Questions on the Darkin Update

The timeline of Chalica?

  1. Brought from beyond the mountain and raised aloft at Shurima’s birth.
  2. Became weapon of Setaka
  3. Buried along with Setaka's dead body, by the Scholars Nasus
  4. Found by Myisha (Zoe)
  5. Used at The War of Sunborn (in story Twilight of the Gods)
  6. Handed to Idri-Mi along with Ta'anari heart, taking to weaponsmiths, hopefully will help in trapping the next Drakin by Myisha
  7. Sucessfully trapped a darkin (since champions like Kayn and Aatrox exist, I believe Myisha did success in merging a heart with a weapon)

1-6 is what we are hold from the story, 7 is what i guessed could happened after the story in Twilight of the Gods. These are obviously conflicting with what we have learned from Sivir's story on how she obtained the crossblade.

In the Year of a Thousand Storms, the lord of an ancient Shuriman city known as Nashramae hired Sivir to seek a unique cross-shaped blade he claimed was a lost heirloom. He sent his personal guards along with her to guarantee its retrieval, and after a search that lasted many months, Sivir finally located the weapon. She pried it from the sarcophagus of a long-forgotten hero buried beneath tons of collapsed rubble with a strange sense that her entire life had been leading up to this moment. The weapon shone with gold and emeralds, and though it was ancient, its edge was as sharp as if it had been forged that day.

Quoted from Sivir's bio, she found the crossblade in a heroic tomb (Setaka maybe). Then the timeline would look like this undoubtedly.

  1. The crossbalde somehow return to a tomb (the tomb of Setaka)
  2. Become Sivir's weapon
  3. Activate the rebirth of Shurima

Which would not gonna happen if Myisha had already recovered the crossblade and used it in darkin trapping. Chalica should either be a weapon held by Sivir, or be a weapon trapping a Darkin. It cannot be both in the same universe, the gaps between step 6 and step 7 seems too far to fill.

Syphax pushed her away. “The Chalicar,” he said. “It will play a part in Shurima’s rebirth?” “Yes,” said Ta’anari. “For good or ill. It will be a symbol for the people of Shurima to rally behind. I had hoped it could heal the wounds between us—a reminder of what we once were, and what we could be again. It could have saved us if we had taken the chance to reclaim the brotherhood that once bound us together under a single banner.”

Quoted from Twilight of the Gods again. To align with Sivir's bio, it seems the Chalica have to be returned to the tomb after Myisha's possession, with the attached heart removed too. From what we know so far, is weird.

The Double A in Darkin's names, Lore-wise

We all agreed on the double 'A' thing, Varus. The double 'A' thing!

Varus, 'V' 'A' 'R' 'U' 'S', your name should have an 'A' and then another 'A', Varus. There was a memo, Varus, there was a memo!

Quoted from Aatrox in game haunts on Varus. It seems that every darkin but Varus have a double-a in their names. Since "Darkin" is merely a alternative name for Ascended (or trapped Ascended in a narrow sense), the name of the darkin is inherit from the name of the Ascended host, and this would mean most if not all Ascended would have a double-a in their names, which is obviously not the case.

Look at the Ascended names we have in game: Nasus, Renekton, and Xerath; and the Ascended names we have from the lore: Setaka, Ta’anari, Syphax, Zigantus, Xuuyan, Shabaka, Shabake, Valeeva, Cebotaru, Naganeka, and Enakai. None of them got a double-a names, except Ta’anari with an apostrophe in between.

Then that will lead us to another conclusion. It is either all Ascended without double-a were dead without trapping (except Varus maybe), or, the Ascended will change their name once they were trapped. However, Aatorx did retain his name after he became a Darkin...

Would Myisha (Zoe) trap Renekton and Xerath too? Why make Darkin in the first place?

Myisha targeted all the troublesome ascended left from the ancient Shurima, except Nasus, Azir, Xerath and Renekton. Azir, Xerath and Renekton are not trapped because they only resurfaced recently but we don't know why she didn't trapped Nasus. Maybe she think Nasus poses no threat to the citizen? Actually we don't even know why she trapped the other Ascended.

“Trust me,” said Myisha, “what we did here spells the beginning of the end for your kind.”

“Then we did it. We brought peace.”

Then she really did laugh. “Peace? Oh, no—this world will never know peace. Not really.”

Not peace, she was not concerning the life of the citizens on the sand region. Turning Ascended into Darkin Weapons would not reduce much of their harm to the world either. It seems that her only reason is to purify the void they carried. Since all Darkin were all polluted by the void monster they fought against.

In the lore of Renekton and Nasus, the war against void was not mentioned. Azir and Xerath are newly Ascended, so they are not yet polluted by void. My bet is Zoe would not plan to trap their spirit too. This is also supported by The Legends of the Darkin.

