Videl, Taboo Knowledge

Hi guys! This is my first ever champion concept, so let me know what you think! I don't really have much experience working on balancing things in games like this, so the raw numbers for base damages and cooldowns and such might be a bit off. And please give me your feedback! Unfortunately I am not a good artist so I don't have any art to go along with the champ, but hopefully the description is enough to get a decent image of her in your head.

Lore: If you ask the scientists at Piltover's leading medical research facility about the young woman named Videl, they will tell you that it was such a tragedy. Truly regretful. Rarely did once see a young mind so insightful, so dedicated to knowledge. But she just didn't know when to quit, and went too far in seeking the essence of life itself. To prevent inevitable tragedy, they were forced to revoke her license and strip her of her funding. Then they might ask if you have heard of her recently, and if so how is she doing? If you ask the citizens of Zaun about the young woman named Videl, you will get a very different answer. After her license was revoked, she descended to the undercity, determined to continue her research at any cost. Her findings will save millions, she thought, and the ends will justify the means. Unfortunately, willing subjects are hard to come by -- so she found a way to use unwilling ones. She created a new device, one that could extract and inject the essence of life equally well, and began experimenting.

Description: Videl is a young woman, probably about in her early twenties -- old enough to be well-educated, but young enough to still be stubbornly idealistic and willing to do terrible things for the sake of her otherwise well-intentioned goals. She has brown hair that she wears up in a bun and has a fair skin and blue eyes. She wears a blue jumpsuit under a battered white lab coat that she lets hang open. On her back is her device, which is a silvery metal cube with a cylindrical glass tank coming out of the top of it to rest behind her head. This tank is partially filled with electric blue fluid, and becomes fuller or emptier as Videl gains and loses essence, respectively. Each side of the cube has three tubes coming out of it. Two of the tubes are clear and not attached to anything on the other end and are instead hooked onto the lab coat by her waist. The third tube is glowing -- neon green on the left side and neon purple on the right -- and each of those tubes is attached to a pistol, which she uses as her weapons. The glowing tube goes into the bottom of the pistols' stock, and on the inward facing side of the pistol there is an attachment point for another tube. When Videl basic attacks, her attacks appear to be made of goop, and glow differently depending on which gun she used, green for left and purple for right. She uses the left pistol when targeting allies, and the right pistol when targeting enemies.

Intended Role: Support/ADC

Videl should work best as a support. I put her second role as ADC because even though she scales with AP the biggest key to her effectiveness is playing with a lane partner, so theoretically you could run her as a mage-like botlane with a higher damage support and it could work out fairly well.

Base Stats: (+ Per Level) HP: 570.48 (+98) HP Regen: 7 (+0.55) AD: 50 (+3) AS: 0.656 (+3%) Armor: 31 (+4) MR: 30 (+0.5) Movement Speed: 335 Range: 550

These are the part of the kit where I know the least about their impact on how the champion will feel to play, because other than range I don't really know what the numbers are for a champion when I play them. So I mostly took these numbers from the numbers on existing champions that felt a bit like I wanted Videl to feel, and I don't feel particularly confident about them as a result. So definitely tell me if I'm on the right track with them if you know more than I do!

Kit: The base idea with Videl's kit is to have a high-skill, basic-attack-based support that gets decent damage and good healing but requires smart positioning and resource management to succeed with. The second biggest thing about her kit for me is her resource bar (detailed in the first part of her passive) which is unique among League champions in that it doesn't start either full or empty, but instead halfway, and gives both benefits and drawbacks at every amount other than exactly half.

Passive: Part 1: Essence Tank Videl has a resource called Essence. She can have from 0 to 100 Essence, and this number cannot be modified. Whenever she starts the game or respawns, she has exactly 50 Essence. Damaging enemy minions, pets, and non-epic monsters will grant Videl 1 Essence. Similarly, healing allied minions and pets will drain 1 Essence. Damaging enemy champions or epic monsters grants 5-20 Essence, depending on how much Essence Videl currently has: when at 0-30 Essence, Videl will gain 20; when at 31-50, Videl will gain 15; when at 51-70, Videl will gain 10; and when at 71-100, Videl will gain 5. Similarly, healing allied champions will drain 5-20 Essence, depending Videl's current Essence: she loses 5 Essence when at 0-30, 10 at 31-50, 15 at 51-70, and 20 at 71-100. The effectiveness of Videl's healing is equal to twice her current percent of Essence, from 200% at 100 Essence to a minimum of 5% at 2 or less Essence. Similarly, the effectiveness of Videl's bonus damage (any damage stemming from bonus AD or AP) is equal to twice her current percent of missing Essence, from 200% at 0 Essence to a minimum of 5% at 98 or more Essence.

