Prestige Editions & Gold Chromas - Do you get them for the look or for the symbolic value?

I really dont get it. Gold can be implemented in designs to enchant the product but if you let gold consume the other colors it looks extremly cheap. Do you really get it for the design or just to show some kind of dedication towards a champion you like.

If you would get the the original and the prestige edition of a skin for free which one would you use in game? Would it still be the prestige edition or the original or would you be switching between both?
