Kayn dies during w but it's a clone?

So i was in a custom just hsing kayns w in shadow assassin with the skin and I noticed it wasn't always a shadow that uses the w. Sometimes kayn (a clone) shows up and does. This is really interesting and I would like to understand why it does this
