Wukong is still Wukong and he's color text is the best for character imo. Plus from him we learn that Noxus still used Chem bombs (Hey Riven, your backstory is still canon) and that his staff is made by Doran, so he's still canon.

What confuses me is why Ionia has the moon aspect. Isn't Diana the moon aspect?

Sharjo10 votes

She is, but who's to say what plans the Aspect has in store for Diana?

Ralanr1 votes

What plans Diana has for Diana? Or do you mean the moon celestial?

Sharjo6 votes

I mean the Targonian Aspect. Sorry, naming conventions are confusing.

Papa Andrei12 votes

Diana == Moon Aspect. Unlike Pantheon whose host gets entirely mind wiped, Moon Aspect (we need a name) just sorta inhabits/gifts the body with powers and guidance.

More than likely its just saying Diana is now in Ionia for one reason or another.

I must say I really like the new bios and stories. They keep nearly everything about the original stories intact, but update them with more implications about the world as a whole.

Ahri: Love how they kept the theme of an inhuman struggling with humanity, though actually give a little more depth then just "seductress demon who turned out totally good after feeling guilty". She still has fangs that she uses, but she uses them with an actual purpose now. Rengar: Really great improvement over just being some random stray cat person that some nameless dude adopted. If anything, I think his backstory might directly parallel with Kha'Zix's; both started their life on Runeterra as weak, feeble creatures, but over time through hunting in the harsh wilderness they became apex predators. Makes their rivalry all the more intense since they're basically reflections of each other. I think there was typo though in which the backstory referred to Kha'Zix as the "wily beast beast", unless "beast beast" is some way his tribe calls strong prey (doubt it though). Also, although the story hammers in the experience of being hunted by Rengar really well, I don't know why that kid in the tent was a thing. The kid was quickly forgotten about and was entirely useless, not even serving as the point of motivation for Rengar to kill the beast. I feel it was just added to try to artificially create sentimental value rather than actually being an integral part of the narrative. Nami: So glad they finally just confirmed the Marai and the Lunari work in tandem, and I'm also wondering if the abyss has anything to do with the Void (it's constantly described as a hungry darkness, its has proximity to Targon which is another point where the Voidborn are coming through, and we have Kog'Maw whose epithet is still "the Mouth of the Abyss"). It also makes me wonder why the Aspect of the Moon needs the abyssal pearl. If both sides truly wanted to stop the encroaching darkness you'd think the Lunari would just give the Marai a Moonstone every now and then, but there's a specific trade that has to be there for more than just monetary value. An intriguing dynamic I hope will be expounded upon sooner or later. Anyway, I absolutely fell in love with Nami's personality when she was talking to the villagers in the short story. It's endearing without going over the top, and actually kind of makes me want to play her just to listen to her voiceover again. MonkeyKing: Probably my favorite of the vastayan updates so far. I love that we actually see how Wukong and Yi are best bros, as well as the development of Wukong's fighting style. The story really accentuated Wukong's personality through the short story; great job on the writer's part on retaining our bold, mischievous, self-confident, and silly Monkey King. "The Wacky Adventures of Yi and Kong" needs to be a serial one day.

“Friend, of cour–” “–HERETIC!” the elder shouted. “–Fiend! I said fiend! You misheard me!”

This thing was great.

I wonder if the darkness in Nami's lore might have some connection to Naut, since in his (old, unupdated) lore he is pulled into a strange inky darkness in the sea and changed.

Also a link to the new Vastaya species page, which serves a similar role to what the region pages do:

Now I need rhinobears.

Also, the Makara- from the description- and Raylu- being the other Sea Tribe to the Marai- sound interesting, personally. :o

Also rhinobears.

Sharjo4 votes

Just as a note; there's more vastaya tribes than that list shows. One such tribe was mentioned in the Xayah/Rakan stories: the Juloah.

Godspeed Sharjo.

Moonboy654 votes

how are Ahri and Wukong related, i checked both their bio and color stories and none mention eachother

Sharjo8 votes

That connections been there for a while; not a new addition. Guess we'll see where that goes in the future.

Moonboy651 votes

I know, i wanna know how they are related in the first place

But fast and dumb is so much more fun!

Popstar Ahri3 votes

I dispise the new lore for Ahri

Sharjo9 votes

Why's that?

Papa Andrei2 votes

Good to know Doran and Riven are still canon lore pieces! Though am curious, is the Makara going to be Fizz's tribe now? (Can't recall if they have a name)

Sharjo10 votes

The Makara are (as far as I remember) mostly crustacean vastaya, so no.

And just to clear the waters; Fizz isn't a vastaya. If a champion wasn't updated here, they aren't vastaya.

Legacy Hydralpha1 votes

Isn't Fizz considered a yordle? Seems far-fetched but I think I heard it somewhere.

Sharjo8 votes

Fizz's people have never been named. A long time ago Rioters suggested that there was evidence Fizz had genetic connections to yordles, but nothing concrete, and that was very old lore.

I know Riot knows what he is, but as to what's player facing, Fizz's race remains unnamed and vanished.

Yeah, good thing Riven's still canon...

Jax does have an updated story though. Aparently he's from Icathia.

NineTailedMystic2 votes

Oh, I am pissed.

Sharjo10 votes

Why's that?

Lanceworks3 votes

Judging by his name, I'm guessing it has something to do with Ahri

Sharjo9 votes

Well they're gonna have to elaborate if we're to understand why they're pissed.

