[CHAMPION IDEA] Coin, the memory seeker

##To understand Coin, you must understand why he was conceptualized

It was around a year ago that my favorite champion, Jolly Sailor Gangplank was slaughtered by Riot, and from the torn up pieces of his body, Riot stitched him back into the despicable thing he is today. The change was met with many happy people, Gangplank finally had a defined roll. However, there were some who ardently opposed the idea of reworking Gangplank, I was one of them. What was it about gangplank that I missed? For starters, he used to be a genuinely funny champion that you could project your own piratey ideas onto. Anyone remember the scene in Pirates of the Carribean: The Black Pearl, where Jack Sparrow escapes from the entire East-Indian trading company post after being arrested? Well, eating an orange and spamming old GP's movement steroid used to feel a lot like that. Can it still be done today? Sure, you just have to place a barrel as far away and smack it when you reach it, but it just doesn't feel the same.

But, what was changed?

For starters, GP lost his light-hearted quotes. To list a few:

  • "Avast, me hearties!"
  • Yo ho ho, and a bottle of... rum!"
  • Wanna know why me Roger is so Jolly? Heheheh..."

The GP rework definitely made him have more personality, but I personally think that Riot took it in the wrong way. Gone are the funny days, now Gangplank is a champion which takes a lot of mechanical skill to play to his fullest, and he's a buzzkill whenever you hear his quotes. However, now it would be wasteful to completely rework GP just to satisfy a few, after all, a huge amount of work was put into the current version. so instead, here I present Coin.

##Background

Who is Coin? If you asked Coin, even he wouldn't know, his oldest memory came from the day he washed up on the shorelines of Bilgewater on top of a flimsy board. Kicked aside with his only possession ransacked by a few lowlifes, Coin could tell you all about the day he entered the madness that is Bilgewater, heck, he could even give you a full guide on how to adapt to the unusual traditions and the crude culture of Bilgewater, and even how to earn a tidy profit in the city of thieves and hooligans. However, what Coin can't tell you is what it is about himself that doesn't feel right in a place such as Bilgewater. Bilgewater is a glum city, the most common past time of its denizens is to envy the next richest person. Coin knows he can't be like that, he's more concerned about figuring out where he came from than plundering a passing merchant ship. Don't make the mistake of assuming he won't swipe your necklace and put your hand between a table and the blade of his dagger however, after all, the only life he knows is the Bilgewater life.

##Abilities

Coin is a ranged champion. He only uses one side arm, after all, he needs to be evasive if he wants to survive.

Passive: (I originally had 1 has his passive, but I just realised how hard it would be to implement it in a balanced way. I still like it though, but I think in reality, he'd probably get to have passive 2).

  1. Coin's abilities benefit from being used. The more he uses his abilities, the more he begins to remember about how he came to know these abilities. (Remember, he had to survive in Bilgewater. Whatever tricks he used then were from instinct), and the stronger they get.
  2. Upon being hit by a basic attack, Coin gains bonus movement speed for x seconds(Ergo he'd be slow to reach the fight, after all, why would he be in any rush to get to the danger? Once you get into a fight with Coin though, be aware that he'll be much better at dodging your skill shots, and he'll be more keen to run from you)

Q: Coin's draws out his sword, causing his next basic attack to be empowered. As well, his attack will slow the hit enemy. The attack can crit and apply other on-hit effects (I thought this would be an interesting switch up on the norm. Many melee champs get a ranged ability, but how many ranged champions get a melee ability [Gnar doesn't count]? Coin would have to be pretty annoyed to get up and personal, and so he'd understandably be a tad more violent in his forthcomings.)

W: Passive: Coin gains x gold upon hitting an enemy with Q, E, or R. This passive refreshes every 6/5/4/3/2 seconds. (He's both a fighter and a thief! He knows that fighting distracts the enemy. Personally, I'd rather have it so he could steal gold, but that might be a bit broken. This passive isn't reduced by CDR). Active: Coin drinks from his favorite canister of rum (APPLE JUICE! I SWEAR IT'S APPLE JUICE) and is now in a drunken rage. He gains 5/10/15/20/25 (+10% bonus AD) physical damage on his basic attacks. Costs x mana per second it's toggled. (I liked how GP eats an orange and heals himself, but his orange is his trademark on the rift. So, I decided to move as far away from that as possible).

