Bilgewater: The good and the bad.

The Bilgewater event is much closer to what I would like to see out of the lore team. There are a lot of things I like, but there are a few problems too. Here's how I see this event, in terms of what the lore team should and shouldn't be doing.

##Good:

  • This event has stories about the champions in the world of Runeterra, as people, interacting with each other, separate from their in-client lore.
  • This event fills out the lore for a faction that often goes unnoticed.
  • This event does not change the established lore for current champions more than a small amount.
  • Gangplank is scarier.
  • We know Twisted Fate's name now.
  • Nami's in-client lore is unchanged.
  • Nautilus's in-client lore is unchanged.
  • Fizz's in-client lore is unchanged.
  • Miss Fortune's in-client lore is unchanged or nearly so.

I really like seeing characters that we already know interacting with each other, as we already know them. Unlike the story with Azir and Xerath, these are characters that we already know about. Azir was brand new and Xerath's lore was newly rewritten, but Graves and TF are just like they've always been. Also, unlike the Descent into the Tomb videos, we actually see them as people. We don't get told, "This happened," we get to see it happening. We watch their rivalry causing chaos in Bilgewater, instead of hearing Nasus reading a history textbook. It's a well-written story that people can actually care about.

Also, you only ruined about half the in-client bios. That's a 50% improvement. More on that later.

##Needs Improvement:

  • We still have microscopic in-client lore for many champions.
  • Graves now has only 2 sentences of in-client lore.
  • Twisted Fate now only has 3 sentences of in-client lore.
  • Gangplank now has only 2 sentences of in-client lore.
  • We still needed a major "[faction] event" to get an interesting story.

The in-client lore is a major problem and it needs to be fixed. We have been given extremely vague promises of something to bolster the nearly nonexistent in-client bios, but here's the problem: That something isn't here yet. Until it gets here, don't give us two or three sentences and a screen mostly full of blank space. Even if this vague something finally shows up, the old bios will probably be better. We like the in-client bios. They're simple. They tell us in detail about who the champion is without making us go looking all over the internet for a story that came out of this or that faction event if there even is one. Many champions have had perfectly good bios deleted in favor of a two-sentence description. We don't have time to feel sad for Amumu - By the time we feel anything, we're done reading. You can't empathize with a short description. Skarner went from having an interesting story to being "a mysterious thing guarding a thing." You can't paint a picture of Nasus's conflict with Renekton in six sentences. The story makes Gangplank scary. Make his bio give us that impression.

This is just my take on things. I'd love to see some discussion. Hopefully, this will give Riot a clearer idea of what we want in lore.

We already gotten what bolster's the in-client bios. That would be what they just dropped on the site for Graves, Gangplank, and TF. Check them.

They In-client bios are all eventually going to be short. That's the overall plan. The full lore is going to be on the individual Champion pages on the LoL website. (also, check out Gankplank's, Graves's, and Twisted Fate's champ pages. Should make you happy)
