When I think of Praetorians I think of hard ass roman mofos blinging pteruges and shielding the m fing imperator against the horde

Terminators are cool, but I feel like the name was just taken for sounding cool.

It was completely taken because it sounds cool.

Praetor really just means elite person or premiere man in Latin. It was a magistrate position. We just think of the Praetorian Guard, who were literally just “The guards of the premiere men.” They May have been good soldiers. They may have been a more honorary position for men of a certain class who never even finished soldier training. The position tended to flip between pretty much ceremonial to honoring the best depending on the time period.

You could maybe make a case for the robots to be some vanguard force. So they are premiere. But that’s not the kind of premiere that “prae” implies anyway. Or maybe they’re the best robots?

In any case. They should have picked a better word.

I wanted my Roman Graves holding a fucking Balista.

The name probably is of little relevance, different people are going to take different things away from it.

To me they sound and act like the Praetors from Magic the Gathering

    Praetorian Graves

"Unleashed upon the multiverse by imperfect Pulsefire technology, Graves is but one of a numberless horde of Praetorian marauders now plaguing spacetime. Its programming is unlike anything from any known past, present, or future-- each of its thoughts is so complex, it would take ten lifetimes for a human to comprehend.

Pulsefire means time travel. An error could have occurred where an AI was trying to model a new unit off something. Perhaps it looked to Roman Praetorian Guards and modeled a Terminator Esque unit/combat drone after it. According to the lore, it was imperfect or an error occurred and no time/date stamp occourred. Also it says multi verse. The AI or whatever could have glimpsed into OUR world and examined Roman Praetorians and decided to just name them that.

Or maybe it just sounds cool.
