At first I thought league lacked Asian characters...
But then I realized.

Yah I guess. Ionia = asia
The real thing they're lacking is black/dark-skinned characters. There's

uhh pretty sure karma is black and malz is Arabic or something.

But Malza is getting whiter in next update.
Yeah well Karma and Nidalee appear white in a some of their skins (and Karma was originally white), and Malz's skin tone is relatively unknown. But the fact that there's like 4 black/tanned people out of how many humanoid champions means that they're lacking. There are more blue-skinned champs than dark-skinned ones.
Karma could be based on Thai or Pakistan. I don't doubt that China or Japan has dark skinned asians because they still have tribes or very rural places so she could still be based on older Chinese/Japanese traditions.

I wonder if this skin references thai inspirations.
I think Sona is from ionia but was immigrated to or raised in Demacia.
Nidalee...eh. Living in the jungle tends to make one dark-skinned so idk.
Not sure if you can tell if zed is asian.
Pretty much anyone from Ionia asian. Thats kind of the Asia for league.

Udyr and Kennen aren't Asian. They're from other continents who have come to live in Ionia.
And I agree with the lack of non-white champions. I was so hoping Kalista would be more African tribal than she was and less ancient Grecian. It's weird to me that we get a female Void creature before a black woman.
Don't we have Karma though? Which then brings me to a question. Why is Karma forgotten in discussions like these? We try to think of black champions and Lucian's the only one that instantly comes to mind for a lot of people. Is this a design error? I question if it's an error because Lucian is most notably recognizable by his guns. Doesn't this put a bad image if we can only remember a black champion because of a stereotype like this but we can't remember a black champion (who's female by the way) and also has a unique magical ability? Just sayin'.

Karma is such a gray area. She's not distinctly black, but she is more Asian than anything. Vocally, she's definitely a black woman, but that was from the voice actor trying to channel Storm and Gaia from 90s cartoons. So no, I wouldn't call Karma a black woman and my comment still stands that we got a female Void monster before a black woman.
From her skin tone, I would say she is south american, but this isn't about earth races, so why is this even a question?
And all except Karma of them are (or used to be) insanely broken.
Udyr and Kennan are not from Ionia.
Malzahar is not black (his original was closer to either white or "arab", people claimed black because of the in game textures on his fingures). Syndra is absolutely Asian, and Karma is a dark skined Asian.
Lucian is currently the only black champion as far as I am aware.
Ionia is the Runeterra's equivalent to Asia.