Part 2: Friendly Fire Videl may target allied units with her basic attacks. When she does, rather than dealing damage, she heals the target for 6/12/18/24/30/36/42/48/54/60/66/72/78/84/90/96/102/108 (+20% Ability Power) Hit Points.

Videl's passive has two parts, and the first part seems very long, but that's because it has to explain the functionality of Videl's new resource: Essence. Essence is very unique, and as you can see if can have a big impact if utilized properly. However, because of how quickly you drop out of the zones of higher effect and how slowly you get to those zones, it should keep Videl players from spamming super powerful heals or massive chunks of damage, since she essentially needs to "charge up" those heals or damage chunks by spending quite a while being relatively ineffective. The second part of her passive allows her to use basic attacks to heal, which is unique among League's champions and (hopefully) balanced by the fact even though it is resourceless healing, if you only use it for healing or even mostly use it for healing your healing will be very subpar. Furthermore, she cannot use her main healing source to heal herself, meaning that even though she needs to be in range to auto her enemies to charge up the healing, she needs to play very carefully and have good positioning so that she does not get caught and killed in the process.

Q: Tethers of Vitality Cooldown: 10/9/8/7/6 seconds Videl resets her basic attack timer and empowers her next basic attack. When Targeting Ally: Videl's empowered attack heals for an additional 20/40/60/80/100 (+20% Ability Power) Hit Points and attaches a tether to the target. This tether lasts for up to three seconds or until Videl and the target are further away from each other than Videl's current basic attack range. While the tether is attached, it heals the target for 5/10/15/20/25 (+5% Ability Power) every half-second, for a maximum of 30/60/90/120/150 (+30% Ability Power) Hit Points. The initial heal happens simultaneously with Videl's passive healing from Friendly Fire, and only counts once when draining Essence; however, each tick of healing from the tether counts as a separate instance of healing for draining Essence.
When Targeting Enemy: VIdel's empowered attack does bonus magic damage equal to 20/40/60/80/100 (+20% Ability Power) and attaches a tether to the target. This tether lasts for up to three seconds or until Videl and the target are further away from each other than Videl's current basic attack range. While the tether is attached, it deals 5/10/15/20/25 (+5% Ability Power) magic damage to the target every half-second, for a maximum of 30/60/90/120/150 (+30% Ability Power) magic damage. The initial damage happens simultaneously with Videl's basic attack, and only counts once when gaining Essence; however, each tick of damage from the tether counts as a separate instance of damage for gaining Essence.
Animation: Immediately upon casting Tethers of Vitality, Videl perfoms a short animation in which she reaches down and attaches one of her extra tubes to the additional tube port on each of her guns. When she makes the basic attack, the tether follows the attack projectile to the target and then sticks to the target. Meanwhile, she reaches to her waist with her other pistol and unhooks the extra tube.

As with most champions, Videl's Q is her most frequently used ability. It is certainly the fastest way to gain or lose Essence in her kit, and as such must be carefully played around with. There might even be cases where it is beneficial to Videl to try and break the tether early to avoid losing too much Essence, or avoid gaining too much if she wants to save some of her damage potential for abilities more impactful for the last 2 ticks of her tether. Also, the heal looks enormous, and if you keep in range it is a lot, but it is less than it looks at first glance because of how quickly and drastically it drains Videl's Essence -- it only takes 1 second of the tether being attached to drop below 50 Essence and having reduced healing, even if she manages to get all the way up to 100 Essence before using the ability, which is difficult and unlikely.

W: Essence Grenade Cooldown: 2 seconds Range: 600 Videl places a grenade at the target location. The grenade itself is only 75 units wide, but it has a trigger radius of 200 units. The grenade takes a moment to arm itself and will last on the ground for 2 minutes. When any champion, including Videl, walks within the trigger radius of an armed grenade, the grenade launches itself at the target in a straight line at that champion. The grenade detonates upon reaching the edge of its trigger radius or upon colliding with a unit, affecting all units within a small radius. Allied units within the blast radius are healed for 20/40/60/80/100 (+25% Ability Power) Hit Points and have their movement speed increased by 40% for 1.5 seconds, while enemy units within the blast radius take 40/80/120/160/200 (+50% Ability Power) magic damage and have their movement speed reduced by 40% for 1.5 seconds. Videl gains a grenade every 28/26/24/22/20 seconds and can store 1/1/2/2/3 at a time.

