Everybody Arts!

Hey everyone!

Welcome to the Story & Art board!

I wanted to take some time to discuss this board from the standpoint of art. A lot of teams at Riot are touched by art in some way or another. There's a lot of disciplines working together all the time to create awesome content. Some of the components of the Art Team are:

  • Concept - Usually 2D artists in charge of the idea phase of an asset. Concept artists work on everything from character creation, to environment design, UI and illustration. They help flesh out our world and design the next new thing, or reinvent the old.

  • 3D Character - 3D artists who work in Zbrush, Maya and other programs to built and texture the character models you see in game. Whether they be champions, skins, creatures, or anything that's a life form, these guys make it into an actual thing.

  • 3D Environment - 3D artists who make our maps in which our characters live in. They use the same tools as character artists to build the world that the game is played in. They set the stage for our characters to stand on.

  • Animation - Animators bring static objects to life. Anything that has to move is moved by them. Characters that run, creatures who hop, structures that crumble. If it moves, our animators made it do so.

  • VFX - Visual Effects Artists, sometimes referred to as Particle Artists, are responsible for our effects in the game. Whether they come from a character, a prop, a creature, or an item. VFX artists make the spells fly.

  • Motion Graphics - MoGraph artists bring our login screens to life. They make our mana bars bubble, our logos move and generally make a ton of awesome. They weave spells which I still don't understand to move 2D assets and make them live.

  • LOTS OF OTHER ARTISTS - We never want to leave anyone out, but we have a ton of amazing people who work in the Art Team, and I may be forgetting some. Hopefully they'll come smack me on the back of the head if I forget them.

For art discussions in this board, here's what we'd like to do! Generally this is a place where we'd like to host discussions about art in League of Legends. This means that this is the place to discuss such things as, but not limited to:

Character design: How our champions, skins, creatures or other characters look and feel.

Art process: How we go about designing, creating and bringing to life the things you see in League of Legends.

Feedback: You letting us know what you think, and us letting you know why we do the things we do. A two-way street for us to jam.

Those are just a few topics that can be encompassed in this board. If you want to know how we make art, this is the place to find out!! If you notice a mistake, feel passionate about a direction we've taken, or just want to discuss art in general, here's your place! Promoting a respectful and engaging place for our artists to post and our players to ask, discuss, or just hang out.

As a side note, skin and champion concepts should be posted elsewhere on the Boards. We love your art and ideas; however, please share them on the Skins & Champion Concepts board!

With all that said, welcome!

This board is going to be much better than just sending you carrier pigeons.

Well, first of all, congratulations for the awesome artists of League of Legends, I'm an artist too (but mostly for hobby) and when I see a new art for this game, it's always very gorgerous, I wish I could draw like that too XD

Now, I want to suggest some characters designs that is missing in League of Legends, you already have two oriental swordman archetype! here we go:

  • Old lady
  • Harpie
  • A boy (Amumu doesn't count)
  • Quadrupede (more animal like, Hecarim doesn't count)
  • Manatee with a spatula
  • Bastet
  • Someone with a sheep cannon
  • Witch doctor
  • A real doctor
  • A shark man
  • Banshee

I don't know if there's anyone else who feels this way, but I would like to propose that Sivir Sivir gets a new title, in light of her new lore. I have always felt for the longest time that "Battle Mistress" is honestly the most boring champion title out of the whole cast, and that it literally says nothing about her other than "I'm a woman and I fight". But since her VU and her new story hotness, I think she ought to have a title matching the other Shuriman champions like "Chaser of the Sands" or something.

Anyone else feel this way?

Finally a board that combines my two favorite things in a game: story and art ^_^

I think riot is doing a great job with the splash art updates but.. they are so cool it makes you disappointed when you play the in game champ for example.. shyvana looks like a gundam halfdragon its really awesome but in game the detail is not there its two different champions. Orianna looks incredible in her splash art but in game her head is too big and she looks completely different.. I think the direction your taking the art is very good for the future of the game but some of the ingame changes that are coming arnt so good.. for example why are the in game champions getting a nerf on there visuals.. all the texture rebalances look like your taking a step backwards. the game is gonna look like a smash brothers game instead of a game based on war.. I think the idea is right but the level of detail that is being removed is to much.. the champions look better but bare. each champion needs to stand out as a hero worth being in the game and worth being some persons favorite champion that they spam during games there number one. This means a balanced roster like you guys do with nerfs and buffs AND visuals worth of comic book art. shyvana must look like the shyvana splash art people, its way too cool for a art junkie like me not to notice.