NineTailedMystic2 votes

It is about Ahri. I'll give you three guesses, and I promise you it's going to be the saddest, dumbest answer and I'll get made fun of for it.

Totally unrelated side note: There isn't a way to disable inbox notifications on the Boards for comments like Reddit, is there?

Sharjo3 votes

No there is not to the best of my knowledge.

My guess is that your grip is about her either being vastaya or having a prior relationship.

NineTailedMystic1 votes

Well, I am a bit miffed about the Vastayan thing since I liked how she originated from a fox, but that's not the end of the world. The other guess, well, if only you could see my Skype chat with a friend.

I'm a sad, sad, little man, I know.

Sharjo6 votes

Well considering my own fixations about Sona I'm not one to judge, hell I'm not one to judge period.

In the end all I can say that you've got better options than a vastayan woman who could very easily kill you by eating your memories. Like Janna! She's not so physical but she's still a kind, caring individual.

NineTailedMystic1 votes

Fox girls or bust. Part of why I'm so attached to Ahri is because of the severe lack of fox girls, especially in the west. Besides, I'd rather have Ahri as a lover and die to her, than to have never had her at all.

Edit: I'm also very surprised the writer did that at all, considering her fanbase...

Sharjo5 votes

Well Xayah's part fox; Lhotlan are like fox griffon people!

On the writing part; there aren't many better ways to teach someone the gravity of their actions than through the death of a loved one.

Chromatic Eagle5 votes

So the reason why you're upset is due to a fox fetish?

At least you're honest about it.

NineTailedMystic3 votes

Mm, most of the lore update for her was fine even if I am a little sad to see her old lore go, but the fact that she had a lover and can't get over him just depresses me. idk even know if I want to one trick her anymore.

Not on the narrative team, but it's possible that this is an important point in Ahri's life.

Taking responsibility for her pain is likely the first step to coming to terms with it and becoming someone with a deeper appreciation for life, for love, and the preciousness of every moment.

We've just seen her at one of her saddest moments, but I think it could make her a more beautiful, loving, person in the long run.

NineTailedMystic3 votes

So right now, we have 3 new pieces of lore for Ahri.

  • Her origins where it shows her more original character minus the "being a fox turned demi-human".

I'm fine with this, it mostly stays true to her old lore while explaining more. Although I'm a little upset that rather than wanting to take essence to become human, she does it because she's an addict. And rather than becoming human, she wants to become a civilized person.

  • The fortune teller who tells Ahri what these mysterious Sunstone pieces are while trying to thieve a tail off of her.

I like this one, it shows how she interacts with people and gives her a destination or end goal, as well as how she deals with adversity. Charming foes into submission, just like the Ahri we all know and love.

  • The Garden, where she tries to forcefully forget how she murdered her love.

This one has its good and bad to me. It seems so centralizing to her new character. While it does highlight the moral quandary she has between taking life essence or not, it's merely because she's addicted to the euphoric effects and power it gives her, rather than serving a purpose. My own personal problems aside, Ahri never felt like a character to take a lover in the first place. If anything, it always felt like she'd be one for lust over love. In fact, as Sharjo said that "...there aren't many better ways to teach someone the gravity of their actions than the death of a loved one", makes me feel as the writer only gave Ahri a former lover as there was no other character who could fulfill a similar role as she has/had no important friends or family.

I feel like this will just make Ahri into this generic "tragic, mopey heroine" archetype with how she deals with coping over the murder, rather than her original theme of the moral issues involved with taking life essence for her own machinations. If she ever gets a VO Update, I feel as if it's going to contain lines like "I can't forget him..." or how she's still in love with him which isn't what she was about.

Now on to the important part of this comment: What you say about how this event will affect Ahri and how it will shape her, sounds like a good thought, seems unresolved. I don't know if there will be future lore additions (Sharjo pls), but right now it seems like her main theme revolves around dealing with the trauma of murdering her lover, rather than the guilt of stealing essence in general which isn't Ahri imo. We also don't know when that event happened in relation to the lore's present time either.

Will we ever get to see her without the weight of the event on her shoulders? Will she ever be able to love another person again? (Don't give her a new lover either >_>). I would have been pretty happy with the lore update if that full story didn't happen and another champion got it.

Edit: After being talked to by a friend about this, he says that The Garden actually shows her accepting what she did which I feel that's what your comment is talking about a little more. Perhaps I didn't put away enough bias or I'm poor at analyzing literature but I personally don't see acceptance here. Maybe with how she chose to live and remember despite the pain, rather than die and forget.

Is the diagram link broken? Not working on my end, but it may be because I am on mobile.

Thanks for sharing this with us Sharjo :)

Sharjo8 votes

Hang on I'll fix it!

EDIT: Fixed!

Sraeg20131 votes

So... if shapeshifters aren't anyhow connected to Vastaya, why are they even on the diagram?

Sharjo6 votes

Shapeshifters aren't true vastayan like the tribes, but they have heritage tying them in. Their powers originate from the Vastayashai'rei, but they are still human. It's like a dilluted bloodline.

Sraeg20131 votes

Then... why not to just add an arrow pointing away from Vastaya?

How strong a bloodline is has no impact on connections in a family tree.

Sharjo10 votes

Well since the tree is a literal tree, a fallen blossom has its own visual implications, no?