This ability is both Videl's only form of area of effect damage or healing and her only form of potential self-healing. It is not that creative of an ability, but no support currently in the game has traps of any kind (unless you count Bard's healing shrines) and while most traps offer some form of counterplay, none of those counterplay options involve dodging projectiles. It should be noted that while these traps are visible, they are not destructible, so the best way to defeat them is to trigger them knowingly and then dodge the grenade.

E: Focusing Brutality / Stunning Kindness Cooldown: 18/16/14/12/10 seconds Range: 750 This ability is a targeted, fast-moving projectile. It may only be cast on champions that are currently suffering from some form of Crowd Control. It may not be self-cast. When cast on allied champions, this ability is Focusing Brutality. When cast on enemy champions, this ability is Stunning Kindness. Focusing Brutality: Through her experiments, Videl has learned the focusing power of pain. Videl deals damage to the target allied champion equal to 10% of their current health, but cleanses them of all crowd control. Use of this ability will grant Videl Essence.
Stunning Kindness: After testing on many subjects, Videl knows that unexpected growth can lead to difficulty moving. Videl heals the target enemy champion for 10% of their current missing health but stuns them for 2 seconds unless they were already stunned, in which case it extends the duration of that stun by 1 second. Use of this ability drains Videl's Essence. Animation Note: When using this ability, Videl uses her right pistol (the purple one) to cast Focusing Brutality and her left pistol (the green one) to cast Stunning Kindness.

This ability (along with her dual passives) is really what makes Videl unique mechanically. In the entire game of League, there are only 4 cleanse mechanics, and only 1 of them (Mikael's Crucible) is a cleanse for your allies. I am honestly not sure if that is because cleanses are too strong to balance on a champion, or two weak to be of use, or what. I would guess the former reason, which is why Focusing Brutality also does damage (well that and because it makes it fit the theme better.) However, Videl is all about the balance of healing and damage for everyone, so we also have Stunning Kindness. I intended for Stunning Kindness to have a stun that felt long enough be satisfying to use, since she can only use it on people who are suffering from some sort of debuff already (such as the slow from her Essence Grenade, for example), but so long as to be unfun to play against like Morgana's Q can sometimes be. But in any case, this is the ability that (along with the passives) I am most looking forward to seeing feedback on, since it is not like anything so far in the game and I think it would be a lot of fun to play with.

R: Twin Tanks Cooldown: 140/120/100 seconds Videl attaches a second Essence tank to the bottom of her device, and shunts all of her Essence into that tank. This allows Videl to heal as if she had 100 Essence and deal damage as if she had 0 Essence (gaining the maximum multiplier on both) for 8 seconds. After the effect ends, Videl is returned to 50 Essence.

This ultimate makes sense to me mechanically for Videl, and ideally allows her to forgo needing as excellent positioning as she normally would during a teamfight. Due to the nature of her passive, though, it might currently last too long, especially taking into account Videls who built a lot of damage. As such, I look forward to seeing everyone's feedback!

Suggested Items: Frost Queen's Claim / Eye of the Watcher: As a support, Videl very much wants a gold generation item, and since she will be constantly attacking and poking at the enemy champions to keep her heals effective the Frostfang line just makes sense for her.
Ardent Censer: Videl wants everything this item gives, except for the mana regeneration, which is completely wasted on her. But other than that this seems like the perfect item for her, especially since she will be applying the buff to her ADC almost constantly. Hextech Gunblade: Gunblade gives AD, AP, omnivamp, and an active with a potent slow. Videl's abilities scale with AP and she auto attacks a lot, and so can use both damage stats well. Furthermore, she lacks any kind of self-sustain, so the omnivamp will keep her in the fight for longer. Finally, the active slow gives her a consistent soft CC to put onto an enemy as a set up for her E so that she doesn't need to rely on the help of her team if she doesn't want to. It also makes escape much easier for her, as she has no mobility to speak of.

That's all I've got! I hope you all enjoyed reading about Videl, Taboo Knowledge, and I look forward to any feedback you guys can give.

I love the concept. We are clearly lacking a medic champion from Zaun or Piltover, giving us some modern medicine in champion format.

Your kit is amazingly interesting, letting you swing between the playstyle of a healer and a damage dealer. And it just works perfectly with her lore (even though I get the feeling that it is heavily inspired by a certain person from the game overwatch).

Still gotta say, I really hope your ideas get the attention they deserve and something similar finds its way into the game. I would definitely make Videl my support main. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

I have a question, did you name her after Videl, Hercule's daughter from Dragon Ball?

Sounds pretty cool, especially the mechanic that cleanses allies by damaging them a bit and cc's enemies with a small heal. I think that's the first time I've seen a skill like that in a game