E: End of the world: Coin's not the master of Bilgewater, and he's run amok with one of the gangs. Now, in response, there's a trailing fire of cannon balls following behind him for 3 seconds, if an enemy is unlucky enough to be behind Coin when one of the cannon ball hits, they'll take 30/60/90/120/150 (+30% AP) damage (and be slowed?). (I like the theme of something raining from the sky, but the circle and a bunch of metal falling from the sky was a bit overdone with 2 champs basically having the same ability. So, I decided to put a spin on it and make it something that follows him at a distance, like Singed. This makes Coin a bit more mechanically trickier, but it also rewards Coin players who can evade the enemy.)

R: Coin remembers who he was before he washed up on a raggedy board, and boy is he pissed. Bilgewater was an awful experience compared to his old life, and now Coin's ready to brawl, and the brawl better be ready for him! Coin loses the gun, but gains +15/30/45 movement speed, +20/35/50 (+15% AD) Attack Damage, and +10/25/40 bonus armor and mr for 15 seconds. (I really liked the idea of Coin being on one hand a guy who hates fighting and would rather not damage his tricorne, and on the other, a guy who's embittered by his time in Bilgewater. The fact that he remembers that he was maybe an ex-noble who barely survived an assassination attempt only to land up in a place like Bilgewater sounds fun, and of course he'd want to take his anger out on someone for his life turning out the way it has. And of course, it's more resounding to smash your fist onto someone's nose as opposed to shooting someone's thigh!)

##Sample quotes

While attacking: "Y'arghh, now we'll see who'll be forgetting" While running behind an enemy: "Yohohoho, you can run, but ye can't hide yar har har" While getting chased by an enemy: "You can chase, but ye won't catch" Upon taking damage from an enemy (refreshes every 15 seconds so it's not annoying as heck): "Y'arghh!!"

##Coin's relation with other champions

Gangplank: Coin wasn't even a player in the events that would orchestrate Gangplank's downfall, but he was there in Bilgewater when it happened. He's aware of how cruel Gangplank is, and personally looks down on him for abandoning the romanticized view of the pirates life and choosing to be incredibly cruel instead. Possible quote: "You had the potential to be something greater." "You should've stayed in the bottom of the harbor, it's a better home for you."

Miss Fortune: Coin's seen her a few times, and he's love struck. However, he has no clue of her roll in taking down Gangplank and simply sees her as one of the better pirate captains to look up to. Possible quote: "Hello me heartie, yar har har" (The laugh is to be kind of nervous in a love-struck way. I'm well aware that this was one of Gangplank's quotes, but nowhere in the rule book does it say you can't share a champion's quote) Upon attacking MF: "Don't worry about the pain too much, you'll realize it's called heartburn, yar har har"

Fizz: Coin doesn't know too much about him, but he has heard of him. Possible quote: "YOU'RE Fizz? Me thinks you'd be bigger"

Nautilus: Coin can emphasize with Nautilus because the titan doesn't remember who he was before he put on the diving suit. Nautilus isn't shown to be a hostile figure to people outside of his former crew, so I think it'd be reasonable to assume that Coin's able to strike up some words for Nautilus. Possible quote: "Don't worry ol' pal. One of these days, we'll remember who we were" (He ditches the pirate-talk for this because he knows that he isn't of Bilgewater. He's been faking his voice the entire time).

Illaoi: He's heard the legends of the lady of the Serpent isles, and during his rag-tag adventures, he's made sure to steer well clear of them just in case. Thus, I think Coin would be in a bit of awe to discover that she's real, and also a bit pleasantly surprised to know that he didn't waste his time going out of the way during his adventures. Possible quote: "The legends be true...." "Well, I'd be damned..."

I'm not sure if I'm going to add anything more to the champion concept for now. I don't think Riot has ever used a concept to make a champion, so I doubt we'll ever get to meet Coin on the rift. But, it was fun creating this guy, and I hope that at least his personality is put onto the next champion from Bilgewater :)
