Lore - In life, the lovely Melinae was a researcher. She would spend days poring over numerous tomes and repositories of knowledge, seeking the next great discovery that might help aid the peoples of Runeterra. Of all the subjects she studied, none more intrigued her than the mysteries surrounding the Shadow Isles. Most of her peers felt she should have spent her time on more concrete fields, but that only drove Melinae into her research even further. Some attributed this fervor to the fact that very little is known about the little band of islands sitting to the northwest of Valoran, and beyond that, few researchers ever went, fearing what might happen to them if they did. What little information there was resided within secondhand accounts of secondhand accounts from very old tomes. One evening, while going through a journal, she discovered an entry from a man claiming to be a 'former resident' of the Isles. The man made mention of a weapon, beautifully crafted, and which 'wielded power over life and death'. Feeling that such an artifact would be a great boon to further her research, she began her planning. So it was that Melinae prepared a solo expedition, and with the extreme protest of many of her colleagues at her back, chartered a boat to the Isles. Upon reaching the shore, the captain of the vessel turned back out to sea, and told her he would return for her in three days' time.
While gripped with some trepidation, the thought of finding the item she sought gave her the courage to disembark and head inland. She did not know exactly where this artifact would be found, and the only clues were from the journal entry. According to it, there was a village that had once stood on the largest island, and that the blade rested somewhere near its center, used for various ceremonies and the like.
The first day of searching was uneventful, though Melinae felt as though she were being watched the entire time. It was an eerie feeling, surrounded by unfamiliar landscapes and the ethereal qualities she had been told the Shadow Isles possessed. The second day, she went from her campsite and searched a bit farther than the previous day, but still she found very little. No evidence of any sort of habitation at all. Strangely, the feeling of being watched was even more potent than the day before, and she could swear she was starting to hear a lilting, almost somber tune being carried through the air. She simply attributed it to her imagination running wild, and prepared herself for the last day before she would have to return to the Institute.
The third day began very differently from the previous two. As she awoke, the tune she could swear she heard was even louder, and much more pronounced. It was also a rather comforting sound. She wondered where it might be coming from, and set out to find the source of this bizarre melody in a sea of quiet and solitude. Her pace was quickened, and she could hear the music grow louder and louder as she seemed to approach its source. After trekking most of the morning and afternoon, she came across a small vale that she had missed the two days previous. Down at the bottom were what appeared to be the ruins of a small settlement. A great feeling of satisfaction went through Melinae as she approached it. She had found it, and now all she needed do was find the weapon.
It didn't take long to find. Upon reaching the edge of the settlement, the lay of the road almost immediately guided her to the center, where a giant sword rested within a great stone slab. As she moved toward it, the song she had been hearing all day became even stronger, even more beauteous in its complexities. Before she realized it, she stood over the sword, poised to take it from its stone prison. A small voice at the back of her mind warned her of the danger of not preparing for some sort of curse or trap, but she paid it no mind as her fingers wrapped around the grip.
Immediately, pain swam through her arm, and she could feel something happening as the hole where the blade rested coursed and arced with energy. Something possessed her to place both hands on the weapon, pulling even harder to pull it free, her entire body screaming at her to stop. Before long, it wasn't her own mind screaming, either. She saw, dimly, the souls of the dead flowing around her, telling her to let the blade be. But it was too late. A few seconds later, Melinae lost consciousness, the last time her soul would be her own.
The captain of the vessel Melinae had charted returned for her, just as he had said he would. But upon his arrival, the girl he was here to pick up was nowhere to be seen. He scanned up and down the misty shore, but saw no trace of her. Then a song began to ring through the air, a curious melody, and his gaze was drawn to the treeline, just at the edge of the beach. It was there he saw her. A woman resembling the one he had left, but clad in armor, wielding a large executioner's sword, and appearing like death itself, a cadre of horrifying spirits flanking her along the bank to either side. Her eyes met his, and he grew fearful. The moment stretched on for an eternity, until at last the woman simply turned and walked back inland. Not wishing to stay any longer, the captain fled the Isles, taking his story back with him...
Quotes
Before getting into the quotes, I figure I should mention how I envision this character speaking. There are two personalities present, Melinae and Sorrow. Most of the time, Sorrow is the one speaking through Melinae, with Melinae's voice being modulated over with a sort of ethereal tone. Think something along the lines of the female altar from Twisted Treeline and that's the idea.
On Selection - "We are here to serve." Joke - "We think it's time to do a head count." Joke - (Alternating between Melinae and Sorrow, Melinae first) "Knock knock." "Who's there?" "Freedom?" "HahahahaHAHAHA." Taunt - "Careful now, you wouldn't want to lose your head." Taunt - "We will fall upon you as a blade to the neck." Taunt (Against enemy Thresh) - "You would disrupt the natural order for your own gain, Thresh?" Taunt (Against enemy Thresh) - "Return all that you have stolen from us!"
(More to come soon. Hope you enjoy the concept!)
