I specifically love the fact that they are fighting the Navori Brotherhood, specifically
freedom fighters. It reminds me of that scene in Game of Thrones where Brienne is escorting Jaime Lannister through the Northern territories and comes across a scene where some of Rob Starks' men have raped and hung women for sleeping with Lannister soldiers. If you don't watch GoT the Northern Territories are fighting for their independence from the yoke of a southern kingdom and are typically portrayed as "good guys"
It gives off that vibe that I love so much about Ionia. That the oppressed eventually become oppressors. These men are supposed to be the "good guys" but their fight against perceived evil has made them just as dark as the monsters they fight against, reminding us that there is no such thing as good and evil in this world and we will only be measured by the strength of our will
