New SR's Blue & Red sides = the Protectorate & Magelords?

Aatrox's lore mentions these two ancient factions. Is it possible the new map represents the Protectorate and the Magelords? Their themes seem to line up.

The possibility does exist.

I'd figure the Protectorates had more of a robust, solid architecture. Look at the towers; they look like tanks that defend and protect, hence the name. More support also draws from their mascot, The Stag. look at it on google, hell even better, find the profile icon you got when SR updated. The design is blocky scrollwork, just like the rest of blue team. More of this mascot is visible in other stone decorations around the rift.

As to the Magelords, their mascot is An Owl. You might not see it, but the latches around the Nexus hole look faintly like their respective mascots. One of my screens gives greater resemblance.

The ruins are old, ancient, and worn down. Even the pits have broken structures that can tumble. Demacia and Noxus wouldn't have such poor maintenance on this map. Though both ancient factions became the two largest today, this rift does not seem recent.

Could it be that Demacia and Noxus eventually evolved from those nations? Like how Italy is completely different to Rome but still they are ancestors in blood.

The biggest problem is the minions.

IMO Bard interrupted Rune Wars when it was clear that it will leave a permanent corruption to Valoran plane. To preserve it from spreading into the cosmic fabric, Bard sealed the participants of the war(souls) into another plane of existence: Fields of Justice. From time to time, the most powerful characters post-Rune-war era are sealed into the same planes. (only temporally, due to them losing their gifts(or lives) without participating)

This is only my speculation and suggestion for a potential new lore. Gotta think it over once more.

Ummmmm Lore and Gameplay are completely disjointed.

That doesnt mean the map couldnt be inspired by some things in Runeterra, but it's been stated not to exist at all within Runeterra.

My point was: these 'planes' are outside runeterra. (read the post starting at 'IMO') And it has a purpose of existence. I see why the old lore retconned but I don't see a reason for a new lore to exist.

Yeah, but your opinion is a completely random conjecture that goes against the idea of Story and Game being separated.

I could argue with you for how long but still, the minions and the Rift NEED some attention lore-wise. They(Rito) started it themselves by placing the 'Protectorate' and 'Magelord' seals in the new Rift structures. Aatrox

The situation should not be in a limbo between 'no lore' and 'lore' map design. We need summoner 13

Did you know....Lissandra is Blind? And she was Blinded by the Ursine?

There are in fact, many small but important details of "lore" that are not at all in champion backgrounds or stories, but which have ONLY ever been stated by Rioters on the FORUMS -and people have complained about this before.

But back to what you were talking about...

The thing is Aatrox was released in 2013. The new map was released in 2014. But...considering how much work the map would have been, it was probably worked on for quite some time. So it makes sense the warrior/mage themes in the towers could have come from the small bit in Aatrox' lore. However -the big retcon also happened in 2014 at around the same time, or shortly after. Now, Varus (mid 2012) was the very last champion to even mention the League. Although some people called it much sooner, it took 2 years for the retcon to formally happen.

This makes me think the major design plans for the map were finished before the retcon was actually agreed upon. If it had of been decided before the map was done, and set in stone -they might not have made it in. (or it could have inspired some of the motif's of the new Rift anyway)

There's no way to be absolutely sure. Still, I have no belief that lore for minions or the rift will follow considering Riot "settled" the manner a year ago for MONTHS endured outrage on all fronts.

It would take an awful lot of momentum to suddenly make them 180 on this.

I appreciate that you took time for your post. My only concern is the lack of any Canon information considering minions :P The lore is really uncomplete atm. Let's hope they will fill some of the most necessary blank pages. (another thing, the seals are definitely ml vs Protectorate due to them having owl and stag sigils, which are confirmed as theirs.)

And the Rune Wars ARE Canon, And so are their consequences. That's the blank page. What stopped the Rune Wars? (aatrox didn't win them the whole war I think). Is there any reason why we wouldn't have Rune war II? If so, what keeps the peace? Demacia and Noxus are probably getting former retcon soon..

What are the World Runes? Why is the planet called Rune Terra? Were the World Runes what ignited the conflict of the Rune Wars?

That is an interesting question. (I was pretty sure this was a troll in some other server, we have 10 tryndameres here, one for every server. Checked his nationality and lol rank, seems legit!)

Well, we may imply that world runes are canon but Riot haven't informated(and maybe never will) us of them. I continue to think the Rune Wars as canon-ish, because there still are many in-game lore hints about it.

-the World Runes could be Runes with massive power. I think it's not the object of the war, more like the weapons used in the war.(now forbidden) -I have personally called Runeterra a plane. Why? Cause we don't know if their laws of physics are the same as we have. It may be a name the inhabitants have given to it, due to runes' role in their world view. -Nah.. More like a weapon.

Just suggestions and 'a completely random conjencture'. I find this interesting. Ryze

If i'm not mistaken though both of those became nations of today. I think its actually Noxus and Demacia. Demacia being the winning army and why Aatrox has the justicar skin to show how demacia views him.

Im pretty sure the current lore team has not read up on any of the previous lores.

In the new summoners rift vid they put out, i remember the art guy saying the designs for the two sides were based solely on 'one is more rounded out' vs the other 'more blocky in design'.
