Is there a canonical reason why Demacia and Ionia don't team up?

So in the lore Demacia and Noxus HATE each other. This is known. But Noxus invaded Ionia, killing tons of innocent people and committing terrible atrocities. They kicked Noxus out and now they're independent. So wouldn't it make SENSE that they team up with Demacia and just wipe the floor with Noxus? Like some people have claimed that Demacia has its head up its own ass and are too busy not caring but that doesn't make any sense. "Oh hi we're an extremely powerful people that have produced the likes of Shen MasterYi Yasuo Irelia Ahri and possibly XinZhao (he's not originally from Demacia after all.) and we really hate Noxus too!" Maybe theres an entry or something that i missed but this just doesn't make any sense to me.

Its likely because both nations are pretty far away from each other(given the info we have about the map,its likely that they are still at opposite locations of the known world),which likely makes communication between these 2 pretty terrible, since their messengers would need to either cross right through noxus or make a big circle around them.

Also both nations tend to keep to themselves,so teaming up with others is likely that they usually don't do.

Well previously, before Riot redid the Lore, there were the rune wars between Demacia and Noxus and also between their allies, Zaun and Piltover, which were so devastating that the rune magic was almost destroying the very continent of Runeterra itself.

To prevent that, a group of powerful mages, the "Summoners" ended the war by forcing a peace contract between those nations. If they wouldn't respect these contracts, the Summoner's would just use their insane magical powers to kill everyone who defies it - and they did several times. Instead, to settle political conflicts, every nation state would choose "champions", that would be controlled by the summoners to fight in the summoner's rift and other places. Summoners were also able to revive these champions whenever and create obstacles like minions and champions.

With not being able to fight Demacia anymore, Noxus needed someone else. Demacia, Noxus, Piltover and Zaun all were part of the contract, Shurima was still pretty much dead and Bandle City was very well hidden. They had to choose between Bilgewater, Freljord and Ionia. With the first two creating a lot of difficulties, either because of harsh terrain or political and economical ties that they didn't want to destroy, they chose Ionia, especially because they've never known war before. This especially was a driving factor for Noxus, they believed it to be a disgrace because they only believed in strength and might is right. In their eyes, Ionia was deserving of the invasion because they needed to be taught that not trying to achieve your strongest self will inevitably end in your own destruction.

Ionia didn't really care about the mainland up until this point, they were full of peaceful people minding their own business. When the Summoner's offered their protection Ionia refused because they didn't want the mainland to have influence and they haven't had wars ever before, so why would they need it? So basically being unprepared for the invasion and not being able to listen to the warnings of Demacia which couldn't intervene because they can't go to war against Noxus, they got hit hard. After reciving loss after loss and finally fighting back a bit under Karma's and Irelia's lead, they finally agreed to join the League of Legends.

This also meant that they had to settle their differences with Noxus like everyone else did, with a match on the Summoner's Rift. This actually did even take place irl, pro players had to battle it out and one side could only choose Noxian or Zaunite champions while the other side was picking Demacian, Piltover and Ionian champs. Ionia won and because of that, Ionian boots were added to the game.

Of course, they've killed the lore after all so it doesn't make sense now. Until they finally release enough lore for the whole universe to make sense again there also won't be any sense to it in the future. For example, the whole game concept doesn't make sense anymore and purely theoretically Runeterra should be done with by now since the Rune Wars never ended.

Well Ionia's a continent, and not a necessarily united one, while Demacia's an isolationist society on the other side of the world from Ionia. The chances of any kind of diplomcy coming about between the two is slim as far as I can see, and even if they did team up Ionia's provinces, even united, probably lack a substantial army with which to fight a war, while Demacia's armies are pretty much ALWAYS out numbered. Ionia managed to repel Noxus seemingly through a butt ton of magic, rather than a unified military campaign.

And not only this but Noxus is probably the most expansive nation in modern Runeterra with the greatest reach across the world, largest standing army and probably the greatest bureaucracy known to the modern world too. They're also a society that very much built itself around a war-culture, so it's not like they're gonna shy away from some very unlikely union between Demacia and Ionia's unified provinces.

Demacia is all about fighting Noxus, that is all it really cares about, so they would intervene if it's not in their interests which proves the rotten side of Demicia.

Ionia is not a Faction but just a Region. A lot of people in Ionia follow their own paths.

It's been mentioned that Demacia has survived being a sworn enemy of Noxus due to convenient defensive geography and rich lands that allow them to have very well equipped, well trained troops, despite fewer numbers. They are a much smaller state than the Noxian Empire and I'd bet they wouldnt be very successful in an offensive conflict. Ionia is a continent far away from them which they likely have little to no contact with. Ionia itself is probably full of many different states and not entirely unified.

if you check Taliyah lore you will notice how she had to travel to freljorh to go back to the big part of the continent, i assume that noxus is right between ionia an demacia, meaning you either cross the frozen land, or go throught pitlover zaun area (go around noxus territory) or go around the globe like magallanes, risking on the open ocean, infested with creatures and dark mist

why do rural demacians own bearskin rugs while city folk have velvet rugs?

To be completely honest I don't see Demacia being allies with Ionia. Sure they might not launch an invasion against them anytime soon, because they're all about justice and stuff. But don't forget that Demacia and Ionia aren't exactly "good" and Noxus isn't exactly "evil." Demacia and Ionia seem to just be their own places and Noxus seems to just want to expand and conquer. The latter does seem a bit evil but the former are more neutral to me.

Don't forget Karma from Ionia, When noxus attacked her village.

''As the noxians advanced, the villagers prepared to accept death, bound to their peaceful vows. But karma would not accept death and instead saw another way: Scarificing a single life to spare many others. To save her people, She drew upon the power within and summoned the full force of her will. A burst of spirit fire emerged from her body and spiraled towards the noxian general. The flame took the form of twin dragons, The symbol of Ionia itself. It was the first time karma had ever used her powers to harm instead of protect, and neither she nor the villagers had ever seen anything like it. When the magic subsided, the general had fallen before her and his soldiers had scattered. The opposing forces surrendered to karma's strength leaving her people, and her traditions untouched.''

She is BAD@SS!

I think part of it might have to do with Demacian pride. From the readings I've done, they don't ever fall back even if its better strategically to do so, they would refuse to use hex tech until it was proven that their current methods were completely inadequate, and other things like this. They probably would rather drink just pure Teemo shroom juice for a year straight than let anyone know that they actually accepted help from another nation to destroy their rival.

Demacia produced Garen meathead, Irelia is from Ionia, and look at the pelvic, it really reflect the growth in muscles of martial artists. that part i gotta give Riot points for realitism in art

Old lore: Demacia couldn't defend Ionia since Demacia and Noxus were a part of the Institute of War, which forbade wars with one another, especially with runes/heavy magic. Ionia was invaded because they were the only nation at the time who weren't a part of the IoW.

New lore: We don't know.

I like to think that after kicking Noxus out but seeing they still had their own problems in Zed and Syndra, not to mention the government getting corrupt enough to let Jhin out, I'd say it's a mix of Ionia as a whole not wanting to deal with anyone else's shit and the fact that if they made political ties with annoying goody-goodies like Demacia the corruption would show and they get further sucked up in the squabbles of the world, which Ionia can actually ill afford.
