, according to the new Trynd lore out on the PBE: "Fueled by unbridled fury and rage, Tryndamere once carved his way through the Freljord, openly challenging the greatest warriors of the north to prepare himself for even darker days ahead. The wrathful barbarian has long sought revenge for the annihilation of his clan, though more recently he has found companionship with Ashe, the Avarosan warmother, and a home with her people. His almost inhuman strength and fortitude is legendary, and has delivered him and his new allies countless victories against the greatest of odds."

And what direction is Riot going to take on the Freljord?
Keep in mind I'm no rioter, but here's my take on the Freljord as it stands:
The Freljord is a land of myth, legend and mysticism, a harsh place of cold and ice. Most of the lore of the more recent champs (say, Ornn or Braum) speaks of them as if they're just stories that just MIGHT be true. They have that strange both-true-and-not-true quality that a lot of old myths have (King Arthur for example) where they CAN be real, but can also be metaphors. What's strange about the Freljord is that while yes, you have champs like Ornn, Anivia, Braum and Volibear that feel like mythological stories told to inspire/frighten small children, you also have champs like Ashe, Sejuani, Olaf and Tryndamere that feel ground-level, like they're real people you're meant to be personally invested in. For these champs, Riot seems to be moving in a more destined hero direction (since Ash and Sejuani are the descendants of Lissandra's two sisters). Ornn and Braum have bios that are basically a long list of stories attached to them, stories that may or may not have actually happened. Even Olaf's story is about how he's been "cursed" by the bones to live a long life with a peaceful death.
But IMO, the best way to look at the Freljord (or any region of Runeterra, honestly) is to compare it to the other regions of Runeterra and see what makes it unique. In particular, the Freljord is very easy to compare to Shurima.
Shurima is a land of myth and legend as well, but their myths aren't LITERAL myths (with a few notable exceptions like Rammus and Amumu). The Ascended were once beings as normal as Olympic athletes or Navy SEALs; incredible, sure, but not "start a religious cult around them" incredible. The champions of Shurima are largely composed of the old Shuriman empire's glory, returned to restore their land and to make it great again (Taliyah is the major exception here, though I have the feeling Stoneweaving's going to be more important than she gives it credit for). The Ascended are the old glories that have faded INTO myth and legend, now returning. You see this best in Bloodline, where Nasus IS a legendary hero with nigh unimaginable power to the regular plebians of Shurima, but to himself he's just a regular guy looking on the pale imitations of what came before.
With Shurima, the focus is on the Ascended and what THEY'RE going to do. Azir is going to war with Xerath to determine who will be the true Emperor of Shurima, and characters like Taliyah and Sivir are caught in the middle. With the Freljord, though, the focus is on what the descendants of the old legends are going to do. Ashe, Sejuani, Lissandra, Tryndamere, Olaf... they're all fighting one another to crown the queen of the Freljord, and in the background you see Volibear and Ornn wrestling for dominance.
