The rules regarding player submissions and potential Riot implementation
This has always been a topic I have had questions about for a long while; I've scoured the boards and the old forums looking for some information, but it usually amounts to tidbits like one-off red posts or hearsay from players. I think it would be beneficial if there was a sticky thread giving Riot's official stance on player-suggestions and how far they're willing (or allowed) to go with them.
If we are being honest here, when someone like myself creates a thread detailing his/her idea for a skin, or an idea for a new champion, could we ever honestly hope to potentially see this idea implemented into League of Legends, or is "oh, that's pretty cool" the legal/logistical extent that Riot can go, know what I mean?
I will be the first to admit that my understanding of rules/laws is less than it could/should be, and I'm certainly not a lawyer. However I'm sure there exists a worry that, legally, Riot cannot utilize our ideas without risking a controversy over ownership and revenue. The potential problem being that "I came up with RAWR the BARbarian and now Riot used it; where's my money?! sue sue sue $ $ $" would be a rather annoying situation to deal with (to put it lightly).
So where am I going with this? Other than the requested sticky about the rules, that is.
If this scenario holds to be true (and, again, I'm not entirely sure lol), then I wonder if we could create some kind of compromise, where we as the submitters could present our ideas with a real possibility of seeing them inside this beloved game, and where Riot could look at these ideas without the fear that they were created by someone looking to create a big stink to try and swipe some settlement money. My idea for this would be a separate additional Skin/Idea suggestion board, specifically designed for us to present our submissions with a 100% acknowledgement and acceptance that we are revoking our ownership of this idea in exchange for its potential inclusion. By having us agree to this deal beforehand, you (Riot) would (hopefully) be legally protected from people looking to take advantage of this situation. At the same time, posted ideas to that board would be regulated at least to some extent for thoroughness and clarity; less "I want a giraffe champ riot plz!" and more "this is 'Gir Affe, Lord of the Safari'. This is his intended role, here are his abilities, and I'll follow it up with item considerations and suggested strategies to play as (and against) this character."
I think the bare minimum we (the players) would want is at least a name-drop if this ever became true: "We're excited to introduce 'Gir Affe, Lord of the Safari', inspired by player Linkblade91! :D". The character or skin being in the game would be, at least for me, a wonderful boon as is, but a name-drop could show others "hey, look what a fellow player came up with!", and perhaps encourage more cool stuff from the community.
