Retius, the Mechanical Scourge
This was a champion design I'd created over a year ago and I never really shared it with anyone... kind of a waste, so I thought I'd at least put it up on here for any feedback!
Retius, the Mechanical Scourge (ree-shee-us) Role: Fighter/Assassin Inspiration: Retiarius Fighting Style of Roman Gladiators https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retiarius Appearance: Retius is a large, bipedal robot. He is mainly black with short red stripes on its back. Each stripe represents another life claimed by him in the Noxian Colosseum. His right arm ends in a large trident, which is used for his basic attacks and some abilities. His left arm ends in a cannon, which fires out a net. This is in reference to the Roman gladiatorial fighting style, “Retiarius”. His head is shaped like that of an ancient gladiatorial helmet. In the center of his chest lies a red power source implanted by Viktor, which acts like a second brain.
Lore: Retius was once a mechanical gladiator used in a noxian Colosseum. Incapable of rebelling, refusing orders, or showing mercy, Retius was the perfect champion; feared by every prisoner awaiting their “turn”. All of this changed, however, the day Viktor snuck into the Colosseum undetected and began perfecting Retius, giving him increased power, sentience, and most dangerous of all: Free Will. Thankful for his newfound freedom, Retius pledged his allegiance to the Machine Herald and swore to help him bring his Glorious Evolution to fruition.
Attack Range: 125 Mov. Speed: 335
Abilities: Passive - Pollice Verso: Retius’ basic attacks and damaging spells reduce the armor of those hit by a small amount for a few seconds. This effect can stack up to 5 times.
Q - Trident Strike (Linear Skill Shot): Retius stabs forward with his Trident, piercing up to three enemies directly in front of him. Damage scales off Retius’ AD; this attack procs on-hit effects. Range: 225 (Costs 40 Mana at all ranks) (Cooldown 9/8/7/6/5 seconds)
W - Power Core (Toggle): Retius charges his power core, empowering his basic attacks and increasing his attack speed. Range: Self (Costs 6 Mana per second) (1 Second Cooldown)
E - Net Shot (Skill Shot): Retius fires his net cannon in a straight line after a short cast time, dealing minor damage that scales with his AP. The net can hit one enemy. Any enemy hit is slowed by 25/30/35/40/45% for 3 seconds. If the net hits an enemy champion, Net Shot can be recast to briefly stun and drag them back towards Retius a short ways. Retius’ next basic attack or Trident Strike will critically strike any enemy slowed by the net for 125/135/145/155/165%. Range: 650. (110/100/90/80/70 Mana) (21/20/19/18/17 Second Cooldown)
R - Gladiator’s Challenge (Ground-Targeted): Retius hefts his Trident with immense strength, jumps, and slams it down in a small area. Any enemy hit directly is stunned for 1.5 seconds and all other enemies indirectly hit are knocked back a set distance, depending on their location and proximity to the epicenter. Damage scales with AD. Additionally, for a short time, every auto attack against an enemy champion reduces the cooldown of Trident Strike by 1 second. Range: 500/600/700 (Costs 100 Mana at all ranks) (125/105/85 Cooldown)
Starting: Corrupting Potion/Mana Crystal+Health Potions; Yellow Trinket First Big Item: Manamune; The Black Cleaver Essential Items: Mortal Reminder; Stattik Shiv; Berserker’s Greaves Other Big Items: Warmog’s Armor, Youmuu’s Ghostblade, Banshee’s Veil, Trinity Force; Guinsoo’s Rageblade; Blade of the Ruined King; Frozen Heart; Bloodthirster Example Final Build: Berserker’s Greaves (Distortion), The Black Cleaver, Manamune, Mortal Reminder, Statikk Shiv, Bloodthirster, Greater Stealth Totem
Summoner Spells: Flash: Arguably the best Summoner Spell in the game, getting you out of sticky situations and in for your ultimate. Teleport: Almost a must for many top laners, Teleport allows you to split push, save allies or turrets, gank, backdoor, and more! It’s incredibly versatile Smite: Retius is a powerful jungler, able to slow and lock down opponents with his Net Shot and Gladiator’s Challenge.
Synergizes well with: Leona: What more could an assassin want than a buddy with massive CC? Leona’s incredible ability to lock down any opponent couples well with your damage and cc of your own. They can’t say no if they’re stunned! Orianna: Orianna’s ult is devastating, especially if Retius’ ult follows soon after. This can lead to a quick teamfight, as you stun nearly their whole team and shred them with Trident Strike. Struggles against: Malphite: Armor upon Armor. While Retius’ passive helps, Malphite’s incredible tank stats and ability to lower Retius’ attack speed makes him an extremely dangerous lane opponent. Rammus: Similar to Malphite, Rammus’ mid-late game tank stats will make you pull out your hair. He’s fast, he has tons of cc, and he’s massively tanky. Unless you managed to take him down early, stay far away.
Skins: Atlantean Retius: Sharing this theme with Fizz, Retius’ main body and power core are turned blue. His trident is changed to golden and his net is changed to a fisherman’s net.
Taunt: “I’m thinking… Thumbs down.” Taunt at Xin Zhao: “The Great Viscero, now a puppet of Demacia? Makes my victory all the sweeter.” Joke: Retius taps his net gun as if it’s malfunctioning and points it at his face. The net fires and he scrambles to get it off his face. Dance: Disco dances
Summary: Retius is a high attack damage, late game carry melee champion that synergizes incredibly well with attack speed, on-hit effect items, and armor penetration. Retius suffers from a weak early game; he’s very mana hungry early on. While he has little mobility, he makes up for it with the slow from his Net Shot. Net shot is a great engage and disengage tool, helping him escape ganks and catch opponents out. Don’t forget to cast Net Shot a second time if you want to engage! It provides a powerful way to bring them in range of Trident Strike and will guaranteed crit. Trident Strike is Retius’ bread and butter, and what you should max first. It has a low cooldown and helps him poke and waveclear effectively. Be careful not to run yourself out of mana; it’s really easy to do with the low cooldown. Power Core gives Retius much greater kill potential at the cost of mana per second. DO NOT always leave this ability on, especially early game. It’s a quick way to completely run yourself out of mana. His ultimate is great at singling out single opponents or displacing an entire team for a team fight. It has a relatively short range, making flash incredibly valuable for initiating team fights. Retius is a powerful late game carry, best suited for top lane or the jungle.
