Let's talk about the big armored Demacian in the room

Well, Issue 3 of the Lux comic is out, and with it came a pretty interesting wham scene near the end. While fighting Sylas, a knock from Garen's sword gives him magic that he then uses to punch the daylights out of him.

It's absolutely wonderful and it's just what I personally wanted from their fight, but the interesting thing is: this scene only hints at, but does not reveal, the nature of whatever power Garen uses. All we have confirmed is that it's connected to Kayle's celestial magic. But is it in Garen's sword? Garen himself? Both? Something else?

As you can see on LordRedStone's general Issue 3 thread, (linked here: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/xcrR2bEH-spoilers-lux-issue-nr-3-feedback-discussion-and-questions) theorizing on that is the main topic of discussion. Some people want Garen to be magic, some people don't want it, some would rather have it be part of the petricite discoveries, and no one knows anything yet for sure.

So I thought it would be interesting to poll people's theories and desires for what'll be revealed about Garen down the line. Feel free to discuss below as well.

From Kayle's bio

Kayle fought in many battles, flying at the head of the growing militia and imbuing the weapons of the worthy with her own sanctified fire…

Kayle to Garen: "You seem worthy Garen. Now prove it."

I myself much prefer the idea that Garen's sword is one of the swords Kayle blessed back then. Thinking about it, the Crownguards are one of the most influential families in Demacia, so it wouldn't be that much of a stretch to assume they have one (or even several) of the swords. Garen being leader of the Dauntless Vanguard, it's also believable that one of those swords was entrusted to him.

I personally dislike the idea of Garen being a mage. He doesn't need that to grow and make him doubt Demacia's current situation and policy. It'd also be redundant with Lux if he tries to hide it, etc. I also think the part where Sylas tells Garen "You don't know do you...?" is about Lux. They were talking about Lux, it makes sense to me.

His dashing good looks and rugged charm, of course.

It's from Kayle.

Personally, I think making Garen a mage would drastically cheapen his eventual shift in ideology to understanding and not persecuting mages. Learning not to persecute others is a hard but ultimately beautiful shift in one’s mentality. Learning that you are that so they can’t be bad because you’re good just makes his shift caused by selfishness. And Garen should have many flaws, but selfish should not be one of them.

In game Demacian Justice, seems to be a magical type attack it even does magic damage (I get it was designed that way to make it a better execute skill), but I feel like Garen has some magic flowing through him, but (if he knows) refuses to use it or doesn't know and never though about it and just has a latent ability for it. Since he has little control maybe he can only go all or nothing with it. Maybe at the end of the comic he realizes this and uses Demacian Justice to save the day in the next volume or something. Hoping they give Garen a little bit more love, I know it's not his comic and people find his character boring, but he's the character that got me into the game and kept me playing til now so i'm a little bias for my boy.

Yeah as I said in another post, it's most likely just magic that was stored in Garen's sword. Garen is in no fear of battling mages head on as we've seen in the comic, and they were scared of the palace containing magic from centuries ago, so time isn't an issue. Of course it'd be..interesting? if it was magic Kayle shit but the most likely option is just leftover magic in his sword.

I mean lux has magic so why wouldn't garen?

I just love how Demacia's most elite soldier just dropped his guard and allowed himself to get bashed in the face with a magic blast like a god damned amateur. Also, for me, this comic has made me hate Lux even more. She has done so much damage to her homeland and her brother by helping Sylas even tho Garen allowed her to stay in demacia even tho he knows of her magic

I voted for it maybe being both, but I genuinely think it's just his equipment. Swain mentions it when he meets Garen too.

That giant sword slamming from the sky is magic? You gotta be pulling my leg.

i think some rioter metioned that garens ult comes from kayle. he channels the aspect of justice when he uses his ult, and i think thats the direction theyre taking, considering kayles interaction with him (garen is the only mortal she seems to even respect), and the similarity of the visuals of kayles and garens ultimates.

still id still vastly perfer the idea, that garens ult is not conventional magic, but a ki power like Shen sword or LeeSin abilities.

since he doesnt practise exotic martial arts, its much more unrefined, and almost like he uses his ki like a sledgehammer to bring down on his opponents.

but thematically it would just fit garen so well, since in most tropes ki powers are an expression of raw physical strength, and will and are attributed to martial characters. both of which garen has plenty as the most powerful fighter in demacia.

Riot could make a story where he exiles himself to find out the truth, while he's out on his journey to targon to visit Taric/ Kayle or whatever. He runs into a red-haired cutie that is having trouble against some powerful warlord and he jumps in to help her, unknowingly helping her assassinate the dude. Then the rest of the story writes itself pretty much.
