Katarina's Fighting Style
Who taught it to her? Abilities like shunpo and death lotus?
Is it Ionian?
I mean her father was a great swordsman and all but...who taught him? The names have distinct "eastern" vibe.

I believe it is coincidence. Katarina was among the first champions released, only a little after Veigar, and back then Riot's design philosophy boiled down to: "does it sound cool? put it in!". At that time Master Yi was the only champion from Ionia, so I doubt the future Noxus/Ionia conflict was even conceived of at the time, otherwise I do not think her abilities would have been labeled so awkwardly.
If I had a say, then I think that Katarina's family might have descended from a line of magi that decided to become assassins. I mean Why else is she listed as Assassin/Mage and deal so much magic damage when most assassins deal physical damage?
