Do you think undeath has twisted a formerly human Hecarim beyond recognition or was he actually a centaur in life? It is not impossible that centaurs roamed Valoran in the distant past, now forgotten. What do you think?

Well you are pretty much asuming hecarim HAD life.
He was a centaur. They talked about this in his Q&A man, you know, the thing I posted about on his Skins/Trivia page on LoL wiki :PPPP
I always liked the idea that he was a mounted knight whose soul got twisted with his horse's due to the undead curse that is probably Morde's fault, but otherwise not really explained yet.