But who made the visuals for the Shurima videos? :) I still can't get over how perfect these looked. I watched the videos over and over again in fullscreen HD to make myself a new desktop wallpaper. :D

I thought it was very well thought, it felt like an old legend was told (and screw these guys on reddit who think Nasus doesn't know how to speak- i loved how it sounded) and the visuals were absolutely perfect for this - it was like some historical murals/mosaics/... except way better (and the camera movements, and the lighting effects... yeah, I could talk about how much i loved it for hours).

Well. All this to say that Riot artists, you're doing a very, very good job.

Also, ever since I started playing LoL (one year now) I've been trying to find the names of Riot artists (to find more blogs/galleries to please my eyes) but most of the times, they're not credited and I only know who they are when they post the work they did for Riot on their website. Would that be possible to know who painted x splash once it's released? :)

I like this board, its gonna be nice to go to an open forum place where summoners can talk to rioters about how their favorite characters/environments are created. And, this isn't going to be a champion creation type forum is it? Where people are posting champion + skin ideas all over town, not that that is bad. I am just wondering.

I'm going to say that I really love the new look of the updated rift, but there is something I view as an issue. The dragon looks like less of a dragon and more like a "magma griffon" in terms of color scheme and design. The torso is the area I am most concerned with, seeing as it looks similar to the body of a lion and less of what I interpret as a flying reptilian monster with the ability to shoot flames. TLDR: more scales = more dragon IMO

Is there any special reason for Jinx not to have her famous bullet necklace in 3D game modeling?

DadJokeCinema9/27/2014, 7:08:52 PM1 votes

For 3D character art, do the artists begin in ZBrush then push down to the lower-poly game model? If so, does that mean there are higher detail source models floating around as a base for future designs/skins?

Ironstylus. I love playing league of legends and I like the characters, and i also like the huge playmats that can be used for a gaming room, i was wondering if i could draw some of my favorite league characters and have them put on a playmat so i can use it as a giant mouse pad/card playing area. I know that for the inked playmats I have to ask the people who originally made the characters if it is okay to use them. So please Ironstylus, I would love to make a Leona/Quinn playmat for my computer/cardplaying table. May I have your/Riots permission?

Cool Board!

I wanted to tell you guys that I absolutely love the new Summoners Rift art and I 'm super exited for what's still to come and all the talk about the updated map and it's story. So this could be the right board to post my thoughts on it!

I got to test the updated map on the PBE, it is amazing how beautiful it is and the unique atmosphere it brings. Way to go!

However, there is one thing that I don't like about the current map on the PBE and it may sound weird, but it is the flowers in the lanes. There are some oddly shaped blue flowers everywhere on the three lanes and I personally think these flowers could be done better. I think they look weird because of the flower art, textures and the long peduncles. I just feel they don't compete with the other very nice textures of the map an that makes me sad, I know you can deliver better quality

On the contrary, I think that the flowers in the jungles are a very good example of how good looking flowers should be like, take a look for yourself!

I've added an example of the flowers i'm criticizing down below. Thanks for the hard work and for hearing the community like you do Riot.

Cheers.

What is the process for coming up with a Champion? Is that strictly up to designers, or do other departments have equal say?

EDIT: In terms of actual green-lighting of a Champion, not necessarily a finalized Champion's direction.

Why remove the ghosts from SR update map? I have yet to play, but already miss them 😞

Gixia9/23/2014, 12:01:49 AM1 votes

Grah, why you make this board now? I've spent the last week going 'man, I wish there was a board for story/art, I've got a lot to say about both right now', but had nowhere to put it. Now you finally make this board aaaand... I have to go to work so I have no time to say anything. D:

Question: During the Pentakill event, the only champion to not receive texture upgrades was Yorick . IS this because of the rework? I ask because it would have been nice to get the new logo on his back.

Feznet9/23/2014, 2:36:57 PM1 votes

Probably been asked before, but doing game art is something I've taken an interest in. I used to do art years ago, but stopped(and I kick myself every day for it.) What would you say are important skills and can you provide any resources?

Hey IronStylus!

Could you please find out who made the new Caitlyn splash? Caitlyn

I 3Dmodel as a hobby, and I'd love to make a render of that awesome rifle she has on the new splash art.

I really like to stick to canon so I'd like to ask the artist how does the whole gun look like, since her leg and arm obscure part of the gun in the splash. Maybe there's a sketch somewhere?

Parrot pls.
