Pyke's Backstory

Something feels kinda off about Pyke's story. It says that he kills people on his ship ledger. Alright that's cool

But no one has ever heard of Pyke's ship, the Terror. Let's say that Bilgewater just has terrible recordkeeping then. But why does his ledger magically update to include anyone he encounters? If the people who worked on the Terror are still alive, how could there be no record of the ship? There are literally people who worked there.

Why does he think that random Demacians look familiar? Did Garen work on a whaling ship?

This leads me to the conclusion that the entire story is a fabrication by some evil deity. A deity that took a rando drowned sailor and fabricated this whole affair with parchment that randomly updates when it hears a name.

It's less of an issue of bad recordkeeping or anything like that, and more of rumors and hearsay. Pyke is as much a mass-murderer in Bilgewater as he is a ghost story. Nobody really knows what happened to Pyke, save Pyke himself - and the crewmen who watched him drown. ...Provided any of them still have a pulse.

You aren't necessarily too far off the mark. Pyke's ever-growing list is very clearly a case of manipulation and forced delusion. He's working for some unknown entity(entities?) that he refers to as "deep-folk" and the people of the Swimming City.

These entities seem to have some hunger for revenge on every living being above water, judging by a few of Pyke's quotes.

"I'm not the only one who wants revenge on everyone." "We took too much, I'm collecting the debt." "Not sure who's revenge I'm getting. Don't care."

So it's not quite that the list just randomly updates - it sure seems random, but, when you want absolutely everyone dead...Can it really be called "random"?

Something(s) or someone(s) are clearly distorting Pyke's perception so that they get to exact some revenge on the world above, and keep their bloody emissary gratified in the killing.

Well the power that brought him back to life and gave him powers also controlling him and Pyke himself isn't aware...So that's why in his short story he notices new names that he never had heard before and he still kills them...
