Freljord region strenghts and weaknesses analysis

I decided to do a series of threads where I analysis a faction's strenghts and weaknesses in case of a war with others, starting with Freljord. So without further ado let's get into it.

Freljord is a harsh and unforgiving land. Proud and fiercely independent, its people are born warriors, with a strong raiding culture.

Freljord's people are natural warriors, with much ferocity and experience in battles. While in general they lack good leadership and strategy in battles, their ferocity and brutality makes up for it, as well as their other strenghts.

#####SPECIALITIES Basically, some advantages and strenghts that Freljord has, which are unique to the region.

The Iceborns The Iceborns are Freljord's equivalent of an MCU supersoldier (like Captain America). They are incredibly strong, and they carry True Ice weapons. True Ice is lethal at touch to almost anyone who isn't an Iceborn, is incredbily durable, and can't melt unless there are very specific circumstances (like Ornn melting True Ice). Iceborns can also use Ice magic to some degree even if they are not mages (Lissandra is both Iceborn and a mage) through their True Ice weapons, which are capable of creating normal Ice constructs and in the case of bows, Ice projectiles (like Ashe's bow). The Frostguard has especially powerfull Iceborns due to their training and discipline, being the only tribe in Freljord that has military discipline.

Draklorns Draklorn's are Iceborns from the Frost Guard that use Dark Ice magic and artefacts. They are healers, acting as religious emisarries, as well as warriors when it is needed. Maalcrom, a low-ranked Draklorn, was able to best Grena, the leader of the Avarosans, in combat, as well as stomping her personal guard Iceborns. And Draklorns aren't even the top of the Frostguard forces, as some Iceborns there go through intense training since childhood and only the strongest survive (ex of them: the ones in Eye of the Abyss story)

Warbeasts Freljord also has huge warbeasts to act as siege weaponry, transport, and overall to crush their enemies... literally. The most common of those are the mamooths.

Sejuani was a true Warmother now—commanding thousands of blooded warriors, steelclad, mammoth riders, and Iceborn.

But there also also bigger beasts of war, like the one is Galio's story.

The barbarians pulled off the behemoth’s covering, revealing a snarling, mangled snout beneath a beady pair of jet-black eyes. Free from its blinders, the creature erupted in a fearsome roar, as if declaring itself ready to ravage everything in sight. The monster’s handlers released a mechanism that let loose the chains, and the behemoth threw itself into the opposing infantry, instantly slaying a dozen Demacians with just one swipe of a saber-like claw.

Ice magic Freljord's most common magic manifests as Ice magic, whether through Iceborns, ice mages, or both. As I said before, Iceborns can use raw Ice magic, and Ice mages can use more refined Ice magic but probably with less raw power on average. Sometimes, an Ice mage is also an Iceborn, even tho that's not necesarly the case for everyone.

Inside, an old frost mage was pouring wine into a dish on an altar. He turned to see Ryze approaching, and seemed to judge him silently.

Yago, from Ryze's color story, was a Freljordian hearthbound Ice mage. Freljord also has arcane mages, tho I suspect they are less in number than Ice ones.

Suddenly a shock of blinding purple seared through the fray, causing scores of Demacians to drop to their knees. Galio felt it then – that familiar sensation in his fingertips, like the noon sun warming cool alabaster. He could almost wiggle them...

An important note, Dark Ice magic also has healing properties. Frost priests and Draklorns (who are high-ranked Frost Priests) are capable of healing people, and high-ranked Draklorns can even heal a severed arm.

He probably wouldn't heal a broken or severed arm where anyone could see. But it is within his power, though that would really tax him and would have other costs.

#####MEN POWER

As I said before, Freljord's people are born natural warriors, even the ones who are not Iceborns. They may lack proper training and military discpline (except for the Frostguard) but they are strong and brutal in combat, as only the strong survive in harsh lands such as Freljord. They are usually armed with big, crude weapons that rely on physical strenght, such as broad swords, axes and hammers, but they also have bows and throwing spears as ranged weapons. Examples of those are: http://imgur.com/a/zstLQ0i http://imgur.com/a/g7U1W8L The armor varies from little to none, to fully-cover body armor like the Frostguard Draklorns use (like Maalcrom). This is mainly because outside of Frostguard, Freljordian warriors aren't uniformised, therefore there are no standard armor or weapon sets for a warrior. Besides the heartbound warrios and the Iceborns, Freljord also has Frost Trolls, which many of them are controlled by Lissandra. They are very, very big, and could probably swallow a human whole.

#####THE URSINES

The Ursines will sometimes ally with a tribe if they see the battle worthy enough of them. They are composed of huma savages, who wear little to nothing, but are extremly brutal, bears, who are actually trapped shamans into bear forms, and monsters with bear-like forms with different features each, like 3 mouths, or a raven-skull head, and... you get the idea, I don't want to go deeper into this. But it's some fucked up shit I can assure you. Actually fuck this I'll do it anyways.

