Dragon Dad, You Will Be Missed

Shyvana - Biography - Universe of League of Legends

It used to be the case that Shyvana's father was also a dragon, though one more virtuous than her mother. This dragon father fought to save her life at the moment of her hatching and raised Shyvana by himself. He taught her restraint and sacrificed his life to protect her from her mother Yvva.

And now he's been retconned out of existence.

It is with a heavy heart that I pay my respects to League's outright virtuous full dragon. He will be missed.

I'm not happy. First we lost Shyvana's human mother, instead her egg was tampered with by a mage and that mutated her. Yvva wanted to kill Shyvana and her father wanted to raise Shyvana. Now we got this kidnapper who doesn't have a name, who I don't care about, who dies. Where is Shyvana's father? Where is the time Shyvana's father was killed by her mother? Where is the time she spent trading game in a Demacian town? This is a straight up emotional investment downgrade.

They removed the explanation behind Shyvana being a half-dragon. We went from human parent and dragon parent to a mage tampering with her egg to make her a mutant, and THEN to no explanation at all. She was just kidnapped. Screw that guy. He's just a kidnapper.

Yvva. What is up with Yvva? She LOST her motivation. First she goes after the stolen egg. Later she feels Shyvana is still out there and goes looking for her. At this point, presumably because she wants her child back. She goes and burns down anything between her and her daughter. I can understand the ire. She burns and kills Shyvana's kidnapper, understandably so. Yvva isn't trying to kill Shyvana for being a mutant here. As far as can be seen, she just wants her daughter back so she can be raised properly, like her other children that left the nest.

The scene of the battle between Jarvan, Shyvana, and the Demacians has been downsized. What happened to the petricite building and petricite arrows that helped ground Yvva so Shyvana could fight her? What about the burning power of the fire rune in Shyvana that she dug deep into to draw out power from so she could RIP Yvva's heart out?

This was a change for the sake of change that decreased investment in the character and removed side characters that helped with investing the audience. The narrative presented here? I would say I just didn't care about it, but it is worse, because I know there is a better version of this story. I am disappointed. I expect better because it WAS better.

Why change this story?! Why erase one of the best father figures?

In the previous one Shyvana had to stand up to her mother who despised her and treated her as an embarassment that should be erased: this and being on the run all the time fit well with her personality and toughness. Also in this new lore the guy kinda...stole her from her nest like a jackass. This just makes the whole "By the blood of my father, I will end them" line useless.

Great job. Great job. [zombie-brand-facepalm]

RIP dragon dad! Though I imagine it has more to getting rid of the "Devouring Mother" archetype than getting rid of the virtuous father.

...owch... Man dads seriously get the short end of the stick in the LoLverse.

Was this really necessary? Did it make the lore or Shyvana any better? I don't think so.

I think the lore team needs a change in direction.

Normally I'll defend Riot lore, but this is just stupid. One, Shuys lore was still relatively new, two, it removes dragon dad, and three, it makes it so Shuy killed her mom herself and not together with J4 and the villagers. it's the togetherness that made the story. Rito WTF

This seems kinda...pointless? Didn't they already rewrite the lore to introduce the mage but have her dragon father be the one that took Shyvana away from her mother to protect her?

Not only does this kill the idea of Shyvana accidentally being related to Ryze, but it kills some interesting dynamic with Shyvana herself as someone who was raised by a dragon.

I'd say that there is one positive thing about this lore: It mentions that Shyvana has a sibling, which is honestly quite the interesting concept, because now it is possible that he/she might come for Shyvana for revenge.

However I agree that the removal of dragon dad was unnecessary and the motivation of Shyvanas mother is never really explained making it kinda random that she is chasing Shyvana all of a sudden.

Man this is a huge disappointment. Thief is a Jack ass that only didn't sell her because she looked human now.

I feel nothing for him or care what happened to him.

I really dislike the fact that they left it an open window the question on why she is a half dragon. Left it open only to answer it in some vague explanation that will spawn even more questions.

One dragon dad was lost, but a human dad rose from the ashes. I think this change was made to further push her half-dragon, half-human thematic.

Also, I didn't notice it before, but it was a bit illogical how someone raised by a dragon could so easily fit into a human society. Her being raised in a human environment makes more sense.

Why is her mum going after her of she's grown if her other kid has completely left

Wouldn't that be good for the dragon to know Shyvana is good and well?

Also does this confirm that Shyvanas real dad is a human who copulated with a dragon?
