Mordekaiser rework idea
I know, I know. Another to add onto the ever growing pile of rework ideas from Mordekaiser players. But hey, I've wanted to have a go at it for a while so bare with me here. If you were expecting metal puns sadly there won’t be any, I’m not much a fan to metal music so I wouldn’t know what to put in there in that regard.
Without further disruption lets get into it.
So who is Mordekaiser?
Mordekaiser is a revenant with his soul bound to a suit of heavy Iron armour, he charges into battle and destroying his enemies single-handedly using his trusty enchanted mace/morning-star, Nightfall, with no fear of death knowing that his liches will just resurrect him if he did. He's a master of metal and necrotic magics, even stronger than the mist that enshrouds that shadow isle. He was at one point a ruthless dictator before the time of Noxus and Demacia and is the reason Noxus even exists in the first place. He is a champion that goes into battle like a true juggernaut, throwing aside his enemies like they mean nothing to him and uses there dead corpses to raise an army to fight for him.
It wouldn't be a stretch to say Mordekaiser is one of, is not, the most powerful undead being on Runeterra.
But sadly his kit doesn't reflect this in the slightest.
Mordekaiser's current Kit
Mordekaiser's passive feels right, it makes him tanky. Something Mordekaiser should defiantly be, that Iron armour isn't for show after all. Yet he's the squishiest of all the juggernauts since he has to mostly build damage items that don't offer much protection besides some health meaning Mordekaiser has to rely on getting close and dealing damage to fill his shield to really stay alive. This makes him really feast or famine as a consequence.
His Q is a good Representation of what Nightfall can do, but it's so lackluster it just doesn't feel like you're hitting your enemy for up to 1K magic damage on that third bonk. It just doesn't look cool at all and doesn't feel like it justifies what Mordekaiser could actually do to an enemy when they get to close. But if you didn’t kill the enemy with this you were kind of screwed because a lot of them time this is your main damage ability in fights, your bread and butter while the W is made for trades and sustain in fights while providing damage.
His W is so unMordekaiser like it makes me want to rip out my hair at times. In what world would Mordekaiser have to rely on an ally to do damage, he's a juggernaut who don't need no team to be a raid boss and beat his enemies into submission and then use their souls to destroy their own objectives. And the heal? It doesn't make sense. Mordekaiser wouldn't be too concerned about his own health in fights or an allies, he'd be more concerned with hitting his enemy so hard they turn into paste and then he moves onto the next.
His E is meh. It's good poke early and later it's a good way to execute enemies after your combo hits due to it's high damage later. But still it feels lack luster, wow he shot out a wave of necrotic energy...so cool...Wow I'm really shaking in my boots. The way he opened his hand and shouted, woo I don't want to mess wi- no wait Tryndamere just Autoed him once and he shattered like glass.
His R is probably the only part of his kit that really reflects what Mordekaiser can do in Lore and that's turn his enemies into undead minions. But holy shit does it suck. It's either the most useless spell in his kit or the most useful depending on who you use it on. Throw that thing on a fed ADC and watch the team just vanish as you lay into them with 700 magic damage autos from the ghost or ult a support and watch in despair as they auto attack for 70 damage. It doesn't feel too bad and doesn't betray his feel as a necrotic lord to much but again it doesn't feel complete.
I don't know about you but when I think Mordekaiser I don't see him resurrecting one person, I see him resurrecting the whole enemy team, his own team, all the dragons and all the minions he kills and laughing his way to victory.
What should Mordekaiser be?
It's a tough question, with all the new champs coming out there's less and less Mordekaiser can fit into. Right now he's just an immobile nuker (Something champions like Annie do much better than him) that relies on his team and is so feast or famine he can either be Jesus handing out the bread and fish to thousands or he could be the homeless beggar sitting on the street corner. You fall behind as Mordekaiser you're basically stuck in a rut unless you get really lucky with your R because you don't have any other use than to do damage and if you can't do damage you're just another weight to hold your team down.
It doesn't feel right, he shouldn't be an immobile nuker that relies on his team. He should be more utility based, he's a warlord who's strong and should do damage but not giving the man CC is a sin. Mordekaiser dominates the battlefield in every way possible. so why not make that his niche?
I purpose you make him into an anti-mobility damage dealer than also has a focus on Besieging objectives.
You keep him immobile, slow and an absolute slugger than'll nuke you so hard you'll wake up a month later in the shadow realm. But you should also make him someone who dominates the battlefield, a warlord that isn't just powerful when it comes to strength but also when it comes to his control over the battle. Mordekaiser should have absolute control over not only what his army does but also the enemies as well.
