Zac's parents and Janna

Honestly I've been impressed with the story and lore updates, shurima and piltover were really well done in my opinion and I'm glad we got to see their champions in a clearer light.

But this new zaun lore is the first one I'm upset from.

Most importantly the first time I read zac's lore a year ago I was shocked the parents made it out alive, I didn't understand it because I thought every champion had to have some tragic backstory for motivation, but hearing his voice lines and seeing his character it made sense that his parents didn't need to die, he was always going to be the big brother hero champion of league.

In the end Zac's parents dying was really unneeded in my opinion just put in their didn't really add to the plot much.

Janna was alright, imo thought it was weird she was turned into a kind of wind goddess that is powered from praise and worship, but her involvement in zaun made up for it I believe and I think her interactions with the blited citizens of Zaun might make some interesting stories in the future.

Tl;Dr Zac's parents didn't need to die, Janna new lore is alright althouh a bit strange

I posted this in another thread but I think it's relevant here.

Character's personalities need to believably descend from their background.

Zac What motive does a sentient blob monster have to be good? He may be a thinking being, but humanity is absolutely foreign. Zac NEEDED something to anchor him to humanity, to make him care.

The whole "absorbing feelings" thing and his parents giving him a moral compass provide a framework for that, but the reason he so strongly lives accordingly is because of their deaths. Without grief I don't believe he could feasibly relate to human misery or truly understand what it means to be "good." He needs an incredibly powerful character foundation, because of how not-human he is.

Also, Zac needs to relate to Zaun itself. Zaun is not a "good just because" place. It is a place of chaos and turmoil, which fuels the beauty that it can produce. Zaun is a statement about how hardship can produce greatness, tragedy can create beauty, and the depths of human depravity can spark true "goodness" in retaliation.

This is a running theme in every Zaun champion, and for Zac to completely eschew that would make the setting less immersive. Ekko Ekko has two loving parents in Zaun, but that's okay because he gets moral complexity in other areas. (See the "Lullaby" story) Janna Janna is very "good" but was essentially born due to the disaster that created the canal. The cruelness and toxic Gray in Zaun fuels the prayers that allow her to do good.

I think they've done a fantastic job tying Zaun into all of the Champions that live there.

Just venting but I thought City of Iron & Glass wasnt as... edgy or grim dark as i imagined it would. In fact what we got felt alot like a Charles Dickens story or what ever. Dont get me wrong the whole story was 10/10 and more importantly it showed the lighter side of the region. I just hyped myself for something more akin to the Engineering the Nightmare is all.

Actually I wanted to learn more about Zaun itself more than anything. So far I've learned more about Zaun's history from the Piltover LU then anything, which feels odd atm. So im hoping i can at least get my grim dark fix from the second half of the Zaun LU!

I personally love Janna's new lore. It makes a lot more sense. Her appearance and old lore made absolutely no sense, as it was just "Little girl in Zaun got wind powers, she's a super hero now." That didn't explain her clothing, abilities or even her elf ears. Now her elegant and strangely angelic appearance is because she's just some wind goddess, who is prominent in Zaun because of the massive amounts of Zaun Grey (something we hear about A LOT in Zaun).

Honestly, the way I see it, his parents needed to die for several reasons. And these reasons don't even have to deal with character development either.

Let's say his parents survived.

3 things could happen.

Takeda sends out more people to try and kill them, succeeds and then Zac is still parentless.

His folks could have moved away, but then there's a problem which causes 2 things.

If they move, will Zac join them. If he does, he won't be around to help out Zaun as a hero. Now they have to hide him and keep him being caught by OUTSIDE threats.

Let's say they move, but Zac stays. He can't run with them because he won't be able to hide as well as they can. What happens? Zac doing what he does as in the story, but now his parents aren't around. They aren't dead, sure, but they best as well be.

As long as the scientists were in the city, they are under constant threat of discovery, and Zac won't be able to save them every single time.