The whole turning Ascended into Darkin theory make so little sense since they are shown to be killable as Xuuyan and Setaka... Putting the darkin all around the world also make no sense. Darkins are from the Shurima and yet they are often portected by many people from the Ionia (Varus, Kayn), which is the farthest region from Targon... Reading through the updated lore is like hearing a lie full of flaws.

I can't answer all of your questions, but...

The Double A Thing: It's just a joke poking fun at the portion of the fanbase that wanted Varus to be renamed Vaarus. I doubt there's any deeper meaning to it.

Why Ionia?: Neither Rhaast or Varus were in Ionia of their free will. In fact, as far as we know, Rhaast still hasn't been there, as he was unearthed in Noxus and he and Kayn are still there when Kayn's story leaves off. Varus was defeated by the unnamed warrior-queen and carried to Ionia by her, where she entombed herself along with the bow inside the Pit of Pallas.

Off topic a bit but a theory of mine is that Sivir is actually Ascendant posessed. Ta'anari was sealed inside the crossblade in his weakened state but it was recovered and returned to it's tomb, probably by Nasus, for Sivir to find. When she picked it up Ta'anari sensed her heritage and has been very slightly modifying her body, partly to protect the legacy of Shuriman Royalty and to give humanity a warrior to face the other Darkin.

The answer to this would be that Sivir did not retrieve the Chalicar from Setaka's tomb. The where abouts of Setaka's tomb is unknown even in Twilight of the gods and likely the tomb that Sivir retrieves the Chalicar from likely belongs to Myisha or Idri'Mi.

Myisha states that "some" Ascended turned out okay (Nasus and possibly others) hence there was no point in killing them, we know Nasus was not involved in the Darkin War for example. In Ta'anari's speech he literally says in the Darkin did not start a war among themselves they could have stormed Mount Targon and steal the power of the heavens from them. The Darkin literally enslaved entire continents if not all of Runeterra, at one point in history.

Not peace, she was not concerning the life of the citizens on the sand region. Turning Ascended into Darkin Weapons would not reduce much of their harm to the world either. It seems that her only reason is to purify the void they carried. Since all Darkin were all polluted by the void monster they fought against.

While it would makes a lot of sense, I do not think all Darkin were corrupted by the Void, however all Darkin were in involved in the Void invasion caused by Icathia's Fall. The Darkin followed in their empire's example and attempted to conquer the world each on their own, hence the Darkin we know of were sealed outside of Shurima. More than likely Rhaast and Aatrox were in Valoran when they we captured, only Varus is known to have been moved to Ionia. Also, keeping all of the trapped Darkins in a single location/ region wouldn't have been a good idea at all.

The Targonians trapped the Darkin to allow the mortals to use the sealed Darkin to slay unsealed Darkin, an underlying reasoning maybe that Targon knew killing all of them would be a waste of power, should the Void return the remaining sealed Darkin would prove useful for defending against the Void in a world where few Ascended still exist.

Myshaia didn't try to trap Nasus cause Nasus would curbstomp her.

A good read. I don't like the updated Darkin lore, i think it adds humanity to a bunch of warmongers which took from their character however...

"Would Myisha (Zoe) trap Renekton and Xerath too? Why make Darkin in the first place?"

No, there is a big difference (and Riot need to actually make it known) of a Darkin and a Ascended who didn't go to war. Darkin is a Shuriman word for Fallen. It is the name given to Ascended's who had fallen from their purpose and grace, destroyed themselves and were destroying their people in the process.

Xerath, Renekton, Nasus are not Darkin, they are just Ascended's, Xerath and Renekton seemingly trapped in a weird dimension for 1000 years, Nasus was stacking. There may be other Ascended's out there somewhere just not named or listed. Not every Ascended's would have went to war or had PSTD from fighting the Void.

"The whole turning Ascended into Darkin theory make so little sense since they are shown to be killable as Xuuyan and Setaka... Putting the darkin all around the world also make no sense. They are definitely killable but bloody hard to kill. Some stronger and others and imbedded with magics as well as their own Ascension powers may have been far beyond what the average moral can even compete with. It would be like Green Arrow taking on Superman with no magic or kryptonite. Sure he can have a go but do you really expect him to win?

Sorry if someone already mentioned this.

Well, since the prophecy about the crossblade is that it will bring great destruction or unity, perhaps Ta'anari is sealed within the crossblade, and just hasn't surfaced yet.

I mean, it has effected Sivir in some pretty major ways, in terms of her personality, as she fawns over it like Gollum and the one ring. So, perhaps that is Ta'anari influencing Sivir, trying to make the prophecy come true.

I just want to say that: As far as i know, the Darkin were not "polluted" by the Void, their fight against the Void only gave them some kind of PTSD... But their bodies were not corrupted or anything.
