Urgot: Identities and Scuttles

(Before I begin I'd like to preface that I haven't yet played on any preseason goodies so I don't quite know what state our Lord and Scuttler will be in. In addition I'm not going to crunch numbers and get into the nitty-gritty details of the game (I'll leave that to the qualified Optometrists out there), but rather talk about themes and identities of Urgot.)

Hi. I like Urgot. A lot.

<Urgot 3

Now that we have that out of the way, I'd like to talk about Urgot. This latest patch brought a little bit of attention to Urgot, so I thought I'd share some ideas brewing in my head about who/what he is.

#Urgot Currently To begin, what is Urgot technically classified as? Well technically he is a primary Marksman and secondary Fighter. In all actuality he is a FighterTankAssassinCasterSeigeDuelestZoidbergPoke.... thing. What is NOT, however, is a Marksman (or at least right now).

But wait he's ranged AD! That's... that's... Marks..man....

Honestly, Urgot's Range and Missile Speed is just too darn low to really keep par with other Marksmen. Honestly, it feels like you take a drop in DPS if you choose to auto over casting Acid Hunter (his Q), and Marksman are kind of defined by there reliance on Auto Attacking. So what is he then? Well let's take a look at a couple of champs he is quite similar too.

Jayce Cassiopeia

Urgot is like this weird lovechild of Jayce and Cassiopeia (there's a fun image in your brain). On average, Jayce and Urgot build really similar. Both are spam happy tear users who rip armor and look damn sexy. He also plays a lot like Cass in the fact that you land one spell to then spam another. This is a key concept I think be focused on, but we can touch back on that later.

So, let's refine that Urgot classification a bit. Urgot is a Fighter and AD Caster. He can build a damage/beef mixture or go full glass cannon. Most Urgot games you see saw a mixture of Muramana, Frozen Heart, Black Cleaver, Last Whisper, etc. Sound like Jayce at all?

Alright, we've got a super baseline definition of Urgot currently in terms of the game, but what about Urgot his abilities?

#EWQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

I originally picked up Urgot to troll my friends with (because we love each other) but actually fell in love with his kit, so lets go over it. Like I said I won't get into number crunching but rather giving a general explanation of the gameplay involved with it.

Passive: Zaun-Touched Bolt Augmenter

  • This is where the frustration comes when playing against Urgot. Basic Attacks and Acid Hunters reduce the damage of the target by 15%
  • As much as I love dueling people who don't know about this ability, it's invisible power and not really healthy for the game.

We are going to talk about the next 3 together since they all work off one another.

Q: Acid Hunter - Fires a Skillshot Missile W: Terror Capacitor - Gives Urgot a shield that cause Basic Attacks and Acid Hunters to Slow E: Noxian Corrosive Charge - Skillshot that causes targets in an area to have reduced armor and allow Acid Hunters to lock on to their target.

These 3 abilities are Urgot's bread and butter. At 40% CDR (Which you want on Urgot) you are able to fire a Q just about every second. If you land an E, you have this SUPER LONG RANGE locked on Q that you just unload on your enemy. If you pop W during the duration, you also get a slow. Don't get hit by E.

R: Hyper-Kinetic Position Reverser

  • This is the weird, albeit extremely fun, one. Urgot channels for a bit then switches places with a target (locking them down in the process). The range on this gets larger each point, but really its great when people think they can dive you under tower. Don't dive Urgot.

Well, from the sounds of this he is a Seige/Poke Champion then, not a fighter. Well.... he kind of is too.

Let's move on to how he fits into the world of lore.

#Scuttle Stories

TL:DR of Urgot's lore - Was a total BAMF but his body was getting old. They made him High Executioner and gave him cool Robit augments. Capture J4 but Garen cut him in half and he died. Brought back to life 3 days later as Urgod and seeks revenge on Garen.

Alright, this is where Urgot could really be flushed out. Urgot hates Garen. Garen is a Juggernaut. Urgot hates.... Juggernauts?

When you think about it he already kind of does. Urgot has super long range poke with slows, this allows him to kite big beefy Juggernauts. Juggernauts are all about sticking to you like syrup on you hands (even though you washed like 5 times already, yet your hands are still sticky). Urgot can kind of lock down Juggernauts allowing his team to just avoid them for the time being. He also SHREDS armor so much that the level of penetration is illegal in some states.

THIS is where I think we can start fixing Urgot. With my his hatred of Garen Juggernauts!

#"We can rebuild him. We have the techmaturgy."

Now that I have kind of homed in on WHAT I think Urgot should be (the Anti-Juggernaut) I will go over my crackpot ideas for how to accomplish that.

Firstly, we take Urgot out of the duo lane. I'm sorry, but he runs better in a 1v1 scenario (I still love you Supports <3). We also focus on his ability to be an artillery machine (especially since Kog became the machine gunner). His armor shredding, long range poking, FU Garen style brings all the lady Scuttles to the yard.

Now let's look at abilities.

What do we keep:

  • QWE

The interaction of these 3 items are key making what Urgot is good at great. This will also help focus on his long range, Juggernaut hating attitude. Obviously some number crunching can be done to tone these up a bit, but I feel the core concepts behind them are good.

What do we get rid of:

  • Passive

This just doesn't belong in the game anymore. There may have once been a time for it, but it is gone.

I am not really sure what I would put here in it's place. I feel like something doubling down on Armor Pen might be good for him. This one is really for those that get paid to do this.

What do we change:

  • R

I've got a crazy idea for an R change. Instead of switching places with the target it instead locks them (and Urgot, like it currently does) down for a bit, essentially taking the target out of the fight. It would be kind of like Nami Bubble. It would punish the enemy for just running haphazardly at your team. You could either have your 4 teammates attack the locked-down target, or go for the rest of the team.

No one will use this on Juggernauts! This will just be used on carries and assassins!

Oh yeah, you are right, so I had another crazy idea. It would scale (in someway, once again above my pay scale) with the enemy's resistances. We don't have an ability that scales with enemy resistances do we? Trundle steals some but that's about it.

This would kind of make Urgot like a ranged alternative to Trundle. Maybe it would kill him, I'm not sure. Obviously these two ideas are not perfect nor do they really work together. These are just a couple crazy ideas I had to get the conversation going.

I love Urgot, I really do. I heard he was slated for a Sion level rework and that makes me unbelievably sad. He needs a tune-up, not a rework. Hopefully some kind fellow passes this onto the right kind of Rioter and maybe some ideas get brewing because of it.

Just remember: "Eternal life, endless SCUTTLES!"

Perhaps the R locks both he and the target in place, both still able to attack and cast (non-movement related spells), and gives Urgot a percent of the target's resistances? That way it enforces the EQQQQQQQQ spam and begs the question whether you use the spell to lock down squishies or catch escaping enemies. Would that work?
