As one of the few people who actually own the skin, and consider it one of my favorites even after all these years... let me just say this VU is terrible.
It doesn't even look like rust, it looks like mud or clay. He doesn't look like he's made of metal, he looks like he's made of ceramic tiles or something. sigh
I don't think it ever looked rusty, honestly. They can do better than this, 100%, but it wasn't good then either.

Riot has expressly said these aren't solid visual updates
they're just tweaking colors and shaders and such to make them more in tune with the new colors in the Summoner's Rift update

Well to be fair the old one doesn't look rusty either, it just looks like someone took the original texture in to photoshop and turned the red saturation up, the brightness down, then added a dust and scratches filter.
And with how advance Riots modeling department was back then, that's very likely exactly what happened. :P
I'm personally a big fan of his new texture update, and i find rusty blitzcrank better than before.
Rusty Blitzcrank in general is just a shitty skin and isn't a sign of anything but status. Rusty Blitzcrank is literally the simplest skin of all time, and you can even just make an illusion of having rusty blitzcrank by turning down the brightness on your monitor.
If you lowered the lighting, you could get old Rusty Blitzcrank. If you lower the lighting, you can get new Rusty Blitzcrank.
Wut.
I also own the skin since beta. And I am also upset that the color is changed. It is not about whether its a good skin or not, it means something to those of us that were silly enough to buy it cause we love the champ so much. I am with you mate....change it back.

Old Rusty Skin was better, it doesn't have to exactly be right on to look rusty, but its damn well near close to looking Rusty as far as the new one goes. The new model makes him look like he's made of bloody leather for crying out loud.