They were strange amalgamations of bears and other creatures, things of legends, dreams, and folklore. They had all been men once too, but now, so consumed by the true spirit, they had passed beyond what the normal animals looked like. The largest of them, a huge bear-like thing, lumbered out of the forest—where its head should have been, a decayed elk’s skull rested on a mane of black feathers. Eyes glowing with blue fire, it opened its jaws to reveal a child’s face inside its maw. Then the child opened its own mouth too, spewing a foul brown liquid. Other nightmares followed it from the woods, limping, crawling, and shambling forward.

Yeah... yeah.

#####FRELJORD POWERHOUSES

Sometimes, the Freljordians Spirit-Gods intervene themselves into conflicts, such as Volibear's avatar in Silence of the Damned, or Ornn when protecting a tribe from Ursines. They are incredibly powerfull, and if you want, you can check out my list of abilities in-lore of Ornn: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/9o2yoZdt-ornn-in-lore-list-of-abilities Besides the Demigods who are mostly a wild card that may or may not intervene, there is Lissandra, one of the high-tier mages of Runeterra. Her most notable achievement is sealing the Watchers, even if she required the power of an entire Iceborn army and the Yetis's power to do so, its still an immense feat.

#####HARSH LAND

Invading Freljord is like invading Russia during winter, as the land there is extremly harsh due to the constant cold weather, which the Freljordians are acustomed to now, but not the other factions.

#####WEAKNESSES

Every faction has weaknesses, and Freljord is no exception. So let's begin to list them.

  1. CIVIL WAR Right now, Freljord is divided, and into a big civil war. The 3 main sides are the Frostguard, the most disciplined and elite force of Freljord, having elite Iceborns, Draklorns (who besides being very good healers they are also beasts in combat, as a low-ranked one was able to best Grena in battle. Grena never lost a fight to any Iceborn prior to that.), and the even more elite Iceborns trained from birth like Sigvard from "Eye of the Abyss", as well as the Trolls, the Avarosans, who have the largest numbers, but the least Iceborns as most of the Avarosan colaition of tribes are formed of heartbounds, and the Winter Claw, who are the most brutal and savage of the tribes. Since they are in a constant civil-war right now, even if they were to unite in a war against another faction, the wounds of their civil war would still exist. As for now, they are very divided.

2.TECHNOLOGY Freljord is indeed very advanced in terms of Ice magic and healing, but it's level of technology is very, very low. They don't have any gunpowder weapons or siege weaponry using explosives outside magic. They have no vehicules outside their beasts and riding moose-like animals. This is a big disadvantage.

3.ARMY STRUCTURE As I said before, except for the Frostguard, the Freljordians aren't well organised per average, and they don't have actual military leadership like generals etc besides the warmothers who may be experienced in battles and thus able to make strategies and plans, but nothing on the level of generals and stragesists except for Lissandra the level of Swain or Nasus or even lower average generals like Demacian ones or Noxian ones.

So, that was it. Share your thoughts and feedback in the comments. Big thanks to The Iceborn for helping me with this thread.

Cool!

Three things to consider:

Under weaknesses-> you have number 3 -> army structure. I would argue that while Ashe and Sejuani aren’t at the political-strategic level of Swain and Nasus. They have other gifts

Tactically Sejuani is super strong. By age 15 Sejuani is shown planning a surprise attack to wipe out another tribe. This is before she grew up. She’s cunning, risk taking, and unpredictable. If your looking for a leader that might pull off some Hannibal, Gengis Khan, or Patton type tactis — she’s your girl. I’m not saying she’d obviously best Darius, Jarvan, or Irelia— but I would bet on her doing something they werent expecting or even thought was possible.

Ashe on the other hand has that rarer gift of true leadership. People are drawn to her and she brings out the best in her top advisors and warriors. People are willing to die for her because they believe and trust in her. Thus her advisors and top people really are doing their best work because she brings out the best in them. While Swain and Lissandra’s top people probably work out of fear and politics.

Finally Lissandra is a wild card for Ashe and Sejuani and the whole equation. If your talking about a war between nations — who is Lissandra gonna help? I.e. Swain attacked Ashe? I’d bet on Lissandra helping Ashe — and that is super dangerous for everyone. Lissy can probably match Swain strategically. She’s not a long term ally — but any plan that he has she might counter or inform Ashe of his actions. (As long as it doesn’t infer with her goals) she might even try and curry favor or plant agents in Sejuani’s tribe by countering Swain. ( Also what are Lissy’s Real, Real goals? People should be approaching the new bio’s differently. They are an overview. We are intentionally not over- revealing. —did the bio show who Udyr was or why he was powerful? — you get that from stories. A bio can’t really convey grit, heart, intelligence or emotional struggle viscerally.)

Their biggest strength is flexing their bellyful of abs and bikini bod even in the coldest weather thanks to their icebornness. What beats that really.
