His old lore was generic as f*ck. Man loses wife and child and goes on a spree of vengeance (but this time a demon possesses him too!). Now it's at the very least more interesting. Seriously, someone explain to me how they can get so attached to something so lifeless and lazy as old Varus?
Varus was a man of honor that chose his sworn duty over his people.
The old lore gave a sense that Varus was the person wielding the bow not the bow itself.
The thing i disagree with the MOST is that after unleashing the "corruption" upon himself he was still "in control"
Varus turning out to have the darkin bow gave us the middle ground of a darkin maintaining a mutual relationship with it's host.
Valmar and Kai perfectly portray everthing old Varus had characterized, the Darkin now known as Varus represents the revenge and hatred aspect of old Varus.
Honestly the core of what made old Varus is still there, its just tweeked up a bit to give more depth to the characterization and character growth. Honestly the biggest difference is the introduction of the three-soul amalgamation thing, and even that can be justified since Runeterra is already familiar with the aspect of an amalgam existence (heck half of the Shadow Isles champions have more than one soul in their bodies, not including the Aspects of Targon which greatly compare to the current Darkin.)
Fandoms are a powerful thing and people develop an attachment to their favorite characters. Varus's lore did change him quite alot, so it's understandable why all of the Varus mains and people who loved him might have been upset over the changes. Old Varus wasn't boring or lifeless, he just had a different approach to essentially the same theme and story (Village gets invaded and lover gets killed, in order to get revenge he allows himself to become corrupted). You have to realize though that it's the little details that shape a character. I personally enjoyed both his old and new lore, though I completely understand why many are against the new one.
Also I've noticed how both sides of the argument seem to enjoy undermining each other's preferred lore, saying things like "the old lore was lifeless, man's family dies and now he seeks revenge, how generic," versus "the new lore is so dull, two gay lovers get taken over by a darkin, the old lore was better." Those that liked the old lore better think the new one is more dull, while those who like the newer better think the old one was dull. It's clear that everyone sees shit differently.

In his new lore the entire depth of his character is "He's beautiful, likes to torture people and went on a quest for vengeance after being arrested for war crimes (or something). Also his new body is made up of gay men...AND THEY WANT IT BACK!!!!"