Mordekaier's Kit
P – Reveants march: Mordekaiser becomes immune to CC (Not Suppression) But is locked at a cap of 325 movement. When Mordekaiser get's close to a target they are slowed for 10-40% (based on level). If an enemy uses a mobility spell in this area they get impaled by a pike from the ground that holds them in the air for 0.25 seconds before dropping them. This passive can’t stop blinks or teleports (Has a 10 second cooldown per champ)
His passive wouldn't be the shield. simply because it replies on Mordekaiser dealing damage to stay alive which makes him either the easiest enemy to kill or pretty much unkillable for a few seconds if he's fed and not getting Cc'd into a coma. Rather I would make it a passive that makes Mordekaiser feel like the feared warlord that once ruled over eastern Valoran before his fall. This new passive focuses on Mordekaiser controlling the battlefield by controlling the enemies movement and not allowing them to escape by cancelling the enemies mobility spells.
Q – Nightfall: Mordekaiser channels necrotic energy into his mace and empowers his next two attacks and finally his third that does the damage from the first two strikes combined and roots an enemy champion hit for 0.5 seconds, the last strike also knocks nearby enemies (within a few units) into the air for 0.25 seconds. This shatters nightfall into metal shards that surround Mordekaiser that damage his enemies for a few seconds before reverting back into the mace. For the time Mordekaiser's becomes a ranged champ. If Mordekaiser kills an enemy champion with this ability it resets it’s cool down.
It's similar to the old Q (the same basically) But adds some power into his third strike by mimicking what it would really feel like to be Bonked by Mordekaiser. As for the mace shattering I think Mordekaiser is someone who would go all and out even beyond the strength of his own weapons and would break it and manipulate the shards to continue hurting his enemies and then fixed it to keep on hitting his enemies more when he got bored of slicing them into ribbons. As for the refresh on kills this ability is where the majority of Mordekaiser damage will come from, the mace. It’s not for show after all, it’s big, heavy and ready to kill you to death.
W – Mordekaiser manipulates the terrain around him by summoning several metal pikes in random locations around him, these pikes act as terrain and are not able to be passed through, if an enemy is hit by one of these pikes or touch one they become impaled for 0.25 seconds and take a quick burst of magic damage.
Replaces his old W with something that makes it so he replies less on his team and makes it so Mordekaiser can manipulate how his enemy have to approach, flee and even fight him and punishes them for walking into or being unfortunate enough to be hit by one of the pikes as it exits the ground. Mordekaiser wants his enemies to surfer as much as possible as he slam dunks them to death and what better way to do that than making him hard as nails to fight?
E – The one to rule them all: Mordekaiser summons the seven rings Mordekaiser throws out a chain to the nearest 5 enemies (priorities champions) and holds onto them for 3 seconds, during this time he drains the the units life and stats (not movement speed) from his enemies and gains them as his own for 5 seconds, after 3 seconds expire Mordekaiser throws the enemies into him dealing damage to them and stunning them for 0.25 seconds.
Mordekaiser controls the flow of the battle by literally grabbing his enemies and forcing them to come to fight him. He wants his encounters with the enemy to be completely dominated by him and that means making them come to him, willingly or not.
R – Children of the grave: Mordekaiser can select a dead target (and I mean ALL, Nothings off the table. Save for Baron, that’d be OP) And resurrects them to fight for him, during this time the enemy he resurrects (if not a champion or objective) will follow him around and attack enemies that attack or Mordekaiser attacks. Mordekaiser is limited to 6 minions, 1 siege minion or 2 large monsters. If Mordekaiser selects a dead champion or dragon/elder dragon Mordekaiser channels for 0.5 seconds and resurrects them. During this time Mordekaiser has control over what these units do by using R to move them. While the ghost is alive they will slowly fade and eventually die at a rate of 1% max HP per second. If the ghost attacks a unit they will stop fading for 5 seconds and then will continue to fade if not still on combat.
It still works the same, resurrects a dead unit to fight for you, but I’ve expanded it’s usefulness to also include everything Mordekaiser can get his hands on, minions, monsters, champions, dragons. Everything. Mordekaiser would resurrect it all to fight for him, even his own dead allies are fair game to the emotionless warlord who wants nothing more to rule it all with his iron fist.
Prologue
Well that’s my idea of a rework for Mordekaiser, I’d like to see him as a fierce warlord that controls everything that his enemies do, Mordekaiser wants control and that’s what he gets. Right down to the enemies very soul.
Is it overpowered? Maybe. Is it under powered? Possibly.
There’s a reason I don’t work at riot games or any of these companies in fact. I don’t have that mindset they do, they could possibly look at this and scoff. This is mostly food for thought of what Mordekaiser could possibly be in the future.
This is Fun as well of course.
Anyway that’s my take on a Mordekaiser rework, give whatever thoughts you have in the comments. Don’t be afraid to be brutal with me. I want to see where I did bad and where I did good.
Well hopefully you’ve enjoyed my take on Mordekaiser.
Until next time.
