Don't you think the Lore is actaully kinda wasted?

I mean, the writing team creates really good stories, actual good charcters with motives and reasons of their own, yet not a lot of people read those stories. Hell, there are people who don't even know what the lore is for the champs they main, it's quite annoying tbh. Moreover, the creative team actually make pictures of how the different nations look like, the nature and feel of a nation plus its landmarks, but we can never see them in person, rather we are stuck with the same ol' rift ( with new small changes for each event). All of that work is really wasted, don't you think so? I mean, every MMO-RPG game creator would love to take all of that work and put it in his game, hell even 1/4 of all this would be still good, yet we get nothing from the lore gamewise (other then feeling a bit cocky when you know a story and a champ more then a person who plays him a lot). Please, Make something with the Lore.

It's kind of in this awkward position for old lore fans where all the stuff they followed is getting retconned left and right. Even if it's objectively of a higher quality it really hurts investment when what you're invested in keeps getting thrown away.

Riot needs to make games not just one MOBA game, and what better game to do than an lore focused game set in the Runterran universe.

A LoL RPG of some sort would be pretty wicked.

I'll agree that one of the things that has struck me as peculiar in League of Legends compared to most other games is how disconnected the lore feels from the gameplay. Usually lore in a game serves to create meaningful context for a player's decisions, but I don't even really get how the constant battles on Summoner's Rift fit into the metaplot, how champions who are sworn rivals have no trouble fighting on the same team, why fierce-looking jungle monsters are totally passive until someone attempts to kill them, what minions are beyond pinatas full of gold & XP, etc, etc.

In short, nothing that happens in the game itself makes any sense to me in the context of the lore and it's better for my suspension of disbelief to ignore all of it the moment I leave the champion select. It makes League of Legends feel like a spinoff combat game pulling its setting and characters from other established franchises, similar to Heroes of the Storm or Smash Bros. Or sometimes it kind of feels like Riot has an in-house staff of fanfic writers on the company payroll. It's weird.

Don't get me wrong, I think the vast majority of the lore is of exceptional quality, and that is probably at least partially due to it being completely unconstrained from having to compromise its excellence to serve the gameplay (and same goes vice versa). Also, narrative is just one of the many elements that strike me as strangely untethered to League's overall experience (others are where skins fit into this, the game's eSport focus while adopting the visuals & terminology of RPGs, and... well... don't even get me started about how emotes are expected to be used to express anything about the game itself beyond "that was good" and "that was bad").

However, as much as this frees each individual design element to reach its full potential, this also results in an entertainment product whose whole isn't really any better than the sum of its parts. It's like how a movie soundtrack needs to support and be supported by the visuals and story but even if (or especially if) it's excellent in its own right but incongruous to the other elements it distracts and ultimately detracts from the full movie experience.

Or, to use maybe a more apt metaphor, the various aspects of League of Legends remind me of a team of champions who each are trying to solo carry the game alone rather than cooperate on a shared strategy.

I'm one of the bunch saying that they should start publishing their stories in paper, in book compilations and such. I mean, there is obviously a market for that, or they even wouldn't try to expando the lore to begin with. I'm one of those interested in reading and having LoL books, even if the stories are for free online. I just wan to have them.

Its hard to get amped up for something riots shown to be willing to dump completely on a moments notice.

Honestly man the lore doesn't matter. Out of 150ish champs, only 2 (riven and yasou) have a semblance of a complete story arcs.

A LoL RPG has so much potential with the amount of lore the League universe has.

I can almost imagine it now...creating a character, choosing a class to specialize him in and a faction to join...Yeah...I'll keep dreaming.

What i really dislike about lore is in-game implementation. Stories a great, but when they are making a voiceover for character, they base it too much off the stories rather than actual lore. Take Taric for example, he speaks about his mountain so freaking much like he has nothing else to tell.

Soraka Rules5/8/2018, 9:52:50 PM2 votes

Remember when League's client had a dedicated tab for new lore/news? Good times!

Digielf5/7/2018, 10:09:24 AM2 votes

We can at least start from what this moba is capable of and that means adding the alternate Summoner Rift skins and announcer packs in the store or and as reward drops and in addition the other lore maps as available custom game modes. Dota 2 has like 500+ custom maps including stuff that arent related to dota which came from wc3's custom map system.

"yet not a lot of people read those stories"

maybe that is because, o I don't know, them changing the story as soon as you finish reading it.

I kind of see league in two ways- the lore universe, and the ingame universe. If the game went by the lore, Chogath would take up the entire map, or at least half of it. While it isn't easy to see the lore ingame because of how drastically different the two are by default, it also makes the lore a little more special. If you become close to a champion that you love, you might one day decided to look up their lore and see who they really are, and you might just become even more closely linked to them. Digging a little deeper for lore and personality isn't always fun, but finding that gem is almost always well worth the search.

Jaspers5/9/2018, 11:00:15 AM1 votes

The lore, all of it, is just some subsection on the website. Dragon Age has 3 games with loads of world history, plus all of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age#Other_media

And Dragon Age isn't even the biggest series Bioware have.

There is so much potential that Riot could do if they allow their characters to become more than just a short story on a website and an in game character model.

tbh a MMO set in Runeterra would work so well....but MMOS are risky. Something thats better is maybe a single player RPG for Riot to test their feet. I think a single player RPG or Co-Op RPG could work very very well and the risk is low.

Reaper Soraka5/10/2018, 4:09:02 PM1 votes

This is NOT an RPG. There is no depth into cities or places to explore. Lore is just a page of...well...pretty much nothing. If they decide to make an MMO/RPG based on the world of Runeterra, then it will only be an easter egg to those who took the time to read into it.

Downvote away but they could remove lore all together and the majority wouldn't know the difference because there's little to intrigue.

Jinzo Torrance5/10/2018, 3:31:39 PM1 votes

Quite annoying not knowing the story behind some lines of code in a video game that will eventually get retconned anyway? Alrighty

I actually think Rito is working on another game right now that'll show off more of the lore they are working on but it isn't far enough along for them to announce.
