New role picking proposition
Hello,
I am not sure that it is really new but I had an idea about a new way to pick roles. That would be a sort of mix between the old way and the current way.
Before, players didn't choose role preferences when queuing. Then, each player role was set according to what I would call the "first pick" or the "first claim" rules:
- "first pick": first player to pick chooses first, then second, etc.
- "first claim": first player to message a given role gets it. The problem was that these were implicit rules, players had to choose which one to apply and to respect it. An advantage was that most players had one or two main roles but were ready to play any of the 5 roles if needed.
Now, each player can declare preferences when queuing and is sure to have its preferred role. The advantage is that players almost always respect the automatic role they were assigned to and there is not the role assignment process to do like before (and all the problems that come with it). The problem is that it locks players in playing always the same role(s) and people are less able than before to play any role if needed. And this may be needed as it is not possible to always respect the preferences of every one. In such cases, there might be auto filled players on role that they don't play. This results in unbalanced games and degraded game experience.
What I would propose is a sort of mix of the two methods, based on the "pick order" rule:
- Players would not choose any role preference when queuing.
- Then the first pick would choose its role among the 5 possible ones. This would lock his role in the same manner that roles are affected in the current system.
- Then the second pick would choose its role among the 4 remaining roles and it would be locked as in the previous case.
- Same with third, fourth and fifth pick.
- Once all 5 roles are assigned, the current process with bans and picks would take place.
In brief, this would force the application of the "pick order" rule and I think that it could solve the two problems and take the two advantages:
- Players would be locked a role by the system so that they would respect it like in the current system.
- Players would be forced to play the last available role and then would have to be prepared to play any role like in the old system.
What do you think of this ? Do you believe it could work ?
